Welcome Texas Fans!

Thank you, Coach Royal. You are a gentleman and scholar of the highest caliber.
A number of folks who wear the burnt orange on a regular basis and without a shred of irony have appeared on our humble little blog over the last day or so. Quite a few of them have come from fellow SB Nation blog for all things Texas Burnt Orange Nation. We here at Roll Bama Roll would like to welcome you all and hope you choose to stay awhile.
Both football programs boast a formidable amount of tradition, pride and, most importantly, respect for the game as well as their opponents. As much as we want to be the one that emerge victorious on Jan. 7, it's important to remember that what we have in common is much more important that what divides us. The next month is a fantastic opportunity for both sides to learn a bit about each other in a way we may never have a chance to ever again.
And if ever our tempers get frayed we, as Alabama fans, must keep in mind that we owe Texas a debt of gratitude on a scale difficult for us to ever repay. Because in 1970, Coach Bryant traveled to Austin and Texas head coach Darrell Royal was kind enough to explain the intricacies of his Wishbone offense to him. That fueled Bryant's career resurgence and, arguably, paved the way for three of the National Championship titles we now claim as our own.
So welcome, Texas fans. And Roll Tide!
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Sometime in the next month...
…can we get a write-up on great moments in Tex-abama Football History? When I expressed a desire to play Texas since we had never beaten them, an older gentleman on the MARTA after the game said “Well, not officially. Joe Willie made it in twice and they wouldn’t give it to him.” So, if anyone else is interested, I’d like to see something on that 1965 Orange Bowl and other such moments.
There are...
…no great moments in Texas-Alabama football history, since we’ve never won…only decent moments….

SEC replay officials certainly would have gotten it right
Seriously, though, thanks for the welcome to us proud wearers of burnt orange.
To reflect the sentiments of the OP, I too am thrilled about this match-up. When I think of true college football royalty, Alabama is one of the very few programs which comes to mind. I am so glad that I will have an opportunity to hang out and chat with Bama fans before the game rather than the jort-wearers from Gainesville.
I’ve actually had a chance to see a lot of Alabama — and when I say a lot, I mean a lot. Last fall, a project for work took me to all 67 counties in Alabama over the course of a 10-day period in the middle of football season. (I started my own architectural stock photo business last year, by way of explanation, and I picked Alabama as a test-case for such thorough treatment more or less at random.) And I have to say that I was stunned, in a very pleasant way, to see the depth of support the Crimson Tide had throughout the entire state. I don’t think I have ever witnessed such deep and visible support for any team, pro or college, anywhere. I had expected more of a split with Auburn, but other than a narrow pocket near their campus, support for Auburn statewide was virtually nonexistent. (Would I have noticed differently had I visited at a time when Bama was struggling and Auburn as #2?)
And as I made the trip right after Texas had ascended to #1, leapfrogging Bama after our victory over the evil crimson-wearers, I of course was wearing my Longhorn gear everywhere. Not a negative word was said my way, and I actually received quite a few kind words and wishes that we’d meet in Miami. Alas it was not to be, but a year later and here we are.
I should also say that, in my travels throughout the country (all 50 states in the last 15 months), the one little non-work-related site-seeing treat I generally give myself is that I’ll go out of my way a bit to visit colleges and, more specifically, major conference college stadiums. I’ve seen a lot of campuses and a lot of stadiums, some I liked and some I disliked (FSU’s was surprisingly disappointing), but none I liked better than Alabama’s campus and the setting for games at Bryant-Denny Stadium. If Hollywood were to create an idyllic setting for college football, all that would need to be done would be to transport film crews to Tuscaloosa. Alabama has long been at the top of my list for a dream home-and-home series.
Oh, and Dreamworks BBQ, particularly the original location in Tuscaloosa, gets a thumbs-up from this Texan.
So even though I am simultaneously excited, confident and scared as hell about the match-up on the playing field, I am looking forward to the build-up to the game much more than I would have been had we been playing virtually any other team.
So Hook ’em, and good luck next month!

Thanks for the kind words
I wasn’t there during football season, but I was in Austin in Spring of 2008 and managed to poke around a bit around y’all’s stadium and took some photos (some of which I saw uploaded on Horns blogs to mark the renovation progress.) Anyway, looks like a great stadium and Texas was somewhere I really wanted to go for grad school, but personal circumstances just didn’t allow it. That being said, Tucaloosa’s in need of some new trophies!
The stadium is definitely much nicer than it used to be
It used to be a fairly incoherent structure from an architectural point of view, but the series of renovations over the past 15 years have definitely turned it into one of the top college football venues in the country. I’m still not a fan of the disproportionately large upper deck on the west side — it would be nicer to have a symmetrical upper deck across the whole stadium — but I don’t think there’s much that can be done about that now.

