Georgia coach Mark Richt fired defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and two other defensive assistants today, the school just announced.

Linebackers coach John Jancek and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris also did not have their contracts renewed.

Paul Gattis: Georgia's Richt fires defensive coordinator, 2 other assistants

It's Christmas come early for Dawg fans. I imagine there will be a lot of chatter about Kirby Smart going to Georgia, but Gentry Estes has said repeatedly that won't happen. Of course, FSU could be another story, I suppose.

whats your thoughts on Smart leaving after the season?

I think...

I think that he probably stays at the end of the year. I know the FSU job is probably appealing to him — and he might leave for it, in all fairness — but my thought is that if he wouldn’t leave to go back to Athens, he probably wouldn’t leave to go back to Tallahassee either.

My thinking is that he will eventually get a head coaching job somewhere, and he is probably holding out for that. He’s too good to just be a defensive coordinator somewhere, and I really don’t know if he’s overwhelmingly interested in getting another DC job just to escape Saban’s shadow like Steele did. I imagine he holds out for a head coaching job and gets it in the next year or two.

Either way, it’s clear that he is on borrowed time in Tuscaloosa.

ok...

lets say he does leave…Is there a guy on our staff who would just fill the role or would we bring someone in?

Well...

… on some level we would have to bring someone in somewhere. In terms of filling the DC opening in-house we could go with either Sal Sunseri (who is rumored for some jobs in his own right) or James Willis.

If we were going to go with an in-house hire, I would keep my eye on Willis. A lot of people probably don’t appreciate the magnitude of what he had to give to come here, and he did so not out of a love for Alabama but because he knew it would be an opportunity to improve, become a much better coach, and that would open a lot of doors for him later on down the road. Based on all of that, I could see him having a decent chance.

Of course, though, that’s assuming we stay in-house, which isn’t a given by any stretch. We could just as easily fill the position from outside the program, and if we go that route then trying to predict who it will be is about like trying to predict the winning lottery numbers.

We’ll just have to see how it plays out. Hopefully it won’t be an issue for another year or two, though.

yeah thats what i was thinking...

Sunseri would be a good choice..Im just thinking that it takes a certain mindset to run this D. The fact that Smart has been with Saban so long, makes trying to replace him that much harder…

Sunseri is a good backers coach,

but is not cut out to run the D. You’re right bammer, it takes a certain mindset and IMO I am not sure Sal has it.

Sal has it....

He’s a good coach, who has proven himself on in all levels of coaching: NFL & College. Howevere, I don’t think Sal would leave Bama for anything other than another NFL job. I went to middle school with his son, and have heard he is growing tired of the recruiting that goes with being a college coach…especially on Saban’s staff.

His Son

I hear one of his sons is supposed to be a pretty good prospect next year coming out of North Carolina. Not sure any other information on him though.

I hate to say this

but I hope Smart does come to FSU. Lord knows we need him. Plus, everybody knows that it’s Saban’s defense anyway (for the most part). I think the only reason Smart would leave is so that he can get out from under Saban and have his “own” defense.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

if i were Smart...

if be very caustious of FSU. Its not a given that Fisher is going to turn things around. IF he indeed is looking for a HC position, then staying at bama is his best bet. No rebuilding, great mentor and will continue to build one hell of a resume.

Leaving for FSU could spell doom for his chances to one day get good HC position.

I think it is a given

Look what Fisher has done with the offense. Coordinator of the year last year. Great recruiter and we have a so so division in our conference in a state with the best high school football players. FSU will be back and a decent DC hire gets us back quicker.

By the way

I think he goes to FSU or nowhere. My money is on nowhere though, Saban is less likely to let him go to a SEC school. With FSU he gives Smart a chance to beat up on the Gators and a lead on kids every year in the state of Florida who FSU doesn’t need.

Sure FSU has a chance...

But you have to look at it through Smarts glasses. If he leaves Bama to help rebuild FSU and Jimbo fails, he also fails. JImbo’s coaching ability has already been called into question this year due to Bowdens incompetency. I think thats ridiculous but its true. And before you call me some crazy bammer, i live in Tally, so i have a unique perspective on this issue.

IMO, his best bet at landing a high profile HC position one day, would be to stay at bama.

Smart

needs to stay at Bama. He is about 3 years away from getting a head coaching shot if he will just bide his time. Under Saban he is almost assured of having a great D which will land him a good HC job.

But go to either UGA or FSU is a mistake as those places are not stable right now. No one knows how Jimbo is going to do and Richt is one more 7-5 season away from the boot.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

FSU or Georgia

Eh, I’m no expert, and I have no idea what AD’s or NFL GM’s would think, but how true is it that instead of being Smart’s Defense, its actually Saban’s at Alabama? And at Georgia with Richt being a former offensive coordinator, and at FSU with Fisher being a former offensive coordinator, at both of those places the defense would be “his”. So, by performing well there with him truly running the show defensively, he’d be in line for better jobs more quickly. Right?

Dan Mullen...

…is probably the closest corollary to Kirby Smart that I can think of. He stayed and learned under one of the most innovative offensive minds the SEC has ever seen, and was given an opportunity to take a BCS head coaching job. Most people thought it was Urban Meyer’s offense, but people who knew football knew what Mullen did and how influential he was. There are also people like Will Muschamp, who despite coaching under defensive head coaches (Tuberville and Saban) could have had gone to any number of good head coaching jobs. He of course chose to stay as defensive coordinator and head coach in-waiting at Texas.

As far as public perception you may be right that going somewhere, if he can be as successful, might give him a slightly higher profile. Of course, with that said Smart is already one of the hottest named coordinators out there and a finalist for coordinator of the year this year. I think he has done a really good job of proving just how good he is. Also, most of the time when an AD is looking to hiring a coach they are relying on advice from other coaches, and Smart is definitely well thought of in coaching circles.

The other problem with potentially going to another school is that often it takes a few years to turn around the problems. The coach usually needs to get more of his players in the program. The old players often ran a different scheme, so they have to be developed.

Another good example that someone mentioned earlier was Jimbo Fisher. Jimbo Fisher is a great coach, and it has taken him nearly three years to get the offense to where it is at an elite level, when healthy at FSU. It took Nick Saban and his defensive staff two years to get it running at a high level at Alabama.

Even if your generous and assume that Kirby Smart is able to get a defense turned around in two years, would he not be better staying at Alabama and maintaining the high level of play that he has established? Either way, Smart is on the fast track, and will probably not be at Alabama too long, one way or another.

On the Dan Mullen angle

Think Urban and Mullen have talked this week on what Mullen saw when they played us? It’d kind of be nice to have a Saban disciple in the East division to kind of even the score.

…you don’t think Coach called Lance Thompson for a chat?

good point...

another angle would be that Smart has only been a DC for one year. Last year he was Co- DC. He might need to stick around a few more years…
