Well maybe the 111th Congress isn't entirely worthless (sorry for getting political).
Topdaddy mentioned earlier today that the house would be discussing a college football playoff today. And the result? The house passed legislation that would attempt to force the NCAA to implement a playoff system...I'm curious to see how this turns out.

No...
…a House subcommittee approved the legislation…the House has yet to vote on it. I just hope that, after they ‘fix’ this ‘problem’, they can do something about the parking at my kid’s pediatrician’s office, since they’re focusing on the really vital issues facing us all….

i want them to figure out
why the McDonalds down the street doesn’t have the Double Cheeseburger on the $ menu! Freakin pisses me off!

That stinks...
…but even though it’s not on the menu, you can still order it (don’t tell Congress)….

But its not a $...
IMO…fixing this issue is way more important than setting up some playoff…its my god given right to buy the Double Cheeseburger at $…

Hear hear!
We have a consittutional right to dollar double cheeseburgers! And I’ll gladly pay an additional $3 in taxes per cheeseburgers as long as congress grants me the right to buy one for that price! Read the peom here:
Now, Smith, an inventor, had specialized
In toys. So people were surprised
When they found that he instead
Of making toys, was baking bread!
The price per loaf, one loaf or many:
The miniscule sum of under one penny!
Everything was fine, he thought?
He reckoned not with fate.
Note the sequence of events
Starting on the date
On which inflation took its toll,
And to a slight extent,
The price on every loaf increased:
It went to one full cent!
To comprehend confusion,
We seek wisdom at its source.
To whom, then did the people turn?
The Intellectuals, of course!
And so it went, one by one,
Denouncing private greed;
Denouncing those who’d profit thus
From other people’s need!
To achieve this end, of course,
We turn to government-and force.
So, if we have to bring Smith do
As indeed we should,
I’m sure you will agree with me,
It’s for the Greater Good!
“So, let me state the present rules,”
The lawyer then went on,
“These very simple guidelines
You can rely upon:
You’re gouging on your prices
If you charge more than the rest.
But it’s unfair competition
If you think you can charge less!
“A second point that we would make,
To help avoid confusion:
Don’t try to charge the same amount,
For that would be collusion!
Now, bread is baked by government.
And as might be expected,
Everything is well controlled—
The public well protected.
True, loaves cost ten dollars each.
But our leaders do their best.
The selling price is half a cent.
Taxes pay the rest!

THIS IS NOT GOOD
Seriously can the government just stay out of sports.
I hope that if it passes the BCS decides to go back to the 4 game system instead of the five – thus eliminating the Utahs, Bosie States, and TCU’s and just match 1 vs. 2 in the 4 rotating bowls. They don’t have to call it a national championship and bowls are free to invite whom they wish and free to partner with each other to rotate the teams etc. Then just let a poll at the end of the season such as AP or Coaches crown a champion of their poll. About 90% of the time they will get it right and if 2 teams are champions, if it is split I have no problem with that.
But this is being generated by the Boise’s and TCU’s etc. so I say give them their own medicine and eliminate them.
A playoff in D-1 would not be good for so many reasons. To begin with we are already up to 14 games and with a playoff it would go to 16. Which is crazy for your average college football player. Plus it would lessen the value of the regular season and distroy the other bowls, which although too numerous still give a lot of fans a fun time at the end of the season.
But my biggest objection is that it would actually lend itself to not crowning the truly best team. For example about 90% of the people would agree that for the entire season Texas and Bama are 1 and 2 and should decide it. But, in a playoff the odds are both would not make it to the end. Instead you get a team like a Ga Tech, that is really hard to prepare for in 1 week- but not so hard in to prepare for in 2 weeks, being able to knock off Alabama because we would only have a week to practice their option, where if we met them in a traditional bowl we would kill them. But then if say UF, which Bama distroyed, got a good draw like playing Cincy withno coach and then playing the Tech- Bama winner they could make it to the championship even though Bama is clearly better.
And besides which national champion since we went to the 5 game BCS could we point to and say “They are not really the best team?” I mean is this system that broken that we are getting bootleg champions every year?
The BB Tourney is great but the games are different. BB lends itself to tournaments, but college football is too much fun with a regular season where every game counts. Every Sat this past year if you were Bama, Tex, UF, TCU, etc, was BIG!! Just leave it be.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

This is completely unconstitutional
We have to remember that the NCAA doesn’t declare a “national championship”. That’s the BCS’s doing. The NCAA only “recognizes” champions from the BCS title game and the AP Poll. So this legislation will do nothing. I want a playoff as much as the next guy, but meaningless, token gestures such as this one get us nowhere.
don't know about unconstitutional, but
from a strictly business stand point it would be very easy to argue that the BCS is violating anti-trust laws.
Just to let you all know...
I was being facetious…I am a firm believer that the too much government intervention is bad for a nation. As Thomas Jefferson said, “My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.” Intervention in College athletics is absurd and entirely a waste of time that should be spent fixing several of the problems facing the country.

Isn't it funny...
…or sad, that, in a ‘democracy’ where most people agree with what you just said, these jokers are still wasting time, money, and energy on this? Let’s burn it down (metaphorically) and start over….

The most telling quote in the article...
Was from the executive director of the BCS, “With all the serious matters facing our country, surely Congress has more important issues than spending taxpayer money to dictate how college football is played.” As for most people agreeing on what I said about government, I would argue that these days it looks more like people believe the government should be providing their needs for them instead of what they really should do: facilitate growth to allow people to provide for themselves.

I mean I wasn't trying to say you were wrong by any means...
Especially here in the south (if that is indeed where your from). However, I do think people are becoming way to dependent on the government here in America. From wellfare to (proposed) health care, the government is spending way too much time trying to help people in bad situations rather than spending time trying to prevent people from being in the bad situations in the first place…Not that I’m saying I am against wellfare or health care reform entirely…I just think it should be done in a different way than it is.
O.K. I’m done with this political talk…this is an Alabama Athletics blog…On a final note, I think we can all agree BCS is imperfect; however, it is not the job for the government to fix it.

Thoreau..
I had to read “Civil Disobedience” in my Political Theory class last semester. And really the guy is more of a proponent of anarchy than any other governing system.

Haha...
Well, having parents born and raised in the south not involved in the ‘60s “free-love” hippies, I feel compelled to say that I’m not a big fan of those crazy 1960s hippies (although, they did have some good music), but those 1860s hippies were legit..

Regardless of what you think of the BCS...
…this is about the worst group of people I could possibly think of to “fix” the problem. BCS critics complain that the title is decided by politics, so now they think they’re going to improve the situation… with politics?
If you’ve watched the hearings on this bill, you’d know that these politicians are completely clueless. How could you possibly think that these people would do a good job if they don’t even know that the Cotton Bowl is not part of the BCS (this from a TEXAS Congressman!), and think they’re talking with the “Athletic Coast Conference” and the “West Mountain Conference”? (One example: http://articles.latimes.com/2009/may/02/sports/sp-dufresne-bcs2 ) Would you hire a mechanic who didn’t know what a transmission was? They ask the dumbest possible questions and posture in front of the TV cameras so we all know how much they care. Because, you know, they got nothin’ else better to do up there.
