Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis on Monday tabbed redshirt freshman running back Tre' Newton as the starter for the Jan. 7 national title game against No. 1 Alabama, which boasts the nation's second-ranked rushing defense.

Newton is a former star at Southlake Carroll High School in the north Dallas-Fort Worth area and the son of former Cowboys lineman Nate Newton.

ESPN.com: Texas to hand off to Newton from start

I honestly wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Texas decided just to scrap the running game altogether, just like Utah did last year in the Sugar Bowl, but at the very least the coaches in Austin are talking a big game about the importance of being able to run the football against us. Note that Newton played with Greg McElroy at Southlake Carroll.

Newton

is their leading ground gainer on the season a little over 500 yards and has 5 yards per carry average which is their best average as well so I don’t see this as some big news.

Texas will run it some, but they will throw first. The run is just to keep you honest.

It was more than frustrating

It was the worst I’ve seen our offensive line play in years. Suh was the next best thing to your Incredible Hulk.

We’re actually more balanced than people think, 485 rushing attempts vs. 496 passing attempts this year and we averaged over 4 yards per carry, including sacks. Had some problems against top defenses, though. We know we can’t throw it 40+ times and win most games.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 21, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Who's doing all this rushing if the top back has 500 yards

Is it end arounds, qb draws, sweeps or? Seriously wondering!

'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!

by rmathis on Dec 21, 2009 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

pardon my intrusion by the way

We started with a running back by committee approach because the main guy, Cody Johnson, big back, was out of shape when the season started. Then we went to a guy named Fozzy Whittaker, he didn’t finish runs. You probably won’t see him much. Colt didn’t run at all in the beginning of the year, we were trying to keep him healthy because we knew he’d be marked this year and we’re pretty much in big trouble if we lose him.

So it came down to Colt and Newton who actually provided a nice spark when we needed it. I think he got over 100 yards against A&M. He was injured first part of the year. He’s Nate Newton’s son, good moves and good speed.

We don’t normally do a lot of tricky stuff with the run, mostly plain old zone reads and quarterback draws. We’ll use the pass to open up the run more than vice versa. Greg Davis takes a lot of heat but in my view his record is hard to beat and he usually calls his best games in big games, Nebraska aside.

Now how about a little bit from your side, if you don’t mind my asking. Who do you think will have primary responsibility for Jordan Shipley?

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 21, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

We will likely not put

one guy on Shipley. Our guys play a position and wherever Shipley lines up that is who has him. Because of that teams have tried to get their best guy on Marquis Johnson and when they have done that they have not often been succesful.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

by 5026 on Dec 21, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

That's probably a good approach

Thanks for the welcome, please excuse the earlier poster to this thread. Somebody let one of the chickens out of the pen.

We got away from our base defense against A&M and I think we learned a lesson from that, they scored 39 on us and it got ugly. And when people try to shut down Shipley it usually doesn’t work, opens something else up. Oklahoma was successful doing it but he was about half speed that game.

I think it’s gonna be a great game, two great schools with great tradition and great fans. I’m glad it’s you guys and not Florida that we’ll play, got so sick of Tebow though I think we could have handled them much easier. Damn, you made him cry :)

I waited for someone to post but didn’t want to leave him hangin. Our guys are all over the place and truly confuses me and apparently offenses too. Figured some one would straighten me out.

...and you might see some of Cody Johnson at RB

He’s the big back I was talking about, drags most people a few yards. I don’t expect we’ll see much of that in this game. We do expect an improvement in our o-line from the Nebraska game, though. Mack Brown has a way of getting coaches to fix that sort of thing. Not saying we’ll run consistently, but there will be an improvement I’m almost sure.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 21, 2009 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

rb by committee

we just couldn’t decide who the starter would be
between cody johnson, vondrel mcgree, tre newton, and fozzy whitaker
they all have different skill sets and depending on what we were doing that game
one might’ve been better than the other
i was huge on fozzy at the beginning of the year, he’s very shifty, but not very big
cody is a pile driver, literally and figuratively
vondrell doesn’t have good vision and hasn’t been a fit for the team the past few years
and tre newton is just a good solid all around player, he’s big enough, fast enough and shifty enough
500 yards but he didn’t play for about 3 games with a concussion

by abcdmetrius on Dec 22, 2009 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

i think his first game back was mizzou mid season

he’s been a fairly big surprise to be honest
we thought we had fozzy to start the year, and then he dinged up his knee
so we switched between vondrell and cody
similar styles, very different production … cody is just a mean runner
he hits people and fights for yards, but he’s not very fast or elusive
trey started the season behind all of them on the depth chart
but he showed his big enough to blitz block, fast enough to hit holes, strong enough to shed tackles, and he’s the best past catcher
he’s with chris obangnaya was to us last year, only faster and shiftier
we don’t have a homerun threat in the backfield though, a few years ago we had jamaal charles, and the wheel route was nearly automatic 6 points
i’m curious to see how we produce on the run this game, i predict we get about a solid 80ish yards total, which may not seem like much, but should be a good amount to fit into the game plan
we are most definitely not a smash mouth football team, but we do move the chains most games

