"(I) appreciate the opportunity to represent our team at the Heisman ceremony. It is a dream come true."
That quote comes directly from Mark Ingram, as relayed per Gentry Estes. I think it's relatively certain at this point that Colt McCoy will win the Heisman, but even so Ingram has had an incredible year and will be awarded accordingly. At the very least, he's been announced as a Heisman finalist, something Saban has never had before, and he will probably finish second in the balloting, putting him higher than any 'Bama player has ever finished.

Naah it's ingrams
The florida game and Suh sealed it for him.
I would highly doubt it...
… Tebow and Spiller will take a hell of a lot more votes away from Ingram than Suh and Gerhart will take away from McCoy.
Heisman Pundit published an article yesterday giving McCoy a 60% chance of winning it to Ingram’s 30% — Gerhart had a 10% chance — and if anyone would know it is him. He was the guy behind several of the USC Heisman campaigns earlier in the decade, and he’s the leading authority on the Internetz regarding the Heisman. And if he gives McCoy 2-1 odds over Ingram on it, I imagine he’s probably right.

My personal prediction
When I heard McCoy keep talking about how he had 25 seconds and realized he had no clue what was going on time-wise and that it was obvious he had been given a great big, early b’day present of 1 extra second in a football game, I concluded Ingram would win. If McCoy gets the Heisman, Miles gets coach of the year.
marycontrary
That's my point...
… the Heisman generally goes to an overrated player who really isn’t all of that good in the first place. When I saw McCoy play against Nebraska, I thought he fit that mold perfectly.
Besides, he’s the star senior quarterback on an undefeated team playing in the national championship game, which oh by the way is also one of college football’s traditional powerhouses. Heisman voters lap that shit up.
Plus, honestly, Ingram is going to face some bias simply because he’s only a sophomore. Tebow is the only underclassmen in history to win the Heisman, and in the past freshman and sophomores — regardless of how well they have played — have clearly had their relative youth held against them once it came time to cast votes.
Don’t get me wrong, I certainly hope Ingram wins it, but I’m not really expecting it.

Besides, the record of Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks come bowl time has been abysmal for many years now. It’s not exactly a vote of confidence with a big game around the corner.

If McCoy wins.....
the whole Texas spin of underdog/underappreciated/just like 2006 will collapse before it even gets off the ground.
Mine as well...
if Ingram does not win then they just need to do away with the Heisman award because it is usually a joke as to who gets it anyway. maybe they will correct the err of there ways and give it to someone who actually deserves it.
The bottom line is that mccoy was a non factor and even almost cost texas the game sat night.
Ingram it is.

i find it hard to fathom that people would vote for mccoy over gerhardt, ingram or suh. mccoy should finish no higher than 4th or 5th in the voting this year. that said he’ll probably win it, and we’ll beat the ever living shit out of texas to further prove that the heisman is a fucking joke. has been for quite some time now (at least since the woodson debacle)

I saw that earlier...
… and didn’t know what to make of it honestly. It’s nice to see Ingram leading there, but it’s hard to get overly excited with such an incredibly small sample size. There are 870 Heisman voters… that poll consists of a sample of 13 voters.
So, again, it’s hard to put much in a poll with that small of a sample size — especially when that sample may be totally random and thus not accurately reflective of the actual Heisman voter pool — particularly when there is such a small margin between the candidates.

I’ve heard and read over the past few days that some voters already cast their ballot so as to not get swayed by the last game of the year.
by chinesedentist on Dec 8, 2009 7:26 AM CST up reply actions
So instead they got swayed by the 2nd-to-the-last game of the year?
What’s the point in removing a single game from a sample? They’d no doubt be swooned by McCoy’s performance against A&M and no doubt unimpressed by Ingram getting stuffed against Auburn.
Tebow tears
and McCoys interception free-for-all definitely helped Ingram. Even by your own reasoning, OTS:
Undefeated team? Check
Playing in the National Championship? Check
College Football’s Tradtional Powerhouses? Check
I have NEVER disagreed with OTS on ANYTHING, and I’m probably being a total Homer, but I think this thing is Ingy’s for the taking!
BTW, one voter that probably votes for Ingram-Tebow. He’s never had a team beat him like Bama did, and as classy as he is, he probably votes Ingram over himself.
Didn't you know that's just OTS's way of playing reverse psychology with the universe.
Got that winning feelin'
I don't necessarily disagree...
… several of those things that I mentioned do apply to Ingram as well as McCoy. Again, though, my thought is that a combination of three things will narrowly give McCoy the edge:
(1) Tebow / Spiller will steal more votes away from Ingram than Sun / Gerhart will steal away from McCoy
(2) The Heisman is biased in favor of upperclassmen over underclassmen, giving an edge to the senior McCoy
(3) The Heisman is generally biased in favor of quarterbacks over tailbacks, again giving an edge to Mccoy
I do think the voting will be close, and I wouldn’t be shocked by any stretch if Ingram won it, but I do think those three factors will probably let McCoy win a close one. I do think that Ingram is the better candidate and that he logically should win the award, but I figured out long ago that the Heisman and logic mix about like oil and water.

