Nico2.0's Favorite Music of 2009: RAIN MACHINE
Anybody that's spent more than a day two on Roll Bama Roll knows that we talk about music and movies a lot around here. 2009 is winding down, so despite our football frenzy, there's always time for some tunes (plus, BixBiederBecke requested something along these lines recently.) I'm not going to do a countdown or a Top 10 or anything formal like that, I'm just going to bestow upon you some songs and/or albums I loved this year.
RAIN MACHINE
Rain Machine
First up is RAIN MACHINE, a side project of TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone. I love TVOTR, love 'em...so I was excited to see what Kyp had up his sleeve for a side project. This song ("Give Blood") kind of sounds like it could be on a TVOTR record, but the rest of the album is definitely a departure from his main band. Gotta love the cowbell intro, angular guitar lines, lead vocals, female backing vocals, percussion, etc.
Here's a fun bit of trivia for you. I'm 99% sure that guitar in the video was purchased in Birmingham. Their show here this fall was the first leg of the tour and he said his regular guitar was broken by the airline and that they had to rush around town all day looking for a new guitar and that he finally found one he liked...that is assuming of course they don't tell that story in every town they visit...

i couldn't take this weather in Bham
so I took the rest of the day off. I can do cold, I can do wet, but I hate both

I admire you for your openness to different and obscure music/bands
I have always struggled, rarely proactively finding a band I like that wasn’t already popular. I know I am not into music as much as you, but I really need to diversify my iTunes.
Too bad I can’t pronounce half the bands you like, though. (just kidding man).
You play fast, you play strong, you go out there and dominate the guy you play against, and make his ass quit! That's our trademark, that's our MO as a team, aight, that's what people know us as! - Nick Saban, 2008
Not everything....
…I put up over the next few weeks will be this peculiar. Some of it is even downright radio friendly. I was just listening to this late last night and figured I’d put it up first since it was on my mind.
So, have faith y’all, there’s something for everyone (most everyone anyway.)
It was a compliment to you, man.

Starting your jam with
hard-panned syncopated calypso bells, over-processed vocals and treble hell is just enough fail to ruin whatever merit was left in that tune.

I figured...
…I’d throw the difficult stuff out first so y’all would have nowhere to go but up. Here’s hoping y’all keep reading/listening.
I know I'm an old guy
but this made my head hurt.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
It's certainly not for everyone...
…and age has nothing to do with it. My girlfriend is in her 20s and she said it’s way too experimental and weird for her.
Dump her....

Good grief...
…now this video’s been removed. Everything fun on the interwebs is disappearing today. I’ll have to see if I can find another version.
I'M WAY DOWN!
This band played at the Getty? What the? I know they have free shows, it’s actually a beautiful and incredible place to throw a gig- you’re way up on top of this mountain and you’ve got about 220 degrees of a panorama of Los Angeles- looking NW to just a tad towards the east on a SE perspective. Nothing east whatsoever and not exactly totally north. The sunset of a ginormous art-piece is the wallpaper/screensaver? of my cell phone.
But this music is quite layered and beautiful if taken for the sum of it’s parts. I wish I had time to view the lyrics, but as such- I’ma go youtubin’ for more of this group.
Bitchen badass, Neek! 3 thumbs up, if only I had one extra thumb!
