Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Big Ten May Become Big 14, And The SEC

According to CNNSI's "Truth & Rumors" column, the Big Ten may make a push for 14, maybe even 16 teams if or when they expand. This plan sounds very progressive and possibly needed by this conference to stack up to the strength of the SEC, Big 12 and maybe the PAC 10. My question to the community is this: If the Big Ten pushes this far, will the SEC have to "counter-attack"? If so, which teams would we want to join?

Would Clemson, either FSU or Miami, Louisville, Missouri, Georgia Tech and others be good fits or even interested in a new super-conference?

If the SEC wee to expand the schedules would have to change. Eliminating OOC opponents.

IMO this would hurt smaller schools that depend on these types of games to fund the athletics programs. $400,000 is no joke for playing a football game.

Who would we take? Southern Miss? seems like, to expand the SEC and get high caliber teams (Please no more Vandy’s) it would shank other conferences in the back. If the SEC took Clemson and FSU then the ACC would lose two teams and a conference championship would no longer be played. According to the NCAA for a conference championship game you have to have 12 teams. I say leave the SEC alone we don’t need to counter the Big 10 here they are merely trying to play catchup.

I could see the Pac 10...

possibly picking up a Utah and another WAC or MWC team to get to twelve, but who would the Big Ten pick up? Notre Dame or possibly Cincy?

Ok how about this domino scenario?

Missouri goes to the Big Ten, Arkansas goes to the Big 12, South Carolina goes to the ACC, and the SEC picks up two of the following (Clemson, Georgia Tech or Florida State).

OR

We could keep Arkansas, switch USCe with Clemson or Georgia Tech and TCU goes to the Big 12???

by RammerJammer23 on Dec 17, 2009 3:03 PM CST reply actions

I don't see the Big XII taking Arkansas, rather TCU

I doubt that the Big Ten goes to 14 or 16. That would eliminate ND for sure. Why would they lose their tradition, which is built on annually playing 3 B10, 3 P10 and 3 BEast teams every year. The more conference members included would necessitate fewer non-conference games and the ND traditions would be minimalized. They would have a toughter time recruiting nationally.
If the BigTen went to a 14 or 16 team conference, no ther conferences would do that, until it was demonstrated that it was a wise decision. That would take several years to figure out.
What we know today from more than a decade of practice is that 12 team conferences do better than 10 team conferences with money and championships.

Or the DOOMSDAY scenario...

Mizzou goes to the Big Ten, Big 12 takes Ark, SEC take Georgia Tech, ACC takes Cincinnati, Big East picks up Penn State, Big Ten decides to take Texas, Big 12 gets Ole Miss, SEC picks up Mizzou, so the Big Ten takes Kentucky, so then SEC decides to take Clemson, the ACC is all pissed and decides to take Alabama, AND THEN WE’RE IN THE ACC! IT COULD TOTALLY HAPPEN!!!!!!!

just takes FSU and Miami. Talk about a super conference!

Absolutly no way

Miami joins the SEC. I don’t care about anyone else but no Miami. I mean c’mon! Its a Yankee college that happens to be south of the north. It would be a disgrace

Ga Tech

would never get in the SEC- they got out of the SEC because they could not stand the heat.

I could however see an SEC expansion. FSU- West and Clemson- East would be the logical choices. You would still play 8 conference games, just 2 from the other division.

However, 12 teams is actually a perfect number so we’d be smart to stick where we are. If UK or Vandy ever wanted to leave—let them. FSU and Clemson would be prefect fits.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Expansion forces some schools to redefine their rivalries

That’s what happened in the SEC, Big XII and ACC. Why should it be any different for other conferences.

Expanding beyond 12 teams will limit the frequency traditional rivalries, by limiting the contact of non-divisional conference opponents. Since nearly every BigTen conference game has some trophy attached to it they would be giving a lot of that up by limiting conference play as to not lose scheduling competitiveness with other conferences.

The Pac-10 has demonstrated that it is near impossible to be a BCS CG contender if you play nine conference games when almost everyone else is playing eight. That is one of the reasons I see the Pac-10 expanding as well as the BigTen. Their experiment is failing.

Expanding beyond 12 teams would force the conference to either agree to play fewer non-conference games, which would increase the probability of a lose, or play fewer non-divisional conference games, which would limit skirmishes between traditional rivals.

by crimson37 on Dec 18, 2009 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Good pick up.

At first people considered the SECCG a killer for a shot at the NC. It turned out to be the exact opposite. The result is that teams who do not play in a conference championship game are now less likely to get in than those who do play in those games.

If the Pac 10 would expand and divide they could play more non conference games which would mean more home games and more money. Eventually that is what will happen.

And hey maybe we could get a home and away with USC again.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

i can believe they'd do it.

the big ten is run by a bunch if idiotic fuckwads. of course they could take a good idea (expand to 12 teams, split into 2 six team divisions, allow for one cross divisional rivalry remain in place and have 2 rotational non division conference games plus the 1 perminent one, and 5 division games) and turn it into a really awful one (14 or 16 teams like the old WAC was, cause that worked out sooooo well for the WAC, i mean MTN west)
