The AFCA defines "major probation'' as a school receiving sanctions that include loss of TV appearances, loss of postseason play or loss of 20 percent of total scholarships in a given season.

Todd Bell, director of media relations for the AFCA, the American Football Coaches Association, as quoted in The Birmingham News. Alabama received none of those sanctions by the NCAA, making it eligible for the USAToday Coaches Poll and subsequent BCS ranking.
