Urban Meyer Coming Back?

So after all the resignation talk, the Twitter is abuzz that Meyer has decided to stay:

mortreport

Reported to Espn: Urban meyer changes mind, now leave of absence with Asst Steve Adazzio now interim coach.

PeteThamelNYT

BREAKING NEWS: Urban Meyer has had a change of heart. He's taking an indefinite leave of absence and could now return as Gators coach.

Andy_Staples

A Florida recruit just told me word is being passed among committed players that Meyer will announce he is staying when they land in NOLA.

Not entirely sure what's going on with all this, but I think smartfootball is summing it up best:

Disheartening that Meyer might merely take a leave of absence during offseason. Point is he's so stressed during the yr could die.

Gotta wonder...

…how the flip-flopping will impact recruiting.

Gotta say, I hope he does what’s right for his health and his family. The man has nothing to prove to anyone, he’s been a winner everywhere. I know he’s motivated enough to want to keep going, but he’s gotta look after himself.

i agree

recruiting will probably take a hit, but you can take a small step down from where they were at recruiting wise and still be able to haul in national championship calibre talent.

he was injured. injured bad.

It's hard to believe...

he’d do that. Why would he announce he’s leaving then turn around and announce he’s staying? It’s like a bad high school boyfriend trying to up the attention level. Nothing good comes from being a flip-flopper.
He seems to be a class act, so I hope this isn’t the case.

i imagine a LOT of boosters and folks with connections...

spent a good part of yesterday afternoon and this morning talking with him. things that were set in stone friday probably are a lot different today. so we should expect this to take a few days to settle and get a solid answer on what will actually happen.

as for me, i’m good with it. i hope meyer does what’s best for him and his family although i’d love to see him stay on as the head man in gainesville. more pragmatically, this kerfuffle has now grabbed the attention of the mainstream media so we are unlikely to see crap like this bandied about by bored columnists over the next few days

STOP THE PRESSES?!!?!

Good lord – what is it with our coaches?

First Donovan does it, now Meyer?! Why can’t these guys make up their minds?
Hopefully this one has a better ending than the Donovan saga!

I think if he stays, the recruits will too.

The only negative, is that the entire Gator Nation is going to end up with heart conditions with all this flip flopping!

I am hopeful after an off-season, he will be ready to return to the sidelines….because if Adazzio is the interim, lord help us. That guy was in over his head as OC – now head coach?!!?

This is BULLSHIT...

Looks like Meyer didn’t like the fact that Florida got their asses waxed by Bama and lost the spotlight. This looks like an effort to get the gators back on the front pages of the sports world.

He doesn’t need a doctor, he needs a shrink!

Even Tebow said Meyer was fine going into the SEC Championship.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Urban Meyer…..to claim this is some sort of attention grab or has anything to do with Bama is ridiculous…..Coach Saban would not approve…..you are the type of Alabama fan who gives us a bad name…..you should be disassociated from the program……

From a Mother's perspective

Am I the only mother who posts here? I get the impression that is true, so my point of view is different from what it was before that world changing event called giving birth and raising a child. With my guess that about 50% of the college selections are guided by Mamma, I want to put this nicely. I would be extremely concerned about my son placing his entire future on the shoulders of any person with this much indecision (for whatever reason) as to what he is able to give. The Mammas of the world will view a maybe coach as worse than a new coach.

Here's a thought...

Meyer’s suffering pre-separation anxiety with Tebow going into the NFL. But after two years in the NFL Tebow is cut and returns to the gator sidelines as an assistant coach under Meyer who just came back after a two year leave of absence.

As crappy as that sounds, it’s no different than the Kool-Aid Gainsville is serving.

What is ......going on?

Seriously, was this just a ploy for more attention? It makes no sense, resign, step-down, leave of absence……………I do hope is health is fine, and I hope he makes everything clear at his press conference. As a College, and SEC football fan, I want to know whats up. Other that that everything is GREAT with BAMA !

by RB_BAMAFAN on Dec 27, 2009 3:01 PM CST reply actions

sympathetic

often, with life-changing decisions, i’ve had afterthoughts. i felt differently from day to day. and i didn’t have national media reporting every change of heart. likely he came to a decision but when he made it public gator staff and boosters came in and begged, assuring him they’d relief him of some of the stress. ultimately i doubt they can. if you’re driven, you’re driven. still, this pressure could impact his decision. not knowing the exact course to take, likely meyer is taking a middle road, a compromise that leaves options open.

say what?

espn reports sports news. the resignation/leave of absence of the winning coach of the last 2 of 3 national championships certainly qualifies as sports news. better to ask why yourself why you are reading sports news or playing around on a sports blog during tough economic times.

