Alabama Dismisses Classes January 6-8
From the link:
The University of Alabama will resume its normal operations on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 as scheduled. However, given the number of students who have to be in Pasadena, Calif. to represent UA on Jan. 7 and the number of faculty, staff and students who want to be there, classes will be dismissed Jan. 6-8. Students should expect additional assignments to make up for the lost class time.

Whay didn’t they ever do this when I was in school? I was a freshman in ’92!
"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his ass quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O.... as a team! That's what people know us as!" - Coach Nick Saban before the 2008 LSU game.

Hmmm…
- January 1st is a national holiday, January 7th isn’t
- January 7th 2010 is on a Thursday
- Tuscaloosa —> NOLA = 290 miles
- Tuscaloosa —> Los Angeles = 2,025 miles
Besides that, can’t think of a single reason. :D
Don't be a dick
They didn’t close down when it snowed 15 inches, or when it was so cold that the pond on campus froze over solid, or when a squirrel got into a transformer and blew out power on half the campus. I was being somewhat facetious, but the policy when I was a student was that the University would hold classes whether students showed up or not. They obviously have gotten away from that.

Hold up now
Don’t be a dick
That’s what the smiley face was for, though since these don’t automatically translate graphically (which is probably a good thing), it might’ve gotten lost in translation.
I meant it all in good fun.
No problem

Why didn't they do that when I was at school
2000-2004. Oh, we sucked.
Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
The smiley softens all sarcastic replies and insults. Everybody knows that...
…asshole. :)

And I am kidding.
I realize in retrospect that might come off as actually calling you an asshole. Not the case, I promise.

George Carlin theory:
“The amount of an asshole a person is is directly proportional to the distance they are away from you at the time you discover this fault.
Someone on TV is REALLY AN ASSHOLE!
Someone in the car next to you is Pretty Much of an Asshole.
A guy standing next to you on line: (whispers) ‘this guy’s a real asshole here’”
theres only 2 kinds of drivers
morons, and assholes. the morons are the ones goin slower than you, and the assholes are anyone going faster than you.
he said it better.
for the next five days there is nothing in my heart but hate. pure, untempered, ice-cold hate. fond memories are for saturday. - Kleph
I subscribe to this theory...
…which makes me wonder, are we all assholes without even knowing it because nobody tells us? And of course, this leads us to the old philosophical question: If an asshole speaks in the forest, and nobody hears, is it still an asshole? I’m going to say yes to both.

I always said
there should be a shrine or memorial for the Squirrel who valiantly gave his life that year. I was so honored to miss class that day.
As a student
I can tell you that about 2/3 of us were not going to show up that week anyway. I think from now on it might be in the school’s best interest to start scheduling the start of the semester after the NCG….
even Auburn?
they don’t ever play in the NC game, so that would make no sense.

As another Student
I’m going to be in Los Angeles from the 2nd to the 9th. Pasadena will never be the same, but there was no way I was going to be in class that week
This is the coolest damn thing I've read all day.
The only time something as monumental and destructive as Alabama fans in Pasadena caused Ole Miss to cancel classes was when they gave us a half-day for Hurricane Katrina.

This was the only thing
keeping me from signing up for the registration list. I don’t care if I go into debt over this, but since I’m a grad student now I simply HAVE to show up for every class. Now I just have to hope I actually get one and figure out who the hell I’m going with if I do.
I just hope as a grad student...
I’m able to still get a ticket…

Me too
I’m only a first year masters student, but I took ridiculously long to get my bachelors after changing majors (started in 2003). I think if I had to go through 2003-2006 Alabama football (and going to the LA-Monroe game in 2007) I should get one.
Hey even students
not going to the game want to be home with their families watching this game. Attendace would have been about 20%.
I’m glad my student daughter will not have to miss class while she is in California.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
Another student here...
And I sure as hell wasn’t going to make it back down here for that week…if only they would have canceled finals…these things are killing me.

You have fun though.