For what it is worth
a sports betting site I have visited has Ingram a considerable favorite. If you think McCoy is going to win you could get some good odds right now.
For what it is worth #2, a sophmore has won it the last two years.
Many of the best guys now leave after their junior year, so winning as a soph is now not that big a deal.
But in many ways it comes down to a political thing. Consider these politcal reasons: Bama has never won, Ingram is a rb, (and qb’s have been winning), he is a minority (the last two were not), and even the fact his dad is going to (or is) in jail. All these factors could help him capture votes. The biggest thing McCoy has going for him is that he was beaten out the last few years and some think it is his time.
If I were going to bet (I’m not) I’d bet ingram. But this is too crazy to call.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
The number one factor determining the Heisman winner
is the amount of hype given by ESPN. In fact, they should probably change the official definition of the award to “the player receiving the most hype, deserved or undeserved, from ESPN and other major media outlets”. When I watched all the post game ESPN analysis and bowl show, it seemed Ingram was the pick of the overwhelming majority. Therefore, I believe Ingram will win it. And I just can’t see anyone voting Tebow ahead of Ingram after this week’s games. Maybe Spiller, but I can’t see Tebow getting many first place votes. So, I’m not sure Tebow / Spiller will steal more votes than Suh / Gerhart. I also think more voters will have McCoy outside the top 3 than will have Ingram that low.
The one thing that may give McCoy an advantage is if many turned in their ballots before this week’s games. Ingram would not fare well in that subset.
thats a good point about tebows vote
for as much as us fans like to talk shit about him, the kid has class and showed in his post game remarks. sally bradford on the other hand, she’s voting for mccoy because they are butt buddies.

When I think about McCoy, here's what I get:
In Texas’s game-winning, season-defining drive, the Texas Longhorn offense gained exactly 16 yards. In no way, shape, or form did Texas win the Big 12 Championship. Nebraska gave it away. And if it weren’t for the awesomeness of Ndamakung Suh (e.g. forcing McCoy to throw the ball out of bounds), Colt would have thrown it away himself.
.
With the exception of the final drive of the Auburn game, Mark Ingram was all over every inch that the Tide gained this season. And, more importantly, he showed up when it mattered the most. Let me throw some numbers at you. Not counting FIU, UNT, and UTC, five times this season Greg McElroy threw for fewer than 200 yards. Ingram’s average line during those games?
.
22 car, 161.2 yds, 1 TD
.
Only Tennessee held him to fewer than 140 yards. When his (undefeated) team needed him the most, Ingram came through. That’s why he should win the Heisman. And if it goes to McCoy it is a fucking joke.
Agreed completely...
When his (undefeated) team needed him the most, Ingram came through. That’s why he should win the Heisman. And if it goes to McCoy it is a fucking joke.
Again, I’ll reiterate, Ingram should win the Heisman. He is the most deserving player as a whole, and he has been the most invaluable for his team. He will go on to accomplish far more at the professional level than either McCoy or Tebow. Again, he should win it, and if he doesn’t the Heisman voters have absolutely dropped the ball.
With that said, however, the Heisman voters drop the ball damn near every year, and as a general rule of thumb the "award" is a joke. I hope Ingram wins it, but again the Heisman voters usually screw it up, and if history is any indicator they probably will again this year.

The lack of respect Alabama always gets nationally.

To a large degree, I think so...
… we have never really gotten the amount of respect on the national level that our accomplishments would indicate that we would deserve, and that was true even back in the days of Wade, Thomas, and Bryant. That’s not just paranoia, that’s reality, and that is part of the reason why we’ve never had a Heisman winner.
We’ll see, though. And if it doesn’t change, oh well. You play to win the game, not get sucked off by the national media.

Alabama Never Having a Heisman
I do think that is actually something that does play well with voters. I have heard several voters comment on that, and I think the novelty of that would probably help Ingram.
I would liken it to when Woodson won the Heisman. There was a lot of talk about giving it to a defensive player, and so they did.

