NYTimes writer raises issue of impact of SECCG loss on Urban
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/28/sports/ncaafootball/28rhoden.html
An Alabama fan can't raise this issue of course and most of the media have skirted it but Rhoden in the NYTimes seems to zero in on the impact of Urban getting humiliated in the SECCG. His father says Urban has a tough time with losses after all. I am biased but its a bit hard to imagine Urban getting "stressed" over running up the score on FSU or UGA. He always seemed to enjoy doing that so I am having a bit of trouble seeing him going to the hospital in that situation. But getting embarrassed in the SECCG and contemplating life without Tebow could be "stressful." (Well, not stressful like the situation Nick Saban encountered after the La Monroe game or Mike Shula faced pretty much his entire tenure or the stress soldiers have in Iraq or the stress defense lawyers have trying to get innocent defendants acquitted or prosecutors have trying to convict child rapists. But its still stressful I suppose. Stress is no fun but being able to handle stress used to be considered a "manly" virtue that separated the men from the boys. Now it seems its just another medical problem.) I think Meyer is a good coach and hope he stays and certainly hope he doesn't have serious health issues but he does seem to be getting a bit of a pass here. The mighty gators may better get the ol' pr machine humming because I think the media worm is turning after three years of Meyer/Tebow hagiography. Anyway, enough of Meyer -- we have a BCSCG to play.

I've heard this talk for a couple of days
of him not being able to get stressed out over FSU or UGA, and I don’t buy it. It’s not just a devastating loss that stresses a coach out. It’s the hours, days and weeks on end of preparation and coaching that slowly work on them and bring them to a breaking point sometimes, health-wise. I’m sure the SECCG contributed – it might have even been the breaking point, but to say “that’s what did it” is a bit naive.
"Let's go be champions, boys!" - Greg McElroy
We agreed it was too early for US to say Meyer got "processed," ...
But, that is apparently exactly what this reporter is saying. Interesting …
I have to think that there is a lot more to this than what we know, however. A host on ESPN radio this afternoon intimated that Meyer is actually leaving and plans to go to the NFL. I can’t imagine that is true, but who the hell knows at this point? I have to say, in my opinion all this jerking around is pretty selfish on Meyer’s part. If you’re going to do this and actually give a damn about your players and the university, you wait until after the bowl game. You make the game about the players; it’s their reward for a good season, after all. Now, nobody is talking about anything but Meyer. I’m not saying it’s intentional; it is damn sure selfish.
Dr. BamaFrazier is IN!
Bingo!
And when the AD at Florida realized that his ‘scooping’ of Meyer’s official announcement was about to screw up recruiting, not to mention player morale before (in my opinion) an important bowl game. . . . they tried to uncluster the clusterfuck that exploded the day after Christmas.
They do have PR people out there in Gainesville, don’t they?
If his health is that bad, he should at least take a year off. If he wants go leave Florida when T2 leaves for greener pastures in the NFL? Then he should just get stuff in order and do so.
You’re right on many fronts BamaFrazier- they should have just waited until after their bowl game. Things would have gone a lot smoother and they’d have time to inform those uncommitted recruits and salvaged what was lost on the recruiting front from this somewhat premature announcement. It’s just retardation in the weirdest way, all the way around.
FWIW: Get well coach.

Waiting until after the bowl
I don’t think it would have made a difference. At least now, the players have something to play for. you know what it’s like to lose your first game in the SECCG and then not have much motivation to play in the Sugar, right?
The way it went down sort of sucks – it would have been better for him to make 1 final decision instead of 2. But I don’t think it would have been better to wait.
Recruiting, not bowl game aspects
There’s a lot of recruits looking at Florida as well as . . . .say USC? And some of them might have to give ’Bama a second look.
Would you rather play for Addazio (whatever his name is?) or Saban? Or Brown? Or Carroll?
No Tebow, no Meyer- not a dilemma! I’m going to the Tide, Texas, or USC- end of story! Say he (Meyer) kept his word and flat out resigned? You think those recruits wanna make their trek to Gainesville without Meyer on board, knowing full well the road to a BCS championship goes through Tuscaloosa?

