Added Benefit of Ingram's Win

Not only did Mark Ingram's Heisman victory end the meme of Alabama having never won a Heisman, it removed the school from the top of the list of winningest schools to have never won the award.  Going down the list:

1. Michigan (3 winners)

2. Texas (2 winners)

3. Notre Dame (7 winners)

4. Nebraska (3 winners)

5. Ohio State (6 winners/7 trophies)

6. ALABAMA (1 winner)

7. Penn State (1 winner)

8. Oklahoma (5 winners)

9. Tennessee (0 winners)

10. Southern Cal (7 winners)

11. Georgia (2 winners)

12. LSU (1 winner)

Did you notice who was missing?  That's right, of the twelve winningest programs in college football history, only Tennessee has failed to win a Heisman.  Just another thing to remind the Orange of when we get to see them in Knoxville next year.

Nice! Its great to finaly have a Heisman winner.

Does anyone know if Coach Saban has ever coached a Heisman trophy winner before Mark? Is this his first?

Are you serious?

You’ve seen what he can do without this ammunition, now imagine what he can do with 2 undefeated regular seasons, 1 SEC title, and a shot at the National Championship for recruiting.

that it better than a STFU. Now, not only does everyone else have to STFU, Bama fans get to turn it on a rival. That’s a double joy.

Being just the 3rd Sophmore to win the Heisman

Ingram has to be one of the youngest to win as well. In fact, since I believe Bradford was a redshirt sophomore (could be wrong about that), it would seem only Tebow could have been younger when he won the award. Anybody heard anything on these lines?

With Tebow's and now Ingram's win as Sophomores

Can it be said that the class a candidate is in really doesn’t matter anymore? I’m going to say that it really doesn’t for a couple of reasons. First, as well as many kids are being coached up through high school these days, they can contribute immediately, gain experience their freshman year, and contend for the trophy their second year. And while I don’t think it’s going to happen every other year from now on, I think we’ll be seeing a bit more of this than in years past. Second, Tebow set a precedent when he won that younger players are fair game, and Ingram benefited from that this year, I believe. Going forward, it’s not going to be the weird thing to do to vote for a younger player.

The only think I see that may change a lot of that is the NFL rookie salary cap in 2011. If that ends up keeping players in college longer, then voters may save their votes for seniors since the sophs will still have two more years to win it. What think y’all?

I heard Mortensen speak about the rookie cap

he said it would be at least another 2 yrs before anything is in place, b/c the CBA is going to expire, then we get an uncapped year, then it takes another year to negotiate terms to a new CBA. he was basically saying that if you were a junior and wanted to stay another year, then go ahead, b/c you wouldn’t be affected by a rookie cap after your senior year. As for how this pertains to the Heisman, i do not believe a freshman will ever win it, the closest one this year was Dion Lewis, and no one would give him votes b/c he was a true freshman

by Thomas Walker Esq on Dec 14, 2009 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed on the freshman...

that’ll never happen, but I think Sophomores winning it should be more common in the future unless the salary cap restrictions affect it somehow.

"Let's go be champions, boys!" - Greg McElroy

by SugarBowl93 on Dec 14, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

Is the cap...

…going to be more restrictive for juniors leaving early than it is for graduating seniors? Unless it’s more restrictive to juniors I don’t see the cap impacting people leaving that much. I’m just pulling these numbers out of thin air for the ease of their uniformity, but say there’s a salary cap of $2,000,000 per year for rookies. Say there’s a guy whose eligibility is up in 2020, but is draft eligible in 2019. $2,000,000 is still two million regardless of whether you get it in 2019 or 2020. Guys that can get paid early are still going to get paid early even if it is less. The lower rookie pay isn’t going to prevent the likelihood of injury or anything like that.

by Nico2.0 on Dec 14, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

That's true,

but several guys every year stick around anyway, even with the salaries as high as they currently are. With them significantly less, I see several more guys deciding to finish up and play another year of college. It certainly won’t be everyone – not by a long shot – but I do think it will make some sort of difference. Maybe not with the Heisman, but perhaps with CFB players in general deciding to stay rather than go.

"Let's go be champions, boys!" - Greg McElroy

by SugarBowl93 on Dec 14, 2009 10:45 PM CST up reply actions

from what I've been able to find

there simply isn’t enough information out there to determine the nature of the cap. No one knows yet how strong a stand the players union will take once the CBA expires, or the owners’ position for that matter. The amount of time it takes to restructure this kind of deal is so much that I don’t think anyone really has a firm grasp yet on what the terms of a new CBA are going to be. Realistically, I think we’re gonna see a true uncapped year in which the “haves” like the Cowboys and the Redskins will try to do everything in their power to stack their teams through the draft and trades in order to create teams that are heads above some of the smaller market teams

its hard to find a D.O.B for Ingram

but I think its 11/4/88. With the Heisman award banquet being on 12/12/09 that puts him at 21 yrs 1 m 8 days. Tebow’s D.O.B 8/14/87 and his award being won on 12/8/07 should put him roughly at 20 yrs 3 m 25 days. So Tebow was much younger than Ingram. Did not think Ingram was as old as he is.

