The Best Fla QB Ever
For the past 3 years we have been hearing that Timmy Tebow was the greatest football player in the history of college football. This is just a bunch of crap. He isn't even close to being the greatest player ever. But more telling than that is that Timmy is not even the best qb to play at Florida.
In 3 years of being the starting qb Tim Tebow has won 1 SEC title, 1 National Championship, and 1 Heisman Trophy. (I'm going to assume he will not win the Heisman this year because he was expsoed by Bama.) I know he was on a team as a freshman that won it all...but he was not the starter. So, although he has NC 2 rings, we should only judge him on his starts. To top it all off Tebow failed in his senior year to win anything except the SEC East , although he did get to rub noses with his coach.
Consider the best qb in UF history- Danny Wuerffel. Although somewhat more humble than Tebow he is also a Christian. Danny Wuerffel started at qb for UF for 4 years. During that time he won 4 SEC titles, 1 National Championship, and 1 Heisman Trophy. And...he went out a winner winning the NC in his senor season.
Now Wuerffel never got the media attention nor was he called the greatest football player ever. He didn't wear Bible verses under his eyes or cry or jump around on the side lines yelling at his team mates, or do any of the other things we normally associate with the greatest player of all time. We he did was win championships, and 3 of his SEC titles were over Bama (ouch!).
So, For my money the only thing that really counts is results...trophies in the case. In this case it is Wuerffel 6, Tebow 3. And besides, I actually like Danny Wuerffel even though he beat us all those times.

I have always thought of wuerffel as...
a system quarterback. he has spurrier to thank for those damn gaudy passing yards and records. wuerffel was the best quarterback spurrier ever had that could play the way spurrier wanted a qb to play. tebow on the other hand isn’t what I consider a system quarterback…. though meyer’s run/pass option is well suited for tebows talents. I think tebow could have won a NC at damn near any FBS college he chose to play at. wuerffel I don’t think could have done that except at florida under spurrier.
maybe I’m way out in left field for thinking this way. I’m not drinking any kool-aid, but wuerffel wasn’t half the athlete as tim. at least no one can disagree, without having brain damage, that florida has had two of the greatest quarterback that have ever played the game.
so easy... even an Auburn fan can do it!
well
theres a ton of offenses tebow couldn’t run nearly as well as teh system urban has in florida.
and i think wuerffel would be exceedingly effective in a lot of college offenses.
he was injured. injured bad.
Seconded.

interesting...
because I think the exact opposite. tebow could be exceedingly effective in a lot of college offenses… and wuerffel couldn’t have played well outside of spurrier’s system
so easy... even an Auburn fan can do it!
Tebow's release...
…is like the second hand on a clock…he should watch film of GMac….

This...
…is a good post…nothing against Tebow (not after last night), but I did admire the way Wuerffel handled himself (though I despised his HC and team for stopping us short three times). To be fair, I do think that yesterday’s humiliation helped Tebow act more like Wuerffel, with true humility rather than what we’ve grown accustomed to over the last few years. I also think that Tebow is the best…fullback…in Florida history.

Also, a little off-topic...
…but Greg McElroy is still undefeated as a starter…that is all….

yeah - he won plenty of games as back up too
Didn’t he only start 1 or 2 years in high school?
that makes sense then
He took a giant step on Saturday – some of his throws were absolutely stellar.
He was also smart enough to find the weaker link – Janoris Jenkins, and not throw Joe Haden’s way. I think Haden and Jay Howard might be the only Gators who came to work Saturday night. Haden pretty much blanked Julio. The first play was Strong’s brilliance – he didn’t put anyone on Jones. I was screaming from my end zone seats “Nobody is on Julio!! Somebody cover Julio!!” An easy wide-opne catch for 18 yards later, we decided maybe we should cover him. He only had 1 more catch the entire game.
Hopefully McElroy just maturing into an outright superstar – he certainly looked to be one in that game. And that’s a huge game for a first year starter to step up. My hat is tipped.
I was...
…screaming from my end zone seats as well…all day long. Thanks for the tip of the hat. Though I expected us to win, I don’t think most of us expected quite the domination we witnessed Saturday. I will say that almost all the Gator fans I encountered in Atlanta this year showed a lot of class. I’ll look for you at next year’s game. Cheers.