You only have so many schollys to offer
as does UT and USC. Therefore, only about 60 players total (a few less) get offered by those schools.
Regardless – there is no difference. Are we better off with recruiting by having Meyer possibly coming back and having Adazzio as interim head? Or would we be better off with Meyer retired and maybe a Charlie Strong or a Chris Peterson? The timing of Meyer’s decision didn’t matter. The only way that the timing would have mattered is if he waited until January – AFTER some of our blue chippers were enrolled and then announced it – which would have been a dick move that probably would have hurt future recruiting worse. Either that or waited until after signing day.
We'll never know
As it is, it’s my understanding that the great Florida AD trumped the news before Meyer actually made his final decision. It was a great move for the Florida AD to do that, as Meyer decision (if based on the recommendations from his family and doctors to resign asap) to do a complete turnabout and say he was saying. He said he re-thought his decision after seeing them practice the following day after the AD’s announcement.
He saw the writing on the wall and Florida has got to have a top class to compete with Saban’s growing class.
Again, the BCS championship is going through Tuscaloosa in the next 2 – 4 years. Without a stellar class, regardless of the limit (we know how those work out) Florida will be seeing the rear end of a few other teams in the SEC. ESPECIALLY without T2 and his incredible play on the field.

It's a little premature to say
that the BCSCG is going through Tuscaloosa the next 2-4 years. Stars move on – typically before their 4 years are up and they must be replaced. Everyone likes to think that they simply reload every year, but since no team has gone back-to-back since what? Nebraska in ’95 and ’96, you might be jumping the gun just a bit.
Premature, maybe
But not entirely, inaccurate. If we fielded a frosh-soph team, they’d be contenders in the SEC West. I’ll stand by the 2 – 4 years. Just as I believed, even up until this season’s past SECCG that the road to the BCS went through Gainesville for the previous 3 seasons (Harvin, Tebow, et. al).
Stars do move on, but the athletes and players on this team right now are part of bringing the Tide back to prominence. Money is a lure that is too tough to ignore and too tempting not to be entranced by- this is true. The champions that are on Saban’s 2009 team are a special bunch, and admittedly- that’s the homer-in-me speaking. But, I would hazard to guess most of these guys (underclassmen) stay on for their full 4 years. The coaching they’re getting are as good as the coaching the players have been getting out in Gainesville, if not better. (Meyer’s staff is being minimally dismantled, Saban’s staff? so far, so good).
The only way these players leave are:
1) Coaching attrition
2) Transfer (Star Jackson?)
3) Receiving unparalleled awards & recognition (whereby, it would be silly of them to stay and not cash out at the apex of their college football celebrity)
Otherwise, this bunch stays together for the full 4 (5, depending?) scholarship years.

you forgot the most important reason....
4) Cash. After this year, the rookie salary cap kicks in and first rounders in 2011 will earn much less than first rounders in 2010….that is if there is even an NFL season to play in 2011.
I would venture to say that if all of UF’s juniors returned to play in 2010, I would feel pretty good about our chances of playing Bama twice next season.
As for coaching – get ready. It took until year 5 for Meyer’s staff to be dismantled. Kirby has already been mentioned – he won’t stay a DC for long with the units he’s putting out there.
Cash
Very very good point!

don't get me wrong though....
I do understand that the Tide will be a serious contender for so long as Saban is at the wheel. You may have “down” years – meaning 10-2 or 9-3 and a New Years Day Bowl (wouldn’t most programs be delighted with that?!), but very unlikely to have 2 years in a row when you’re not seriously in the mix.
Just for fun – if Saban decided to retire or leave for personal reasons, who would you favor as a rsuccessor? I know it’s a strange question, but damn, as we found out – you never know!
Would you want Coach Smart to take over or would you rather have someone with head coaching experience?
Head coaching experience...
…is a must…Coach Smart is a fantastic coach, but before he gets behind the wheel of this program, he needs to learn to drive a smaller one first….