I remember it differently...

Tebow was the third and short qb or inside the ten. He scored the last TD against Ohio St.

by skycaster on Dec 27, 2009 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Tebow seemed to be the heart and soul of that team and won a couple of games that year — without him they don’t make the BCS game.

by wey on Dec 27, 2009 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

Was Tebow the heart and soul of the Utah team that finished undefeated too? And careful what you say about Utah, given recent events and all.
I also don’t remember Tebow playing for Bowling Green either.

And FYI, both the ’06 and ’08 titles were won just as much because of defense as anything else. Those 2 defenses were insane.

by skigator93 on Dec 27, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

lol, us against utah last year

can we please put that tired comparison to rest. they beat us in a meaningless game, and you’re insane 08 defense forgot to show up for the 09 SEC championship game, or did you forget that the two defenses were exactly the same players. And before you give me any carlos dunlap crap, we waxed ya’ll without one of our better defenders as well (Hightower).

by bamagary on Dec 27, 2009 11:39 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I agree too.

That’s why I referenced 2006 & 2008, and not 2009.

I think part of the problem in the SECCG this season was that our DC’s head was in other places. I am not sure how else you can not assign anyone to cover Julio Jones on the first play of the game. Regardless, yall beat us fair and square.

But to say that Meyer can’t win without Tebow when he has coached 9 winning seasons at 3 different schools is a little silly, don’t you think? His worst season ever was 9-4 and that was the year Tebow won the Heisman.

Frankly

I was behind Meyer when he was going to resign for health reasons. I thought he was making the right move. But now I’m not sure what the truth is in this matter but it can’t be a positive for UF. Either way uncertainty can kill a program.

What happened to concern for the family? Looks to me like it is now all about Urban.

He thinks he has stress now. Wait until he has no Tebow and he has to play Bama in T-Town.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

I don't know.

We can throw around the word “class” all willy-nilly if we want. But I hope this is the last installment of Corch Meyers-gate on RBR. On Saturday, I offered my prayers for Urban’s health, but I doubt he has ANY health problems that will limit him from coaching. There’s something going on behind the scenes and Foley and Urban are having a PR meltdown (that leads to tv time however) because of it. Maybe Urby is pissed Brian Kelly took his dream job. Maybe he wants to follow Tebow to the Jaguars (should he go there). If he’s about faith and family one day and the next says “I didn’t even tell my family I changed my mind,” then I don’t believe him. I’m signing skycaster’s petition to let the Urban Myth (of health related retirement) to die.

Thank You, BamaDIixi...

Even ESPN is calling this whole thing “bizzar” now. There’s something behind all of this and maybe it will come out and everything will return to some sense of normalcy in the college sporting world.

As for the bloggers who sign up just to make some kind of personal attack, please…when you’re in the media’s eye, like Meyer, and announce your resignation then retract less than 24 hours later and opt for a LOA, well you subject yourself to the wrath of crticism from whomever. Like it or not, we all have our freedom of expression wheather you agree or not.

We are all here to talk Alabama football. I would hope management could put a delay between signing up and participating, like a week, could fix these personal attacks against other bloggers and Bama football in general.

Sometimes my emotions get the best of me, but that what makes these sites more lively. If we all agreed and followed the general concensus, we wouldn’t have much to talk about. It’s are duty to question everything and not just “drink the Kool_Aid” (this relates to Jonestown and the cult blindy drinking the Kool-Aid and ending their life, bozeman) by taking things at face value.

Coach Saban is the best coach in the land

Guys like Meyer, Brown, Carroll, et. al- they’re pretty good themselves and have done remarkable jobs in their positions. Coach Meyer has health issues, this is obvious. Can we respect the man for needing to address that? As far as Meyer having a change of heart (no pun intended) and instead of resigning his HC position, he’ll be taking a ‘leave of absence’? This isn’t rocket science, it’s all about recruiting and maintaining that U of Florida Gators get those kids and provide their team with a solid base to continue to mount a challenge – not just in the SEC, but on a national level.

On the brightside

there will be no media attention, to distract Alabama from Texas. Every media outlet has just rented condos in Gainesville.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
