Heisman viewing/Purdue game
I e-mailed the following message to some folks in the athletic dept. Thoughts?
Just thought I'd pass along a suggestion for Saturday night's big events for the athletic dept. It would be great if the athletic dept could show the Heisman trophy presentation live on the (brand new) jumbotron at Coleman Coliseum at 7pm on Saturday night. If promoted, I think it would get a very positive response from the fans, especially if the football players (and maybe even the SEC trophy?) gathered there as well.
Of course this would serve two purposes for the athletic department: first, it would entice even more fans to come out and hopefully pack the Coliseum for our nationally televised basketball showdown with top-ten ranked Purdue immediately following the presentation at 8pm, and second, it could even be a possible marketing tool for the football team since ESPN (whose cameras will be in the Coliseum already for the game) could show the live fan (and possibly player) reaction in case Ingram wins.
Alternatively, I fear that the Heisman presentation, if not shown in the Coliseum, will keep many fans at home when our basketball team is facing what could possibly be the biggest home game all year. Think about how many fans from Birmingham or elsewhere will choose to stay home and watch, or how many fans in Tuscaloosa will show up late. A sparse crowd for our first nationally televised home game would be embarrassing, not to mention Coach Grant and the team need a big home court advantage for us to upset Purdue.
I hope you will consider this suggestion as a win-win for the University of Alabama and the athletic dept in particular. Please forward this e-mail to the appropriate recipients in case they are not already included.
Thank you, and Roll Tide!

Killing two birds with one stone
so to speak. I would love to see this go down.. As it stands, I’m going to miss seeing the Heisman presentation live, which removes the drama from it since I’ll surely hear who won.
Maybe the athletic dept can swing this despite the limited amount of time.
This is a good idea
Now does the athletic dept. actually read these emails or does an undergrad intern just delete them? I am seriously asking.

Not a bad idea...
…but everyone knows we won’t beat Purdue anyway.
I’ll be watching the presentation at home.
On behalf of the basketball team, thanks for your support

probably not...
…if our fans have that attitude and don’t show up.
No other sport on earth outside of college basketball has more of a statistical home court/field advantage.* A big home crowd truly makes a difference. And I mean I know it’s a rebuilding year with a new coach and all, but we’re 6-2 so far with some solid wins under our belt. This team, with a home court boost, could pull some upsets this year.
I love Bama hoops...
…but in my experience, our fans suuuuucccck…. I’m guessing that it’s because too many tix go to big $ football fans who don’t really give a rip and sit on their hands….

Soccer man, soccer.
Easily the biggest home field advantage in all of sports. Countries with populations less than Pickens County can make it an insanely difficult place to play.
so glad you brought that up
Honestly I meant to add that in my post you responded to. Seriously. That asterisk was intentional and I meant to put the following at the bottom of the post:
*with the exception of international soccer, especially World Cup qualifying games. This is especially true in our region where this year’s qualifying games had a serious home/away discrepancy.
i can't imagine
being close enough to attend and choosing not to.

Great idea.
Unfortunately all the students will be home for Christmas so the BB crowd will be down some anyway.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
I'm hearing a lot of excuses
and not many suggestions for improvements. Our bball fans suck, the game is televised, it’s Christmas holidays, we’ll lose anyways… seriously guys? The OP was trying offer a suggestion for a way to improve Bama’s basketball support and this is what you have to offer?
It’s one thing if you want to point out reasons why this may not be feasible (perhaps there are licensing issues with showing the presentation, or the players shouldn’t have to go through pregame routines with the Heisman presentation playing, etc).
I just expected more from the folks that frequent RBR. With the attitudes that some of you folks have about Bama bball, maybe it is better if you don’t come to the game.
What are you reading?
I see people agreeing that it’s a good idea. The “excuses” are legitimate reasons why there may not be a big crowd. Once the SEC season starts, I think we’ll see some great crowds, and once Grant gets it going, we’ll see great crowds in December.

Maybe I misjudged the tone of
the other comments after I read
…but everyone knows we won’t beat Purdue anyway.
I’ll be watching the presentation at home.
Looking back, the comments following that one certainly don’t have the same tone and I apologize for getting my feathers ruffled. And with that, I bring you this:
I just want to say one thing.
To the fans and everybody in RBR, I’m sorry, extremely sorry.
I promise you one thing, a lot of good will come out of this.
You will never see any fan in the entire country read as hard as I will read the rest of the season, and you will never see someone push reading comprehension as hard as I will push reading comprehension the rest of the season, and you will never see better reading comprehension than I will show the rest of the season.
God bless.
get this email to someone on staff w the football team
they’ll make sure Mal sees this for the good idea that it is..

Okay, I will walk this letter over to the athletic office. I can be there in five minutes.

I'm going to the BB game. I'm taking my 6-year old son. It's his first bama Hoops game to ever attend.
He’s just now gaining some love for the sport. How great will it be if Bama can pull off a win against a top 10 opponent and for my kids first memory of visiting the campus.
Your temper brings dishonor to my happy mooshu palace.