Arggggh!
Don’t make me think of that? I’ve got Coach Saban so close to my heart . . . . .AND WE HAVEN’T WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP YET! But here’s where I’m at: Coach Saban has got the pieces together and I’m sure he’s got replacements in mind. We’ve got Kirby & JimMac- who are going through the roof right now as far as heading on to greener pastures (doubt it, this is a perfect storm of coaches in my estimation and the fruits of their labor is just now being realized). I can’t think of anyone to replace Coach right now. It, seriously- I’m not joking, makes my heart hurt pondering the idea.
Let’s win one first (which we will!) and then. . . .let the summer blues take over. . . . .maybe, just maybe I can finish the thought of your question. Right now I can’t. I’m not even joking.
Short list would have Chip Kelly or Whittingham on a lateral move, to complement JimMac if he stays. I won’t look towards any one else in the Pac 10, MWaC, or Big 12. (Pelini on a lateral move or Stoops from Arizona- now Florida State look good to me too. But I just can’t see ANY OF THESE m-fers in Crimson and White just yet. Only Coach Saban)

Um...
…I may be missing your point, Bix, but if you’re talking about any of these guys moving to our staff…that’s not a lateral move….

I am wrong on Stoops, this I know but, . . . .
I’m talking about the D coordinator who just joined Jimbo Fisher at Florida State. This Stoops kid is the real deal though. He has a fine acumen for X’s and O’s. Check that Stoops boy out. A lot better than his two older brothers, in my estimation. But still, he can’t hold Saban’s jock!

Good luck against Cincy
How’s that game looking for y’all? You got your guys all back, I mean- I hate to mention it but those traffic tix and such? I took Cincy straight up because the payout was handsome at $500. If I lose, I lose- and I think I might. (brother and I went $250 each on that game and $150 ea for the Ore/tOSU game- again straight up)
I’ll not bet jackson on ‘Bama. I’m very superstitious about certain things. . . . .!
Again, good luck to the Gators and I mean that brotha!

Thanks man
I think our game is a 50/50, but that you’ll know the outcome in the first 5 minutes – just like the SEC game. You will know if we’re ready to play or not on the first couple possessions.
My guess is that Dunlap will have a monster game playing with the pent up guilt that he hurt his team and let everyone down before the SECCG….that and as a final audition for the NFL, to show them that his talent outweighs his stupidity and he’s worth a draft pick.
Happy New Year to all-
Payouts were terrible for . . .
. . . .a Gator pick. Out here they’ve got 13 pt plus spread? That’s outrageous. I like Florida in that game and I’d love to see ’em win, but not if I wanna make money on the game. Happy New Year to you too my man!

stress
stress is when a coach see the future and its all CRIMSON!!!!
Listened to a few minutes on Rivals Radio this morning . .
and the writer Tom Dienhart raised the same issue — if UF had won, would this even be an issue right now? Media definitely feeling burned by Urban:
http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2009/12/28/florida-shouldnt-take-meyer-back/
Urban should've waited on this announcment.
No-way Floridas 2010 recruiting class doesn’t take a hit. Too many coaches jumping ship right now. Bama has been fighting Fla for a couple of guys. Chris Dunkley 5-star WR, Christian Jones 4-star OLB, I wonder how this will work out now? I’m watching for defectors also!
Your temper brings dishonor to my happy mooshu palace.
It will be interesting...
to see how the gator nation will process the next 9 months. Will patience give way to revolt?
Like a soap opera “As the Gator Nation turns” and the world will be watching.
Got that winning feelin'
We have the best AD in the country
We’ll be alright.
We’ll hire a good DC, we’ll sign some good players and forge ahead.
Expectations for 2010 were low for us realists anyway – too many departing starters. I was expecting something like 2007, but sans Tebow!
meyers a wuss
I never thought anybody would show up and make me think Spurrier wasnt the most classless coach ever, albeit a great football mind but still classless, and lo and behold meyer arrives, what a jerk,if his health is so bad why are all his medical tests negative? His problem is in his head, what a classless jerk. RTR!!!!!
Remember, It's....
your choice to blog on RBR. What do you expect to read, that Meyer isn’t an egotistical media grabbing prick.
As ESPN would sayt, “Come on, Man”
Got that winning feelin'
from smart people - yes
So I’ll just consider the source.
Being sick does not make somebody an asshole. But judging someone you know only from what you read on blogs and in the media does make you one.