expect a lot from both

Monroe is just a split second slower Goodwin (the fastest kid in the nation his age) so having them both back to return kicks is going to be sweet. I know McClain is fast but we’re talking these guys are faster than those “little guys” from Florida. Mack already said that Scott, who has not played a snap this year, will be in every phase of the kicking game and in a lot at safety because of his size and run stopping ability. With our size in the DBfield we are going to shut Ingram’s ass down. Good luck though and keep up the confidence, I spoke with a good friend of mine who starts on the defense and he said he knows that no one expects them to win and that they love it. Get ready to meet the Goon Squad. after all we’re wealthy, we’re arrogant, we’re Texas.

Do you forget that we actually play in a conference with offenses?

You honestly think your offense is loaded with more weapons than all the teams Texas’ defense has faced the past couple years? Yes that includes OU, Tech, Mizzou, Ok State and even TAMU’s Jerrod Johnson is twice as good as Mcelroy with no Heisman RB to make his life easy. Jones, Richardson and Ingram…very good. The rest….scrubs, complete scrubs. We’ve heard all this before SC thought they had all these weapons, White, Bush, Leinert, Smith…we won and our defense this year is better than that ‘05 defense. If you you guys had something besides the 1960’s to compare your team to…

When trash talking, please try not to use the same rehashed argument I’ve heard at least 20 times from UTx fans now. This arguments has been quashed not by words, but by actual play on the field:

How did OU’s “best offense in history” perform against UF last year in the Champ game? And how did Bama’s offense perform against that same UF defense this year?

Try not to use the argument above in the future to avoid making yourself look like a fool.

That glorious 2005 defense gave up 574 yards to USC.

So the 2009 team damn well better be better than the 2006 defense that got smoked. Also that USC team’s defense blew while Alabama’s is the best in the country.

Also, Colt McCoy couldn’t hold Vince Young’s jock strap.

This is not the 06 Rose Bowl. Come up with a new script.

Ok, well you don't forget that we actually play in a conference with defenses.

We played 8 top 25 defenses while UT played 2 top 25 defenses, and you struggled like hell to get by those two.

And please use concrete facts to state how Jerrod Johnson is twice as good as McElroy. Cuz if we’re going to play the “blanket statistics” game, I’ll go ahead and say that Ingram in a milliondy seven times better than Mack Brown.

Brown joked Cody’s domination will keep him from showing all of the game film to his team.

“Everywhere you look, they’re knocking people down,” Brown said. “We’ve been afraid to show it to our kids. We’ll try to limit how much film we show them. Cut some plays out and go real slow with them. We’re not going to feed them all of it at once.”

That's surprising Mack would say something like that...

he is usually good at coach speak. Cody has zero sacks on the year and Texas should not be worrying about him as much as his supporting cast such as Darius. Cody is a run stopper and that’s about all he is good for. Granted that is a big chunk of many teams offense but Texas as many of you know have had an atrocious running game. I seriously doubt we will be running the ball up the gut.

by Atownatx on Dec 22, 2009 8:23 AM CST up reply actions

I'm sure

the TX coaching staff would like to establish a run game in the MNC. As a result they need to convince their players that this years stats are not an indication of how good their running game truly is. I would imagine seeing Cody getting tackles by throwing the O-lineman at the RB wouldn’t be too comforting for these players either.

by atcrawford on Dec 22, 2009 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

Cody with no sacks...

Dude, please read up on the role of a 3-4 nose tackle. As you will find out, his job is not to make sacks, or even many tackles. It’s simply to plug (not stop) the run up the middle by taking on double teams by the guard and center. A true 3-4 nose guard will not rack up many stats on the collegiate level, but Cody, for instance, has done his job and has done it very well.

Class is officially in session...

“Cody is a run stopper and that’s all he’s good for”. That’s ALL a 3-4 nose tackle is good for. That’s their job! Their only secondary job is to occupy 2 offensive linemen during pass plays to free up gaps for blitzing LB’s to run through. Seriously, read the link that I provided you with, because obviously you don’t know the role of a 3-4 NT.

This is further proven by the fact that you are comparing UT’s NT to Cody. Dude, TEXAS RUNS A 4-3 DEFENSE! It’s night and day difference as to what the NT’s role is in these defenses.

The 3-4 defense is a run stopping defense, period. That’s why I don’t believe that Cody will be playing much in this game, because Bama will likely implement more of a pass stopping defense. In this case, Saban’s scheme of choice is the Nickel package. If it was guranteed that Texas would not even attempt to run the ball all game, Cody would see more offensive plays than he would defensive; because again, his job is not to be a pass rusher and get sacks.
