What to do in Los Angeles?
I'd like to be knowledgeable to start this thread off with some good, conversation provoking information, but I have never been to L.A. and know little about it. Outside of LAX, which I've passed few a few times, I am clueless. The other thread seems to have focused in on getting tickets and making hotel/flight reservations, so I thought I'd start another more focused on what to do once we get out there!
Perhaps those of you who have experience in Los Angeles could offer some advice as to what to see, do, and eat in and around L.A.? Some conversation starters after the jump...
If you've been to L.A., what was the favorite thing you did while there?
Where would you recommend eating?
If you are going this time, what are your plans?
Is there anything you have done that you would avoid or advise against?
I've heard mixed reviews of Pasadena itself... some say it is a hellhole to be avoided at all costs, and others have said to budget a good part of a day to check it out... who should I listen to?

For what it's worth...
LA is a fast pace, sprawling city. While you are there no one, I mean no one, will give a shit. I’m no Frommer travel guru but have way too much time in LA than should be allowed by law. Really.
So with that said, here are a few things you might consider.
Entertainment:
Universal Studio’s City Walk – they always host events for teams and offer a number of options for all ages. I took my son their in ’05 and we had a ball.
Disneyland…meh. I’d find a bar and hole up before attempting a visit to this park. Same with Hollywood unless grandma is asking for pictures.
LA Lakers will be in town during game week. You can check out a basketball game at the Staples Center. Be ready to pay through the nose for tickets though.
However, I recommend finding that special Tide gathering and spending time meeting fans and starting new relationships. A much more rewarding and long-lasting experience.
Eats:
Lots and lots of options from your standard corporate fare to upper crust linen dining. I would pass on the latter as this trip should be about hangin’ with your Nation. And they will not be at the silver and linen establishments.
But you should try the hamburgers. While In-And-Out is arguably the best fast food hamburger going (I do recommend trying one), if you have time, the Apple Pan experience is hamburger heaven. This long-standing restaurant is counter eating at it’s finest. I don’t think you will get out of there eating just one either.
If you have never tried one, please eat a Fish Taco. Of course there are two camps on this delicacy but you’ll find this a staple at most Mexican themed eateries. And speaking of Mexican, not a big fan of the offerings in LA. It is authentic Mexican and fairly bland, IMO. Save your Mexican explosion for your next trip to San Antonio, IMO.
As for the high-brow options, pick one. Beverly Hills offers several and usually not too difficult to get a table. I like The Grill off Wilshire Blvd. Kinda old old school with an alley entrance.
Shopping (not asked but answered):
Really? Stay with Bama themed tees and sweatshirts. If you must, drive down Rodeo Drive for a look and gawk but save your money. If your $ is burning a hole in your pocket, take a drive out east to Ontario Mills. And eat lunch at the new Bass Pro Shop near Victoria Gardens. This area is a shopping mecca.
Avoid freeways during rush hour at all costs, especially if it rains.
As for Pasadena, it’s too bad the game is played the 7th instead of closer to New Years day as the Tournament of Roses Parade is definitely a “don’t miss” event. If you can get there this is 5-star venue even if you have to put up with obnoxious Buckeye fans (read:, not including Buckeye player families who are some of the most gracious people I have ever met).
Pasadena:
The community of Pasadena is primarily residential. So the Beach Boys “little old lady…” lyrics apply as this is a bedroom community. If you are into architecture, a casual tour of neighborhoods will be very rewarding. The homes are unique and majestic. Like with all places, there are hit and miss areas. But Pasadena is the destination…not the hub.
You better get in line early for parking, too. The area around the stadium is tight. You will need to pack a lot of patence in the morning. Don’t get in too big a rush. It will be a long day.
Can’t wait to see you guys there. Will be a great party!

um, "spent" way too much time in LA. Seriously way too much time.

Thanks for all the advice!
Will be sure to check out the eateries you mentioned, and I agree with your point about trying to meet up with those from your own fanbase… there is a kind of bond instantly made when away from home.
Just went to LA for business at the end of Sept.
Downtown off of Figueroa is a place called “The Original Pantry”, didn’t get in there as the line to get in was out the door and down the block, but was told a great place to try as evident by the line. Also, there are some nice restaurants around the staples center/espn zone. Nice places and I saw Michael Irvin at the Zone, so you might see a celeb. if you are into that thing. A really nice place for dinner is the “Daily Grill” off flower and 6th. Not what you would think as far as a Grill goes, I had their Filet and it was one of the best. If you are looking for expensive: L.A. Prime is excellent but be prepared to pay about $100/person. It is in the Westin Bonaventure hotel. There is a lot of nice areas to walk around by the Staples Center/ESPN Zone. Also be sure to check out Santa Monica Pier, another cool place to walk around. Melrose Ave. another cool place to shop and walk around. Wasn’t there very long but got to see some cool things. Traffic is pretty bad and I suggest a Nav unit if you have never been there before.
Will be splitting time with my friends any my parents
We are definitely getting a GPS for my dad for Christmas to be able to get around easier. Daily Grill sounds great! We are staying in Santa Monica, so we’ll check out Santa Monica Pier as well.

