Telepath, huh?

They put on a really fun show, but I’ve never been able to get past the fact they lack a guitarist, just seems odd to me to have a drummer, bassist, and keyboardist but no one to shred the axe

I saw them...

…at The Nick of all places earlier this year (don’t get me wrong, I love The Nick, but it was the wrong venue for them) on something like a Tuesday night. Not a lot of people there, but it was one of the best shows I saw all year.

I love guitar, but to me, they work will without one.

I’ve seen Chanticleer live 3-4 times. They’re great. Haven’t seen Dawn Upshaw yet though I’d love to see her perform this, which is probably in my Top 50 recordings of all time:

Not sure, but that might be something for me to research later since I’m a nerd for that kind of stuff. I always wonder how many people bought other works of his without being familiar with his oeuvre and were shocked by how different some of it is.

I hear there is a university

in Oxford, but for my money it is simply a town that produced a band called the Outfield whose collective swinging-pair allowed them to rock an electric blue bass without fretts or a head. Thats REO-level real, son !!

i thought it was funny when I saw Stephen,

he had this incredibly tall, shirtless rasta that jumped around stage swinging a Jamaican flag above his head the entire show. That dude was in shape b/c that shit had to be tiring. To me, Stephen has the voice that’s most similar to his father’s, but he really excels in being a producer and combining solid songwriting with diverse beats. That mind control album hit multiple genres throughout, and if I’m not mistaken, he produced Damien’s Welcome to Jamrock album as well

by Thomas Walker Esq on Dec 18, 2009 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

Flag guy...

…was amazing. I was telling someone about that at our tailgate at the Mississippi State game.

Stephen does sound the most like his father for sure, but I kind of like Damian’s harder sound. “Welcome to Jamrock” was the album that kind of got me back into Jamaican music. I’d fallen away from following the scene down there for a while, but while living in Florida, I lived in a neighborhood with a lot of Jamaicans so you’d hear these albums in shops, on the radio, etc. and I fell back in love with the island sounds.

by Nico2.0 on Dec 18, 2009 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

would you happen to also be a fan of Michael Franti?

He recorded his most recent album in Kingston, had a much mroe island sound than his previous albums

That's a man that knows some music!

You, Mr. TW, Esq!

Michal Franti and Spearhead are my homegrowns! He’s a kind soul and a genius to boot. Check ‘em out Nico, you’re gonna love you that San Francisco sound. Fo’ shizzle, my nizzle! I met him when I was at UC San Francisco- he and another good buddy of mine Terrell (badass dancer/percussionist) went to USF (they like to say, in our group- they’re the Dons- Godfather reference) and Michael cracked his head open at a Fugazi concert we attended at some racetrack in the East Bay. Was in the hospital for a good 15 minutes- he didn’t want them to open up his noggin’ out of fear they’d take his “music”. I am not kidding! (he’s a ‘homeopathic’ guy, himself. . . .anyway). It was comical watching the ambulance drivers chase us back across the Bay Bridge to get to our pads.

We made it no problem. Terrell had a 1970 Grand Prix at the time, I had my Silverado truck. We halled balls and went through the toll so fast, the cameras couldn’t catch our plate numbers. (stupid liberals up there with the ‘Carpool Lane’ cameras switched off on a Saturday night- no less?)

Check ‘em out Neek. You’ll be down!

bix, you're outta your mind (in a good right-side-brain sorta way)

but yeah, love me some Franti, he puts on one of the best shows of anyone I’ve ever seen, so much energy. Met him at a festival in Kansas, dude asked me if I knew a good yoga instructor. Never wears shoes either, and quite surprising that he’s close to 6’10

Do you live in Kansas?

And yoga too? (damn frickin’ toughest workout EVER!) Hate that shit. What’s that weird position, on your back, arms above your head, legs off the ground- in like a spread out- gonna have a baby kinda way, heels of your feet pointed towards the sky/toes pointed towards the ground as best you can. . . .here’s the worst part- the splaying of your toes/spread apart as far you can?

What’s that one?

I’ll never take a yoga class again. Took it at USC and the 3rd class- the instructor got all us beginners/intermediates into that one. . . .I about wanted to knock her upside the head for THAT ONE! I was sweating bullets at the ‘spread eagle part’ because before getting into that one- there were these weird little ones where the movements were so slow with your arms and legs barely off the ground and all the breathing/exhaling were so . . . .how shall I put this? . . . untimely. She prolly wasn’t a very good instructor and at the time- I wasn’t the most ‘bendable’ m-fer on the planet. So, anyways- she’s hovering over ME for like 3 – 5 minutes- and we’re now 15 minutes into this position- still @ 2 minutes away from the whole ‘splayin of the toes’ part. Mr. Walker- I was shaking, no. . . .shivering, seriously at that part. Again, SWEATING LIKE A M-FER!!! and I really, really, really just wanted to cry. (post skateboarding injury rehab-bing at the time)

I hated her. And, since then- I’ve hated yoga!

What is that one called? “Dying-Dog-In-the-throes-of-his-Last-Breath” or something? Hated it!

Are you any good at it? (Good on you man. All the power to you! Do you know that the Devil enters your body when you open you shakras? Me neither, some preacher told me that once. So, for reals. I’ll never do yoga again in my life!!!! Word)

you misunderstand me. my aura is green, not purple

Sophomore year at Bama, my roommate dragged me to yoga bliss downtown across from the Mellow Mushroom under the stipulation that “hot hippie chicks with good buds do yoga.” We showed up baked, and after insulting the “yogi” vegan slut by asking her if I could replace her “Ultra Chilled vol. 3” cd with “The Cosmic Game” and engaging in stance that highlighted my abuse of tobacco and alcohol, I realized I realized none of the bra-burning afro-pit new agers would ever cross horizons to meet my lifestyle of dead animal consumption, unhealthy indulgence, and overall moral recklessness. So to put it simply, no, I am not a practitioner of yoga.

That's funny ass-shit!

Did you tell Michael to NOT visit that beotch? And, I dig your aura the way it is:

1- because you seem to be just like me- a part-time vegetarian (we eat produce from time to time, whenever it compliments the steaks we eat. so- part-time, it is!
2- smoking herbage is very much a fraternal pastime, from our fathers and forefathers and their fathers too. it’s older than fermented beverages and there’s someone who always has something better than what you got, especially when you could really use something better. i love the karma of it!
3- green just happens to be my favorite color. i ain’t lying. it is!

However, purple hair shit is damn fine green- if you know what I mean? Purple, green? You seem like a fine gentleman with a great zest for life, love, and happiness. That’s alright TW, Esq! I don’t much care for mean people, and you don’t seem that way.

Dope set you played today, I like Beautiful Girls too. (we have so much in common. The band and the preference! Holla!)

been tryin to catch The' Girls for a wilie now, but they rarely venture SE, but in response to your observations

1. I sprinkled parsley on the ingredients I swiped for the filet oscar from my parents’ deep freezer (i’m holiday house-sitting b/c the family dog is Methuselah). parsley is a veggie, right? if not, I know I cooked my venison in olive oil, and that’s veggie-based, so I think I think I can skate under the wheatgrass-drinkers’ radar .
2. i like salad
3. the choice of green can be attributed to multiple subconscious facets, according to each individual shrink (they’re all quacks). I just think the green m&m is hot.

Fruits, vegetables, herbs. . . .? Same difference. You see, vegetabarbarians don’t eat JUST veggies, they also woof down fruit, yes? Otherwise, we’d have fruitcakes! (oh yeah????) At any rate. . . . .you’re cool!
