Great, great news...
Now if we can keep the Dawgs’ enthusiasm curbed, Kirby will be able to take his head coaching gig at the end of next year :)

One hesitates to point this out...
But Coach Saban is 58 years old. Even if he stays in harness, he’s getting to an age where he might want to pass some of the duties on to an assistant. (I know it’s hard to believe in his case.) Smart could easily take on a Muschamp-style “coach in waiting” position.
Dude...
…could be waiting a looooong time….

Congrads coach
i hope we can keep you one more year and then I wish you the best at whatever head coaching job you want in 2011.
Good, he needs to read this about becoming a head coach...
I wrote this a while back concerning current head coaches as former Broyle’s Award Winners since it inception (updates in italics):
David Cutcliffe: The best of this group. Had some great years at Ole Miss and appears to be turning Duke around as quickly as possible. (Had as legitimate of a shot as Duke’s ever had to win the ACC)
Ralph Friedgen: First 3 seasons at Maryland were great (with Vanderlinden’s recruits), but is just over .500 in his last 5 seasons. Great coach to great players, sub par coach to sub par players (e.g. his own recruits). (About a C-hair away from getting canned a week ago. Program going south quickly)
Mark Mangino: Had an amazing 2007 campaign, but the other 6 seasons at Kansas were mediocre or worse. (Got canned Resigned after another less than stellar season)
Randy Shannon: 12-13 in two seasons at the former powerhouse. (Appears to be on the up and up, but still very sporatic)
Gene Chizik: yep… (Nothing to add)
So you see, Kirby? The odds are against you if you try to go be the HC somewhere. Just stay home and rake in the Championships.

point well taken, but I want to believe that he can eventually take over somewhere and be successful. That doesn’t mean you have to jump at the first chance you get. Right now he has the chance to stay under Saban, potentially win a lot of championships, and keep learning how to do things the right way. If he does that, the right opportunity will come.
Mac T, please no! I do not want a coach in waiting. Saban is our coach. He will be our coach until he decides to move on, at which point we should hire the best person available. You don’t want to lock in a coordinator who isn’t happy with his current position and take a chance on messing up the chain of command because you’re afraid he’ll go somewhere else. Maybe if at some point down the road we knew for certain that Saban was going to retire the next year and we knew that we wanted someone on the staff to take over, then I could see it. But not if you’re doing it to keep someone there with no immediate time line for the current coach to leave.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.
