A couple Thoughts on Texas

Naturally, assuming that Texas is Alabama's opponent in Pasadena...

I watched the game vs. Nebraska, and thought of a couple things that might make Alabama fans happy.

1) Texas has moved to imitate Florida. Texas' running game has diminished in each game. They depend on McCoy more and more in a way that makes Florida look 2-dimensional. Whether this move is part of Texas' attempts to make McCoy the Heisman or not: the point is, Texas runs McCoy a lot like Florida runs Tebow. The "Tebow SMASH" meme can be equally applied to Texas. They depend on his arm, and if not that, his legs. He ran through holes that, if against Alabama, would be filled by McClain at the best, Reamer at the worst. I see Alabama's game plan against Texas being similar to that against Florida. The QB is the best player; Shipley is similar to Brandon James or Cooper; and Hernandez is Texas' number 2.

2) Texas absolutely let their bowels loose against an SEC-style defense. Bo Pelini was LSU's defensive coordinator before taking the job for Nebraska. I think it is safe to say that Pelini has tried to reproduce the same system at Nebraska. Except, Alabama has substantially better players on Defense than Nebraska. I'd like to see OTS' thoughts on this: I think Nebraska ran an SEC-style defense against Texas, but w/o SEC caliber players. In my opinion, Alabama's defense may hold Texas to less than the 13 points Nebraska gave up.

Roll them Tides.

Texas looked terrible. They beat Nebraska by one second and one inch.

Their offense had three interceptions and just over 200 yards of offense. Their two field goal drives in the second half were mostly penalty yardage.

The unbelievable clock management on the last play before the field goal almost went down as the greatest gaffe in college football history. McCoy obviously had no idea how little time was left and if the Nebraska player reaches him a split second later causing him to throw it away a split second later, the clock runs out and Nebraska wins. If McCoy puts a little more air on the ball, or throws it a little further out of bounds, or sprints a step more before releasing the ball, Nebraska wins. Mack Brown’s legacy would have been ruined for completely throwing a season and national title shot away on a complete blunder.

But then the field goal squeezed between the uprights by a foot and the rest is history. Fortune was simply on Texas’ side.

Obviously this game could galvanize Texas like the Auburn game did for us, and they will have a month to prepare and are capable of playing better than they did against Nebraska tonight, but we will be favored and should beat Texas.

Their spread really looks like a slower less effective version of what we just trounced in the SEC title game tonight. Alabama obviously has a lot of hard work to do to prepare for this game, but assuming they don’t let the favorite talk go to their heads and take Texas lightly, I like our chances.

My thoughts

I think that you arer not giving Nebraska’s defense enough credit. They played really well, and i wouldnt want to go up against them if i was the bowl team they are playing.

Texas’s O-line SUCKS. Seriously, and they had given up like 22 sacks before this game (with a mobile qb). I think our defensive line will have their way.

As much as everyone says Texas has a stout defense, last night should be no judge of that because lets be honest, based on that game last night, Nebraska probably has more 3 and outs this year than anyone. So you cant say too much about Texas’ defense, which honestly looked a little slow to me.

…based on that game last night, Nebraska probably has more 3 and outs this year than anyone.

They have a pretty weak offense for sure. They scored less than 20 in five games (we only did that once) and they only scored 20 or more against BCS conference competition four times. That was against the murderer’s row of Baylor, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri (who have a combined record of 20-28…with eight of those wins coming from Missouri.)

Going into that game

Nebraska had the 92nd ranked O…against anyone reasonably competent, they’ve s*** the bed. Texas’ malaise can be traced to two things: 1) They live on the short game (short passes that crappy teams don’t tackle on), but against good defenses don’t work, and 2) they can’t run (and are, to a tee, the epitome of finesse, hence Suh mauling them in the passing game as well).

Man up, and old-style smash these guys

You can give credit to Nebraska's defense.....

…..but you can’t give Texas’s offense credit for playing well against a good defense. See the Oklahoma and Nebraska games.

Bama will destroy Texas.....

I know their offense is in the top 10 and their defense as well. McCoy is the most accurate passer in history, but against the team that crushed Florida, it should be no problem.
This is the biggest mismatch in a BCS Championship Game since USC, the team of all time, with its two Heisman Winners played Texas in 2005.

No disrespect, but...

If that was the biggest mismatch, then what say you about the final score of that game? Pretty sure the team you’re talking about being so overly matched won the whole thing. If you want a really good example of a mismatch, go to Nebraska v. Miami. Not a BCS game, but a recent championship mismatch.

Side note, looking forward to the national championship game. Been to Pasadena twice, and while I feel shakier about this game more so than the last two (Mich in 04 and USC 05), it will be a great experience. Best of luck to you Tide fans, we’ll see you down there.
