NCAA College Football Playoff First Round: Alabama vs Troy
Mountain West Connection, the SB Nation Blog covering the MWC, has put together a playoff slate for the 2009 season and is running it by reader votes. Today No. 1 South/East seed Alabama takes on No. 16 Troy.

I'm going to take Bama in that one.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
Alabama v. Troy?
This is a self-evident argument against a large playoff. I’ll listen to arguments for a plus-one system, but a 16 game playoff is pie-in-the-sky nonsense.
I think it is a 64 team tourney
which is crazy. 8 is the max— and even that is too many.

it's not as crazy as...
the nine people who think troy can be alabama.

Nope only 16
I feel that all conference champs get in, and by being a top 3 seed that is essentially a bye for a great season to round two.

All SEC teams on one side of the bracket and the Little 10 and ACC split pretty much killed that bracket for me

That is how the bracket worked out
This is just for fun to pass the time and gain some fun discussions about if there were a playoff. I am sure if this were in place instead of the BCS 99% of college football fans would love to watch these games.

listen, i like this effort by MWC
because everybody is always bitching about the proposed playoffs so it’s nice to see someone doing a plausible dry one of one for argument’s sake. put aside your prejudice of the method and allow yourself to enjoy the process of the thing.

As a sports fan
it would be amazing to see a bracket like that one play out… I mean just look at the “South-west” region… Penn St, FL, LSU, and TCU in a battle royale? That would be crazy fun to watch…
of course, as a Bama fan, I much prefer having the SEC Championship semi-final game and then only needing one more win to take the cake… of course, I’d be singing a different tune if TN had hit the field goal or if Auburn had forced a turnover on “The Drive”.
The greatness of this season...
…is measured in large part because we didn’t allow UT the opportunity to hit the field goal or Auburn to force a turnover on “The Drive”. Right now, we are perfect, which is what this team will always be if it can will itself to one more win.
Would I be happy in an alternate universe where we had a loss during the season, but we managed to get through playoffs unscathed and win it that way? Of course. Would it be as special? I don’t see how.

and let me tell you...
writing these stories about the loses to texas has made me appreciate exactly how special those wins this year were. we look at them as somewhat pre-ordained today but it’s not the case by a long shot.
still, the point here is playing out the idea of a 16 team playoff to it’s logical conclusion not arguing the underlying merits or lack of.

I can't be the only person who see this as delusional, can I?
Troy, ECU, and CMU has absolutely no business representing the “best” college football teams in the country in a playoff. Those three slots could have better been used to accommodate teams that actually play some sort of competition (Miami, WVU, etc) and until every conference plays a championship game, it just isn’t fair to place teams in brackets.

it's certainly no more deusional
than some of the picks that put folks in the march bball tourney.

which has expanded to what now? 65 teams?
when it originally started as 8? a 16 team football playoff would last 10 years before more folks clamored for 32, then 64, etc….it’s a slippery slope and not everyone can be pleased. plus, look what’s it’s done to bball’s regular season