This does raise a question for me
Since the national championship is “mythical,” any school can basically claim a championship on the flimsiest of grounds. And schools can be pretty conservative or liberal when it comes to their claims on championships.
So how does Bama claim a championship for a season in which they lost two games and finished 20th in the AP poll, and a season for which an undefeated Minnesota team is almost universally recognized as national champions?
What’s interesting is that Bama is claiming its championship from some source called the Houlgate System. Two similarly minor polls (Berryman and the Williamson System, whatever the heck those were) named Texas as national champs for that season, but you’ll never see any Texas fan claiming that year (or any other season in which we were ranked #1 by a poll other than the AP or coaches).
Is there some back story there as to why Bama would be claiming a championship on seemingly flimsy grounds that isn’t self-evident from those articles?
(And I type this recognizing full well that Alabama, if the Tide claimed championships as conservative as Texas does, would still have at least seven national championships to our four. And I say “at least” because it becomes pretty murky in the pre-AP days.)
by Hopkins Horn on Dec 7, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions
I asked Cecil Hurt about this a while back...
Cecil is the longtime sports editor of the Tuscaloosa News. He said that the decision to claim the 1941 national championship was made back in the 1980s, and it was basically made so that Alabama had 11. At the time, Notre Dame had 10. That’s why.
"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! So you could safely drop your 1941 claim if you win next month? :)
Saves you from having to change a handle and all.
I doubt it.
Although that one does add fuel to the anti-Alabama fire.

Have to agree to dissagree on TCU, Boise State etc getting robbed.
They are undefeated at 12-0 true enough. The Tide and the Longhorns are both undedeated at 13-0 having had to play a conference championship to get to this point. Not to mention strength of schedule. I don’t understand all the crying from those folks.

The unspoken assumption was that the non-AQ schools would get to play the big boys. They didn’t, which is why a lot are upset.
It may have been...

the problem with that is that the team who plays GT gets screwed
the shoulda sent cinci to play GT cause cinci obviously sucks. had TCU play florida and BSU rematch oregon. but of course that would never happen, would be too fair.
but lets be clear about one thing, cinci clearly sucks and would lose 5-6 games if they played in the SEC.

Cinci absolutely does not suck
Brian Kelly is a terrific coach. While they don’t have the talent that, say, Ole Miss or Auburn has, they have a much better coach and far better team cohesion, and those two things can trump talent.
Dismissing the Big East BCS rep has bitten a lot of teams, including Big 12 and SEC champs in the past, in the arse.

Hello Bama Fans...
Let’s be transparent…recently a friend asked me who I would prefer the Horns play, Bama or Florida…I emphatically wanted Florida for the reasons demonstrated this past Saturday afternoon. Nice shellacking you put on the TT’s. I believed you were a better football team all along and it was proved without a doubt. Bama will be a much more formidable opponent for the Horns and if our offense plays like it did this past weekend, I will be back to tell you congrats. However, Mack and Co. always have their bunch ready for battle with 30 days to prepare. I will not go into the Rose Bowl success of Texas or the overall record. They matter not. Just as we struggled and were outplayed to a certain extent by NU, I watched the miraculous occur with Mt Cody and the 4th quarter blocks against the Vols. Good teams need breaks like that to keep perfect seasons alive. The media will forget about this game in which Tennessee outplayed the Tide in my opinion. But, I will take winning ugly over losing pretty any day of the week. Looking forward to a month of hype, speculation, and “expertise” of how the SEC will dominate an “overrated” Texas from the Big XII. Nebraska would have stymied pretty much anyone this past Saturday. I am thankful we escaped that quagmire. Hope to see some of you in Pasadena as I reside in Mission Viejo, CA.

that as an eight year-old the then starting QB for the horns took me to the stadium and

I would say no
That’s not meant to put down Colt. Colt is probably the second-best QB ever to wear a Texas uniform.
And the team as a whole isn’t overall as good as 2005. The 2005 team was one of the best college teams of my lifetime.
This year’s team is very good, arguably the best in the country — we’ll know for sure in a month — but even in a victory, I don’t think this year’s squad would rank too terribly highly in a discussion of the best teams of the last 10/20/30 years. (Still high, just not near the very top of the list.)
As I brought the "best ever" subject up . . .
. . . is there a consensus “best team ever” for the Tide?

i kid..thats hard to say. Its hard to compare a team like ‘92, to a team that played in the 60’s and 70’s..just different football.

…certainly belongs in the conversation with the 1992 team as one of the best defenses of all time, and it’s definitely one of the best teams we’ve had. they were coming off back to back AP championships and went undefeated, yet somehow didn’t get the title (they gave to ND, surprise!). a lot people say that was our best team and we dont even “claim it as a title anyways”. also the 1978 team was supposedly a juggernaut to the extreme, i can confirm the 92 team was full of beasts. like 7 first round picks on the D alone. but this 09/10 squad might wind up being one for the ages as well. we should only be better next year as we return most everyone on O and more than half of the D. we do lose Ro, Cody, Kareem, and Javier though. those are big losses.

Kareem will return for his senior season
but we lose Washington, Cody, Deaderick, Reamer, McClain (more than likely), Anders, Arenas, Ma. Johnson, Woodall, and backups like C. Rogers, T. King, and A. Sharrieff

Ironic, since that would mean . . .
. . . both our best team and yours had to prove themselves against heavily-favorited defending champs in their bowl games.
Nice point.

