LSU junior defensive lineman Akiem Hicks allegedly received money from wide receivers coach D.J. McCarthy to transfer to LSU from Sacramento City Community College in California, The Daily Reveille learned on Thursday.
This transaction led to an NCAA violation that a source familiar with the situation said became known to the team following the Arkansas game last Saturday.
The Daily Reveille: McCarthy paid Akiem Hicks to come to LSU
I'm going to take this one with a grain of salt simply because its the LSU student newspaper doing the reporting -- remember they were the ones saying Saban was in Baton Rouge interviewing for the LSU job in December of 2007 -- but this one is going to turn into some very big news if this indeed turns out to be the case.

If this is true
this is very, very bad news. Just when the conference had gone a year or two without anyone being on NCAA double-secret probation (and, no, I didn’t forget about the ridiculous textbook crap; I’m talking about competitive advantage-type infractions).

This seems a bit different than a coaching rumor
I agree that until a second source confirms it, this news should be held in doubt. However, everyone and his brother reports rumors about coaching searches. Effectively accusing an assistant coach of paying a player is on a completely different level. If it’s true, this news is big and ugly.
if this is indeed true,
then how many other players that he recruited does this potentially apply to?

Lots...
He has recruited lots of other highly-touted prospects, including Reuben Randle, Chris Davenport, Mike Ford, Chancey Aghayere and Karnell Hatcher.
And to me, as I posted a few days ago, that is the real issue here. Here’s a wide receiver coach… paying a defensive linemen to sign? Now can you honestly sit there and tell me that he didn’t do something similar for a guy like Randle? That’s my issue.
At any rate, though, again I’m still taking this one with a very big grain of salt. I don’t really have much confidence in anything a student newspaper reports.

Taking it with a grain of salt-
thats what rational fanbases do…our rivals on the other hand would make Saban farting too loud a NCAA violation..

Death Penalty!!!!!!!!
If true, you would think in today’s age with any news story hitting the interweb in about the same sec it happened this would eventually stop. If true, student papers are about as reliable as social security.

If true....
stick a fork in the mad hater, because if lsu goes on probation, he is done! He pulled his @$$ out of the fire with the comeback win over Arkansas, but there is no comeback for this.

The Reveille has at least temporarily pulled the story...
… but they have offered no explanation for the move.
Associated Content does have a story up along these same lines outlining the same basic allegations.

If so...
I can think of a Promised Land that might be interested.
Rueban Randall can always transfer to UA.
He’ll be eligible as soon as McCarron starts his first season under center.
