Non-Football Post- What's Your Favorite Christmas/ Holiday ?
I’m sure most, if not all of you have going into near full out depression mode by now... (Damn you 30+ day layoff!) Sure there are a few pointless bowl games out there, but these games mean nothing to us. In fact, I doubt I’ll watch many bowl games this year. I guess Bama being in the only game that really matters, means the luster of the bowl season is lost on me..
That said, the great thing about RBR is that we are not only a sports community, we are also like a family. So I figured this would be a great opportunity get to know each other a little more. The idea is to tell your fondest Christmas or Holiday memory. It can be about a sporting event or just a family memory...doesn't really matter...
Here is mine....
The Christmas season has always been the holiday I enjoy the most. Not sure if it’s the cold weather, the food or just being around family but I really love Christmas. I think my (some what) obsession was driven into me by my mother. This woman freakin loves Christmas...I mean as soon as Thanksgiving dinner is over, the Christmas decorations come out.
This is where my fondest memory comes from. When I was 10, my parents had the grand idea of buying a 130+ year old house in down town Mobile right off Azalea St. . You know, one of those houses with the plaque on the front signifying it's old as shit..My mom (being a HUGE "Gone with the Wind" fan) always wanted to live in one of these homes...Anyways, I loved this house. It was 3 stories, with 2 hidden stair cases. (not really but they were to a 10 yr old). And for the 1st time in my life I had my own room..and why not...there were 8 of them...
We never had a lot of money growing up, so Christmas was never about the gifts. One of our family traditions was to go cut a fresh Christmas tree from one of the local tree farms. Since the ceilings at our house were nearly 20 ft, my mom decided that this year, she wanted to get the tallest, largest tree they had...We had to go to 3 different tree farms to find one big enough but we finally found one that measured in just shy 14 ft.
Getting it home was an event in itself but trying to get the stupid thing in the front door, then attaching a tree stand to the rather large stump and getting it to stand straight took about 4 hours. (What took the longest was finding a stand to support the weight of the tree.) We had to use a ladder to decorate it and the poor tiny angel that sat on top looked quite ridiculous..We only had enough lights/ ornaments from Christmas's past to fill about half of it. So, the amount of lights we had to go buy to fully light it was just silly....
Compared to most Christmas's, I probably got about half the gifts I normally would have gotten...And honestly, I can't remember a single gift I got that year. But I will never forget seeing my mom's face as she looked at that gigantic tree in that amazing, beautiful house...
Merry Christmas to everyone at RBR!

This might make me shallow...
…but my fondest Christmas memory was getting the G.I. Joe Hovercraft “from Santa” one year:

I woke up and wandered into the living room and saw that baby sitting out in front of the Christmas tree and everything else in the room quickly faded away. I vaguely recall getting a bunch of other G.I. Joe stuff that year from “Santa” and from family (I was 5 or 6 at the time?), but that Hovercraft…best damn gift I ever got. Loved that thing….

I do remember the gift
Chrono Trigger for SNES, which is still my favorite console game ever (yes, I’m a total nerd).
But the biggest thing was that my mom and dad had just gotten divorced. I really wasn’t old enough to know what she was going through, having to deal with that while taking care of us and trying to plan Christmas for us. Well, we went back to Nashville (where I was born and most of my family lives) to celebrate along with my godmother. My mom realized she had forgotten the present and drove all the way back to Birmingham during the night to get it and bring it back. I mean, I would have ended up getting the present anyway, but she just wanted us to have a great Christmas, and I’ll always appreciate that.
I missed your era of video games
I was partying from 1988 to 1992. I was married from 1992-2002. I was beset just wanting to watch BAMA games, I didn’t want to fight over video games. After I got divorced in ’02, I found myself with a bunch of free time. I picked up a PS1 and the first game I played, hooked me like I was a kid again. It was FFVII but my next game was the re-release of Chrono Trigger for the PS1. It was a pretty damn good game.
Now for my favorite Christmas, every one I got to spend with my Mom. I say this as a person who was bit Ebenezer Scrooge. I wasn’t stingy but I did not really love Christmas, that was until I had one without my Mom. She loved Christmas and she actually got me to smile at Christmas every year. I now cherish every Christmas in her honor. It is my duty now to push cheer into my Dad and the whole rest of the fam damily. Ho, Ho, Ho.

Chrono Trigger
for SNES was a great one. Final Fantasy II for SNES was probably, for me, a little bit above it though. Great story and music for its time.

This is easy for me.
The best gift I ever got was the 80’s old school original Laser Tag.

Parents pulled the old “you probably won’t get it because its too expensive” trick leading up to Christmas morning. I woke up to find no Laser Tag left by Santa. After opening all my presents my mom asked if I got everything I wanted. Not one to break mom’s heart I said yes. She then pointed to one more package under the tree that had no name on it. I opened it and there it was…

This was my all-time favorite-
I can hear still the sound of that launcher screamin while I was cranking the crap out of it!

This was by far the worst:

my parents got me this one year...
it really weirded me out..
