Nico2.0's Favorite Music of 2009: ST. VINCENT
I was out of town all last week so I didn't put any more of these up (well, I've only done one so far anyway.)
ST. VINCENT
Actor
Up this time is ST. VINCENT, the "band name" under which Annie Clark performs. It's kind of similar naming device like Sam Beam is Iron & Wine and Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails, etc. She incorporates a lot of different influences into her music. Everything from Talking Heads to Philip Glass. Anyway, her new record Actor is the follow up to her highly acclaimed debut Marry Me. I've included two different songs here, a live performance of "Marrow" from the Jimmy Kimmel Show and the video for "Actor Out of Work." I really wish there were a quality video on the YouTubes of one of my favorites, "Laughing With a Mouth Full of Blood" which sounds way grimmer than it actually is. Anyway, two songs ought to help you get the vibe...
First up..."Marrow"
Next, "Actor Out of Work"...

Neither of these songs...
…showcases it particularly well, but she’s an incredible guitar player too.
Never heard of her...
but I like what you have here. Does she write all her own stuff?

Yes she does.
I saw her a good while back when she was opening for John Vanderslice (ended up sneaking Mr Vanderslice out after the show cause he didnt want to drink with his friends and dropping him off at his hotel).
I remember all the indie nerds going up sfter her set and not only admiring her but also her keyboard and such set up.

What on earth about that sounds like DMB?
Obviously art and music are subjective, but I don’t hear it at all…other than the fact that there’s a saxophone.
Checking the number of votes...
…it seems you’re posting these for a select few here at RBR…but please, keep it up…these are some of my favorite posts…and a great distraction from the waiting for Jan. 7….

Hoping to have another up today or tomorrow
In the past they’ve gotten more discussion, maybe it’s just that I’ve chosen some obscure stuff to start with…
I checked out more of her music
on youtube, and you’re dead on about her guitar ability. She’s good, and I like a couple of the acoustic songs she did even better than the big mixed stuff on here. Definitely versatile in her style of music, and her voice is great, in a ghostly kind of way. Thanks for posting these.

She puts on a fantastic live show too...
…I’ve seen her three or four times now and she never disappoints.