Who cares...
…who is considered FL’s greatest QB? What does that have to do with us going to Pasedena? Jeez, I thought talking about Tebow was finally OVER after last night.

threw a prettier corner-fade than Danny Wuerfel.

absolutely agree...
he was the best college QB I saw in person. When you consider that I only missed a handful of games between ‘91-’94, that’s a lot of QB’s. (including Gino Toretta… teh hee.) Pin point accuracy.
I also agree that he was more likable than Tebow. Of course I have to wonder how much of that has to do with the overwhelming amount of media exposure players get now vs. then. (e.g. there were only 2 espn channels back then) :)
True on the fade
Nobody in the history of college football threw it better.
BUT….and this is a big one. Wuerffel had much better receivers than Tebow. Tebow get get to throw to Percy for about a season and a half (tons on injuries kept Percy out of games or severaly limited), while Wuerffel got to throw to Reidel Anthony, Ike Hilliard, Chris Doering, Jack Jackson & Jaquez Green.
I think in the end, I would say that Wuerffel was the better QB, but Tebow was definitely the better player. Danny played his roled and that was it – he played it amazingly well, but he wasn’t the guy that could carry his team to a win when others weren’t performing.
Tebow
I got my Christmas Wish……….Alabama beat Florida and I got to see Tebow cry on national TV and knew that BAMA caused it. GREAT BALLGAME….brought back memories of 1993.
Look
just because the entire ESPN staff has a man crush on Tebow doesn’t mean he isn’t one of the greatest to play the college game. His Heisman season is the best single season I have ever seen in my life by a single player, ever. Call him a system QB, it’s true. Say he won’t succede in the NFL, he probably won’t. But don’t take away who he is and what he has done. We’re lucky to have seen him play, and very lucky to have seen the greatest Bama team in the past 15 years send him packing with such a lopsided loss.

I thought he was much better in 2008 than the year he actually won the trophy…but, whatevs….

Tebow might not have been a starter...
…on the ‘06 team, but to insinuate he didn’t significantly contribute to that team is inaccurate. He’s got 2 NCs, 2 SECs and a Heisman. He didn’t get those ’06 rings for being on the roster. He had 18 carries, a pass and a TD in those two games. Not too shabby.
Yeah but...
qb’s are judged by their starts. Now if he had been a co-starter with Leak ok…but he was really a change of pace and goal line speacialists. I’d say UF would win in the NC 2006 with or without Tebow. But, without Leak, with just Tebow at qb, I don’t think they win it.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
UF
Doesn’t play in the 2006 national championship game without Tebow.

Isn’t exactly replacable, especially for Florida.

with Tebow instead of Leak in 2006
we don’t lose to Auburn. Leak was a game manager at that point and nothing more. We won games because of an excellent defense. He was terrible running the spread. He did play a great game against Ohio State – but I think Ohio State was just overmatched. Troy Smith was getting worked in that game.
You guys should root against Ingram winning the Heisman – it’s a recent jinx. Reggie Bush lost in ’05 after winning the award, Troy Smith lost in ’06, Tebow lost in ’07, Bradford lost in ’08…..
All the hoopla is a big distraction for the winner – they should award it after the bowl games are played.
I agree...

Did Danny Whathisface
Run for an SEC record in TDs while also having a stellar passing efficiency? I think he only did the latter, and he didn’t do it quite as well as Tim Tebow. Danny had a 163.56 QB Rating through his 4 starts; Tim Tebow has 166.25 to date. Tim Tebow also has 678 career rushing attempts, 2896 yards, and 56 touchdowns.

If we are going off titles and awards
Chris Weinke from FSU should also be in the mix. 3 division titles. 32-3 as a starter and he played in 3 National Championships winning one and also won the Heisman. Probably would have won 2 titles if not for a season ending injury in 98’.
Striker: "Surely you can't be serious!" Rumack: "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
Here's the hitch
he played in 3 National Championships winning one
He was 1-2 in championship games. Tons of players have 1 title and 1 Heisman. If Weinke had led the ‘Noles to another national championship, he would be mentioned more in the greatness discussion. Wasn’t he shut out in one of the title games?
Actually he was 1-1
But he led the Noles to 3 title games. In 1998 he led us to a 9-1 record before he was knocked out for the season in the last game of the year. Marcus Outzen started instead for Weinke in the national championship game and went 9 of 22 passes for 145 yards, but suffered two interceptions. FSU ended up losing 23-16 to Tenn. If Weinke plays we win that game. That team was loaded.
Striker: "Surely you can't be serious!" Rumack: "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
Oh c'mon skigator
you can read. He went 1-1 and he lead us to 3 national championships and he has a better record than Tebow and arguably will have a longer pro career than him. Yeah he lost to Ok. it’s common knowledge. Richt moving out of FSU’s offices and going to Georgia might have had something to do with the offensive gameplan for the Ok. game. Hey no excuses though right? The fact of the matter is that Weinke has a better record and led his team to more championship games than Tebow did….period.

I agree
Only 3 teams scored more than 21 points on them all year. 8 teams they held to 14 points or less. 7 guys on that defense went to the NFL the most notable being Roy Williams.
Striker: "Surely you can't be serious!" Rumack: "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
Nah - I'm not buying the Weinke Chow
He THREW for less TDs than Tebow, not to mention he ran for 55 less TDs.
He also sucked in the NFL – so sitting on the bench for a few years doesn’t exactly qualify as “a pro career” in my book. He started one season and set a record for most losses (15) at the time. Understood that he was on a sorry team, but he didn’t exactly do anything to help turn it around. He was then benched for the rest of his “NFL career.”
The fact of the matter is Tebow wears 2 rings – twice as many as Weinke.