I hope we don’t have everyone acting as if ’Bama can win the game without playing it. Ask Tebow how that turned out.

At least...
…until January, the most common answer is the 1979 team, though 1961, 1966 (no official title), and 1992 get a lot of votes. Kleph already mentioned the great teams of the 20s and 30s, but one of my favorites is the 1945 team (also no official title), which was undefeated and had an incredible point differential, as well as an amazing QB named Harry Gilmer.
So, the short answer is…no.

Hi Bama board
I find your site’s name intriguingly familiar.

Simply put:
Our most glaring weakness throughout the season has been consistency. We have, at times, looked like an offensive juggernaut, with innovative playcalling, a dominant offensive line, a quarterback that simply doesn’t make mistakes, and an ability to spread the ball all over the place (check out the number of games where we’ve had 8 or more players catch a pass).
And yet, at times, we’ve looked downright vanilla in the offensive category- predictable playcalls, an unwillingness to throw the ball down the field, and overall pretty average performances from key players.
Our kickoff coverage has been somewhat of an issue- not only letting kicks be returned for touchdowns early in the season, but also allowing good returns and thus good field position on a number of occasions since.
That being said, our defense has been lights out all season, even in their tougher games there hasn’t been much of a dropoff. They hit hard, cover tight, and generally don’t make glaring mistakes.
I have seen Texas have similar issues to the ones we’ve had. I’ve also seen Texas play strong games in much the similar fashion to our strong games. This will be a great matchup, and I am counting the days.

Heh
We could go ’round and ’round about this, but instead of pointing at JUST the Texas vs. Nebraska game, which could only incite Texas fans to point at JUST the Alabama vs. Tennessee game, maybe we should consider the season and matchups in their entireties?
Anyway, thanks for the welcome, Tide fans. Looking forward to a great run-up to the game, and what should be a great game besides. UT is riding a long bowl winning streak, and Mack Brown has really done a good job of shedding the reputation of not winning the big one, so we’ll see how it goes.

my question in reference to that
is how much of that can be attributed to offensive line play?
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
The offensive line played terribly
They played pretty poorly early in the season, then they progressed, and then the unit took an enormous step backwards against Nebraska on Saturday. Of course, I don’t think there’s a line in the nation that wouldn’t have taken an enormous step backwards facing Suh the way he played Saturday. He didn’t so much take advantage of a pedestrian unit as he took his already terrific play up to an amazing level.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 2:43 PM CST up reply actions
Our O-Line
is slow. We’ve had poor games against quick defensive fronts such as Nebraska and OU, but we’ve dominated against the bigger types such as Oklahoma State and Kansas. Our blocking scheme is poorly executed and it doesn’t help when you’re facing 2 out of the top 3 DT’s in College Football (Gerald McCoy and N’Domawhatever Suh, with Cody being the other).
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
I wonder about Cody
He’s a little more nimble than he was last year, at the expense of some bulk, but he’s still primarily a hoggmolly who consumes the line of scrimmage more than a penetrating backfield-wrecker. I guess I’d say that I’m not as concerned about the Cody matchup as I was about Suh due to the style of play, although I should emphasize that I think McClain and Arenas are each better players than any cornhusker not named House of Spears.

Different players and different positions. Cody’s job isn’t to rush the passer. He is, like you said, a person who is suppose to consume o-lineman. So no, you shouldn’t worry about his pass rushing stills, for that you need to look at Anders, McClain, Deaderick, Dareus, etc…

Although I think UT’s under-performing linemen match up better against tackles who are space-eaters than against penetrators.

I think it will be a great BCS Title game...
I think the first one to 20 points wins the BCS Title based on how well each team’s defense has played this season. I feel like we actually have a better chance playing against Alabama vs. Florida considering the style of offense each team runs. We have had our troubles with 4 WR sets (TT) and zone/read (TAMU), which Florida leans towards. Alabama has a great combo of old-fashioned running & throwing with emphasis on the run. I am not saying that means we win, but I am saying that our defense matches up better against that style of play. Either way it will be a great game based on the history of the two schools as well as the remarkable season each has had this year! I am also looking forward to a pre-game celebrity speech by Forrest Gump & Matthew McConaughey! =) And yes…I think Texas wins by a field goal with more than a second on the clock!
Hook ’em!

i like it. but your prediction is all wrong. granted if texas can score 20 points, they’ll be in the game, but they wont. Bama 31 texas 13. and i’m being charitable with that score.

This site is definitely a step up from the futile farmer aggie site or the OU (sucks) site, both of which quickly turn rude and crude.
For the most part, what I’ve seen here has been entertaining. But, then, I don’t have a visceral reaction at the sight of crimson and white, while even the thought of crimson and cream (sucks) makes me puke.
Speaking of puke, I want to point out to the Bamanians that it’s the OTHER UT that wears puke orange uniforms…ours are a burnt orange.
