What Has Scheduling Games in ATL Done for Recruiting?
ed.- bumped from the fanposts.
This is partly for my own bookkeeping, and partly to show what Saban scheduling these big games has done thus far. Talk about thinking outside the box, using OOC games for recruiting purposes is one of the best ideas I've heard of. Now, these are a list of players that I believe (someone prove me wrong if need be) chose Bama, or came close to doing so, simply because of Saban's desire to play big OOC games in ATL:
Michael Bowman; 4 star WR; Rossville, GA - Rossville isn't incredibly close to ATL, however, it is in GA and he did commit 2 weeks after the Clemson game. Makes sense.
Jonathan Atchison; 3 star LB; Atlanta, GA - He committed mid-December,and I think that he, much like the other guys, liked the prospect of being able to play in front of a hometown crowd against VT in Atlanta and hopefully other big games throughout his college career at that venue.
Darius McKeller; 3 star OL; Jonesboro, GA - Committed prior to the '08 season, but same goes with him as did Atchison, IMO.
Chance Warmack; 3 star OL; Atlanta, GA - Same as above.
Kellen Williams; 3 star OL; Snellville, GA - Same as above.
Darren Myles; 4 star DB; Atlanta, GA - Obviously didn't commit to Bama, but we were up front down the backstretch, and even his dad thought he was going to Bama until he actually signed.
Branden Smith; 5 star DB; Atlanta, GA - Also didn't commit to Bama, but we had just as good of a chance, if not better, than most through December.
I mention Myles and Smith because none of our recent coaching staffs would have gotten a second look from these guys, and we almost had Myles. No sour grapes here, just pointing out that kids like them were not options in the past 20 years until now.
I really think this is just the tip of the iceburg as far as what these games and a little extra recruiting in this area is going to do to expand Bama's recruiting area. There's a ton of talent here, and it appears that Saban is staking his claim to just as much of this area as Richt and Meyer. This is why Saban is...
Please add if you have additional info, or if you think I'm full of it, and you're not a troll, let me know why.

No doubt
playing in ATL helps recruit the area and it is a talent rich area. I don’t think we will have a nuetral field out of conference game in 2010 and who knows after that but FSU, Clemson, and Va Tech were good scheduling.
I still would like to play Texas in the New Orleans Dome someday and who knows maybe we can get Oklahoma to play us in Memphis- that would be huge for recruiting the forbidden city.
We need to schedule a game...
…here. I don’t care who it’s against. It would be one cool road trip!!!

how about a sudo-home and home
with UT or A&M – there’s some history with both of those programs (playing the other game at the Superdome or the Georgia Dome). Or we could meet a West Coast team there.

It basically looks like an updated version...
…of Reliant Stadium in Houston…which is also super awesome. One of the coolest stadiums I’ve been too. Saw the USA play Mexico there in soccer a few years back.
We may still get Myles.
Good writeup, thanks

Actually, I'm still uncertain about Myles.
I know there was some rumblings yesterday that he might back out of his commitment, but I’m not sure where that stands now. OTS would know better than I.

What are the rules...
…about backing out of a LOI? Do the recruits have a certain time frame that they can do that? Are they penalized in some way?

Other than being labeled...
a primadonna who is scared of competition, I don’t think there is a penalty, I just think it’s the same process as getting out of a scholarship. You have to be released with conditions, which will probably be that Mr. Myles cannot go to any school that plays TN in the next 2 years or so.
I know there’s a good possibility that Myles got lied to about his situation, but it is what it is now, so deal with it and play the game. If he came to Bama, he’s got the same, if not better competition at DB in Dre, so it would seem his situation would not change, other than the fact he’d then be playing for a winner.

I think its a very good thing...
at the same time its good for everyone involved. CNS knows what he is doin, so have no fear that the talent will come to Bama. 2 classes in a row and high caliber talent…not to mention well rounded individuals as far as i can tell. Coach has the best interest of the team and University in mind. As far as Myles is concerned…young people make mistakes…I know I have before, so you learn from them and move on. I think thats what all of us do. RTR!

It will not happen
First off, the rumors came from LSU and Alabama fan sites; I am just guessing, but probably not the most reliable sources on what a kid from Georgia, who is going to UT is doing. Also, the rumor really does not make much sense. The idea was that Myles was promised to be the only safety that UT was recruiting.
First off, it requires everyone to believe that Jackson will in fact not play CB in college, a position that most teams recruited him for, Alabama a notable exception. I suppose that is not to big of a stretch; Jackson does have the size to grow into a safety. That would still only be one other safety that was recruited that is going to the same school.
Next, you have the safety position at UT. UT is fortunate to have arguablly the best combination of safetys in the nation in Berry and Morely; both of which will be gone next season, and only leaving a bunch of unproven underclassmen beneath them. Safety is an area that is severely lacking in depth. Again, it makes sense that Myles would work there. He is in a good situation to see playing time this year at UT, something that probably would not happen at Alabama this year, or at worse to compete for a starting job next year.
Finally, you have the fact that he signed a letter of intent to go to UT. If you sign a letter of intent, it is a one year contract between the university and the student. He would in all probability have to attend the university for at least the first year before he could think about transferring. The school at that point could put restrictions on what school he could attend, here is guessing that Alabama and LSU would be on that list. He of course, loses a year of eligibility as well.
I still do not think there is anything to these rumors, and will not believe it till it comes from a more credible source. His father is a well known high school coach in Georgia who knows how the game is played, and certainly has let his son know everything.

Don't forget....
…we’ve also got an away game at Tulane coming up in the next few years as well as an away game at Duke. Don’t think we won’t be using those to woo recruits from Louisiana, Texas and the mid-Atlantic.
I'm ready...
…for a little home and home with USC and/or UCLA.