1) No way McCoy wins it with all the bad press he got on Sunday.

3) Gerhart had an awesome year but it was on a team whose strength of schedule was 90th.
4) Suh is a beast but nobody heard of him until Saturday.

Stanford
Where did you get Stanford’s strength of schedule from? Sagarin has them 19th, one ahead of Alabama. The PAC-10 has been a really good conference this year, and every team plays 9 conference games so the strength of schedule is really high. Most of the statistical ratings have the PAC-10 as the best conference this year.
The CBS Sportsline
They had Stanford at 90 but now it’s at 64 and Bama is 4th. I saw the Sagarin rating of Stanford at 19 and Bama at 20. That just doesn’t make any sense. Bama has played 3 top 10 teams and 7 top 30 teams in the Sagarin ratings while Stanford has played 1 top 10 team and 4 top 30 teams. Defies logic.
The Pac 10 has been solid but they have a patsy in WSU that’s much worse than Vandy, whom Bama did not play. They lost to Wake Forest, a weak team from a weak conference, and beat San Jose St. and Notre Dame along with most other teams. ASU is not much better. I don’t quite understand the hype about the PAC 10. They had only one non-conference signature win: USC over OSU. They lost every other major confrontation unless you want to call Notre Dame a major confrontation.

Heisman
I will be honest I think it would be really cool for Ingram to win the Heisman trophy. The only problem I have is that I do not think Ingram is the most outstanding player on Alabama’s team. I really feel like McClain has been the most consistent and best performer throughout the year. McClain has made so many plays, and he directs the entire defense.
On the other hand if it does go based on historical perspective, best offensive player on one of the best teams, Ingram is pretty clearly the leader in that regard.
I've got a great t-shirt idea,
If McCoy wins the Heisman, on the front, the t-shirt would read-“At Alabama we don’t win Heismans”-and on the back there would be pictures of Gino Torreta, Tim Tebow, and Colt McCoy, and the caption under the picture would read-“we destroy them.” Just a thought.
I haven't seen a beatin' like that since somebody stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose!
After seeing 5 players get invited to this years presentation....
it really makes me think that Graham Harrel got screwed last year. I understand he definately should not have won it, I just think that he earned the right to come and be present at the ceremony. OTL’s analysis is spot on but I must respectfully disagree with his prediction. All year long, the sports world has guessed that this year could be the year that a running back wins it bc of the lack of outstanding qb play. Ingy led the way for the entire year minus AU. He had a monster SECC game while Colt had a horrible one. There is a 70% chance that Ingy wins and a 30% chance that Colt wins.(Yes the little dancing elephant in my head just calculated those numbers). RTR

In fairness to OTS...
….he was reporting on objective evidence about the Heisman Trophy. At the time it was thought that McCoy would be the leader. There are some updates on this:
It looks like it is going to be an extremely close race, and Ingram has a really good chance to win it.
Heard
about that this morning. I think Ingram has a great chance. Hopefully there aren’t too many voters who voted before the championship games on Saturday. They’d be fools not to honestly.
"A demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." -H. L. Mencken
Logic Defying Reasoning
I heard that there were a lot of voters that voted before Saturday’s games, which makes no sense to me. Supposedly, voters did not want to let one game influence there votes. Yet, they let the previous game where McCoy was awesome against A&M, and Ingram was not good against Auburn totally influence their decision making. If it is supposed to be a season award, wouldn’t you wait for the season to end?
I don’t think it will matter too much for Mark Ingram, but what about someone like Ndamukong Suh. A voter lost out on an opportunity to see quite possibly the most dominating game ever by an interior defensive linemen.
I think lost in all this, is Ingram's statement itself...

I don't think any of missed that
We’re just so spoiled by having players talk like that we expect it.
I don't know if Ingram is the best player in the country...
or even the best player on our team (which is not in anyway a swipe at Ingram; we have a lot of great players), but the “lack of respect” for Alabama issue is no longer valid.
The sports media, for the most part, likes the Tide now, because we are a good story. There is no more anti-southern football bias from most sports pundits. Most bias comes from front-running now. All this talk about Alabama never having won a Heisman will fuel Ingram’s win.
I’ll be extremely happy for Mark if he wins it, and I think he will. He is a class act, and seems like a genuinely good guy.
I really hope Ingram wins
But Suh, IMO, has been the most dominating player all year. He should win with Mark getting a close second, but I think Mark gets it and I’m gonna be so thrilled for him representing Alabama.