The most fun....
Is putting on jeans and an Alabama t-shirt and walking on Rodeo. You will get looks like you have never seen, and for a moment know what it is like to be an Auburn fan and looked down on by all… :)
Just kidding, but you will get some looks. I made sure to go to the ocean so I could atleast say I’d been to the Pacific ocean. The Griffin observatory is a must if you are a movie buff. We did San Diego for a day and it was nice. We fit as much in 4 days as possible since I doubt I’ll ever go back to Cali. Just walking from the hotel in to some of the residential areas of Beverly Hills was fun.

BCS National Championship website.
You know, you could go to LA ink and get a BCS NC logo tattoo by Kat.
to eat...
APPLE PAN – excellent burgers!
When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for Mark Ingram.
lived in Pasadena the past 4 years
Been following the blog awhile, but just now registered. i lived in pasadena that last 4 years before moving this august. Pasadena is one of the best towns in LA imho. Its kindof where all the old money is. Lots of beautiful houses and such. Colorado blvd has been revitalized in the last 15 years to be a great strip of shops and restaurants.
In Pasadena, definitely go eat at the Yard House. 100 beers on tap – great food!
If you are into more cultured things as opposed to theme parks, I recommend going to see The Getty Museum (an architectural marvel) or the Reagan Library.
I acknowledge that in the first paragraph
but the fact that it is called a “ticket and travel” thread had the majority of people in there talking literally about “tickets” and “travel” (plane tickets, etc) and not what to do in LA, so I thought it might be nice to have a separate thread focusing more on what to do once over there. I see that the thread is now starting to turn away from that and more towards what to do though, so that’s good. There is good info here, so I’m sorry for the redundancy – I might throw a link to it into the comments section of the official thread once it’s booted from the front page’s sidebar so the info doesn’t go for naught.
It's all good...
…I just assumed everyone took the word “travel” to included what to do when you’re out there.
Oh well, you know what they say about assumptions…
They make something....

Jumbo's clown room
some thing about a clown themed strip club in the “little Armenian” section of Hollywood. it’s wiki states " Some of the interior and front of the Jumbo’s Clown Room building is shown on the video for Let me Go by 3 Doors Down. The front of Jumbo’s Clown Room building is also shown on Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, season 4, episode 8, entitled “Manners”.
It was funny it is more Burlesque then any thing else here’s a link
I don't see any clowns on the website
But then, I’m fine with that. I think a TRULY clown-themed strip club would give me nightmares for the rest of my life.

I've been luggaged their MANY A TIMES!
This place is epic and is a must. As is The Brown Derby.
Seriously, the chicks who are way more scantily-clad than you’ll ever know are beautiful (certain nights? not so much)- the music is jumpin’ and the drinks are HELLACIOUS! They have cigarette girls TOO! Parking is a beotch, just saying. And. . . . .it’s forever packed.
The Derby is an institution, and doesn’t have scantily-clad personnel. They got a piano player man/wife team that actually look like their dead/zombies. (hey, it’s ‘their schtick’ and. . . .THEY PLAY THE MOST TEPID COVERS EVERRRRRRRR! It’s hilarious and very entertaining) Their Martini’s and chick-drink-foofy-stuff are also massive.
Good bang (pun intended) for your buck at both places.
Massive call on Jumbo’s, chinesedentist! Definitely, you played a strong-hand on that one!

Been to LA twice
on business and didnt do much in the way of sight seeing. Most people that live there tell you to stay away from Hollywood. Take their advice…..if I hadnt wanted to see all the past stars footprints at that chinese theatre I wouldnt have went. There so many fruit cakes on Hollywood Blvd you wouldnt believe especially were Gromans Chinese Theatre and The Kodak Theatre are located. Hollywood blvd is is lined with tattoo parlors and pawn shops. Was very hungry while on Hollywood Blvd and stopped at a Mcdonalds and I was the only one in there that spoke english…..got my food and decided to eat it in my car. The traffic is another thing…..the freeway was an 8 lane parking lot. I stayed in Seal Beach which is about 18 miles from LA and it took me almost 4 hours to get there starting out at 6:00 P.M. Rodeo Dr was ok but the prices will will kill a poor guy from Alabama. One thing I wanted to see, only because since I was a kid Id seen the Hollywood sign so much, was the sign itself. I wondered off into the Hollywood Hills but it got dark before I reached it and they no longer light the sign up so that was wasted time. The PCH, Pacific Coast Highway, offers a drive along the Pacific Coast that has some great scenery not to mention all the famous beaches that I have heard of all my life. Always heard that Venice Beach was crazy and full of weird people and its the truth. Its a shock for an Alabama boy that hadnt been there before. LA and CA is someplace that will be down at the bottom of my list of great places that I have visited.
