Favorite Music of '09: MASTODON
Of the three things I've posted so far, this is the most popular. I think this album debuted at #10 or #11 on the Billboard charts. Metal is in a bit of a renaissance right now with tons of subgenres creating a lot of diverse, excellent music. So, a little heaviness for those of you who thought that last two entries were a bit "arty":
MASTODON
Crack the Skye
This is easily the "lightest" album Mastodon has put out. Earlier efforts were much heavier, but this one has incorporated more singing and a greater use of melody instead of relentless screaming and churning (which certainly have their own merits.) This is the third part of a trilogy of albums about water (Leviathan....yeah, they did a concept album about Moby Dick), earth (Blood Mountain) and air (Crack the Skye).
There's a bit of a local connection here as well. Singer/guitarist Brent Hinds is from Pelham, a suburb of Birmingham and, according to Wikipedia, went to the Alabama School of Fine Arts for high school. When they played a show here earlier this year, he brought his grandmother out on stage, which was awesome. Even more awesome was her up on the balcony fist pumping to the music. Too cool. Anwyay, Hinds is the first guy to sing in the song "Divinations" (they rotate lead singing duties, so I had to point him out.) Mastodon calls Atlanta home. Anyway, here are two cuts from their new album, Crack the Skye...
Divinations...
Oblivion...

Much better Nico. Much better.
Best release of the year, however, belongs to Haggard “Tales of Itheria”

There's more stuff along these lines...
…on the way. I cover a lot of ground though. I’ll have to check out that release you mentioned up there. Haven’t heard it.
17 piece classical-metal outfit out of Germany
and, only affirms what I always have maintained…Mozart would play metal if he were born in the 20th century.

It's funny though
I love orchestral music, but don’t care much for Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, etc. I’m much more into 20th & 21st Century stuff and some Romantic period. I also like a lot of early music…but I mean waaaaay early as in anonymous compositions. The Alphonso X El Sabio cantigas are awesome though for attributed early music.
Beethoven = deity

I should say that out of that bunch...
…that I was the most unfair to Beethoven. I do own a few discs of his music and listen to them occasionally, but I seldom see an orchestra’s program for the year and am like “Yes! Beethoven.” On a limited orchestra going budget (because that junk’s expensive), I’m more likely to opt for the night they’re playing Tan Dun or Messiaen or Mahler or something.
Mahler is cool
for about 20 minutes. If it’s schoenberg, half that. Atonality was an idea whose time came and left…and left us with a migraine.

Mahler...
…is not atonal at all. I don’t think that’s what you were insinuating, but just to clarify in case. Just like most other genres, some atonal music is cool, some is crap. I don’t listen to much of it. It’s unfortunate that people don’t realize there was amazing tonal music being made for the majority of the 20th century and currently in the 21st.
Gustav is not atonal
But I have about a 20 minute threshold. Schoenburg (and atonality) quickly destroys me…looking at you, Morbid Angel.
