Illinois has called a 2 p.m. press conference to announce Vic Koenning as its new defensive coordinator.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Vic Koenning case
Georgia went hard after Vic Koenning for the defensive coordinator position, but apparently they have missed again. This comes after apparently doing the same thing with both Kirby Smart and Bud Foster. It will be interesting to see where UGA goes from here.

Dick Bumpas from TCU is
still very high on the wish list…

"Georgia went hard after Vic Koenning"?
Can you cite me a source for that assertion? It doesn’t seem to jibe with what the Georgia beat reporter is saying.

Joe Schad particularly is trying hard to backtrack on [his] obviously dropping the ball.

Interesting
I think GA has got to have a great season next year for Richt to stay, and maybe the uncertainty is enough to keep some of these higher profile DCs away.
You play fast, you play strong, you go out there and dominate the guy you play against, and make his ass quit! That's our trademark, that's our MO as a team, aight, that's what people know us as! - Nick Saban, 2008
So..
…then Vic Koenning went to the more stable situation at Illinois? I guarantee Ron Zook is less likely to be at Illinois at the end of the season than Richt.
Is this what you meant?
that Richt would really be more likely to be fired over Zook? If that happens, it would be the most idiotic thing since OM canned Cutcliffe.

Why Vic went to Ill.
is hard to figure, but next year is very important for Richt’s future. Plus Richt stupidly played a bad senior this year at qb when he could have gone with a freshman and had the same results. Thus UGA enters 2010 with no experience at qb.
Things do not look good for going more than 7-5. They play out of conference at Colorado, they only have 3 home SEC games (this is their year to be “home team” vs. UF) and their open date is before Tech so they play 11 weeks straight—not smart.
7-5 likely gets Richt canned, especially if they get beat bad by UF. Unless of course UGA decides they are ok with being #3 in the East.
So which really hot DC wants to take this on?
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
