Alabama Hockey: It Exists!

Not sure how many of you know this, but Alabama has a hockey team, and they are apparently pretty good. We were contacted by a representative of the team about throwing some link their way, and I have to say I'm fairly impressed with what they've managed in a football crazy state at a football crazy program with a sport that no one plays here. Finishing the season at 19-5, they are currently ranked #8 in the ACHA South and headed to regionals at the Atlanta Ice Forum this weekend. What's that you say? Can't make it to Atlanta during Valentine's weekend for hockey? Well you'll have plenty of opportunity to see the Frozen Tide at the Pelham Civic Complex for the Southeastern Hockey Conference Championship. It's from Feb 27 - March 1, and you can download their press release/info packet here (word .doc, 92kb).

laugh, but I actually played on an inline tournament team in high school. We played many of our tournaments in Atlanta at that very Ice Forum if I remember correctly. They have 2 ice rinks and an inline rink, full Sport Court with boards. A lot of the college’s club teams play there. I remember going to the ice rinks and sitting in the bleachers watching Ga. Tech play. Those guys were actually pretty good. Ahhh… memories.

Do you know how tickled I am?
I love hockey! One of the unfortunate things about growing up in the NE corner of Alabama was the lack of hockey. There were UA-H games, but otherwise, pretty barren.

UAH
was pretty good last I checked. They’ve moved up from a club team to D-II and now D-I in only a few years. Pretty impressive really. They won D-II national championship in ’96 & ’98 before moving up to D-I in ’99 due to the NCAA eliminating D-II hockey.

This season has been a struggle for a Chargers...
…but two years ago they managed to make the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time (losing in double overtime to No. 1 Notre Dame).

I knew
and i went to 2 games last season, but i have only been to one thus far this season. it’s only five bucks to get in…you can’t beat that. I definitely get some weird looks when wearing my bama hockey shirt hahaha

Ok, I literally just searched for this jersey. I need THAT jersey! I had no luck doing a quick internet scan….but if anyone can find where I can buy one of these please post a link. I will give them my wallet and let them tell me how much I deserve to get back. What a jersey! :)

I actually saw them a couple of weeks ago practicing. My girlfriend drug me to the Pelham civic center to go skating and there were getting ready to practice after the rink closed. It really freaked me out to see Bama Hockey shirts all over the place.

RUGBY
Ice Hockey is a new club at the University, but when I was attending, I joined the Alabama Rugby Team. It was establised in 1973 but it never gets the publicity as it should. Who wouldn’t like to see guys smashing and hitting each other without pads. Great to watch!

I went to highschool with that dude in the pic
He played for UAH, which is a well respected 1AA team. I dont think he’s the only one w/ previous ligitiamite college experience on the Bama team. These guys can play. I am going to bust his balls about this cute lil pic w/ Big Al tho.

…reminds me of two things: my favorite Rodney Dangerfield quote, “I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out,” and one of the funniest movies ever made, Slap Shot. I heart Hansons.