Also, this was done with only a few mins doing some research on Google. The math is probably wrong so I’m sorry in advance but I think its close.

It would be a bit disingenuous to barb Tennessee about not winning a Heisman.....

…..considering we just won one this year and have constantly preached team over individual achievements. Also everyone knows Payton Manning was robbed in 1997.

Heisman should only be given .....

to Seniors. If you have 2-3 years of playtime (equals experience) and you have a great sophomore season but flop your senior year in spite of the added experience, then it could be argued that it was just luck or surrounded by a great cast which is not what the award is supposed to be about. I guess I’m just too ‘old school’!

I'll reiterate...

…that the Heisman is not my favorite award, but if it’s for the most outstanding player, then it seems that your age/class should not be a factor. If they want to award the most outstanding senior, that’s cool wit me…but that’s not what they claim.

Agreed.

It was awful that some of the voters actually came out and said they weren’t voting for Chris Weinke due to his age when he won it in 2000. Those voters should’ve had their votes thrown out, and never be allowed to vote again.

I think the wrong 'Bama player won the Heisman...

And I’m not trying to take anything away from Mark Ingram- I think he’s an amazing athlete, a great kid, and I’m super happy he won…but the award is supposed to be for the best player in football, and in my opinion, the best player in football this year has been Rolando McClain.

Ingram has been a stud running back all year, and deserved the award as much as any of the other finalists…but McClain is the captain of our defense. He’s constantly moving people around and making adjustments before the play even starts, and once the play is going, he’s in on damn near every play- either in on the tackle, breaking up a pass, hurrying the QB, or sealing off part of the field and forcing the play to go right where we want it to go. McClain is the best defensive player in the nation- and yes, even better than the very impressive Suh (who people don’t like to mention, had a few bad games in the middle of the season).

Again- I don’t want to take anything away from Ingram- I’m so proud of that kid, I’m happy for him and his family…

I just would like to see more defensive players getting recognized in the Heisman (a fleeting dream, to be sure) and I feel like ’Ro is the most valuable player on any field in the game today.

but voting for McClain for Heisman?

Look, I may think the electoral college is fucking stupid and antiquated as a voting system, but it’s the one we’ve got, so you gotta play its game. Same goes for the Heisman. Voting for McClain for 1st was equivalent to throwing your vote away to Nader in 2000

"Yeah, it's Tennessee, that's the way it is sometimes." - Corey Zickefoose, Pulitzer Prize winner and robbery victim

by Thomas Walker Esq on Dec 15, 2009 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Unless...

…because of our ‘stupid and antiquated’ electoral college, you lived in a state like Alabama where Al Gore didn’t have a prayer of winning, and you couldn’t vote for W., so you may as well have voted for Nader, because you’d still be throwing away your vote if you gave it to Gore….

But back to football…yeah, Scarbinsky’s choice was different because he actually got to vote…but any of the rest of us don’t have that ‘problem’, so stating that Rolando McClain was more deserving than anyone else doesn’t really establish a conflict, you know? Your vote, my vote, don’t count at all since they’re not real votes. We don’t have to play the game because we’re not even in the game.

Then, the issue is simply…who’s the most outstanding player?

believe it or not...

I hadn’t read anything about Scarbinsky voting for ‘Ro. I had finals all week so I really didn’t get to read much of anything, sadly. I just feel like ‘Ro is the most valuable player on our team, and probably the best football player in America. Again, I hope nobody construes this as a knock on Ingram- I’m proud as hell of that kid and think he’s a very worthy and deserving winner.

i wholeheartedly agree with you

I just had to stand on my soapbox when NLS responded. Take McClain away, and our defense is royally fucked. Take Ingram away, it’ll be different but not necessarily worse.

The Heisman is history.....

Ingram won it, and a bunch of a$$holes are still bitching about something that is over. Let’s face it, a whole lot of people absolutely hate Alabama, and they even stooped so low as to rip on a fine young man like Mark Ingram personally. What I say is F**K all of them. If they want to hate the Tide, let’s give ‘em a reason by beating the dog$hite out of Texas and rub it in their faces. Then, let’s pull in the #1 recruiting class again and keep beating the crap out of everyone else. I’ve given up on trying to get respect for Bama. Now, I just want everyone to FEAR the mighty Crimson Tide, and enjoy watching Saban ruin the career of every coach in the SEC.
