Rebel Land, Alabam: The Dexateens & Archibalds
via c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com
Meant to post this a few days ago. For those about to rock, or who might consider rocking if appropriately engaged, I recently wrote about a couple bands with deep T-Town connections: The Dexateens and The Archibalds (who actually live near me in Austin, TX). Talked a bit about The Chukker (RIP) and referenced "40-39 in The Swamp." For anyone interested in the electric guitar, Exile On Main Street, The Gourds, barbecue, Crimson Tide football (duh), time machines, and plates of shrimp.

Ahh. The Chukker
What a great bar. I have some great pieces of memories from that place. Not the least of which was somehow getting the number from one of the chicks in Little Red Rocket.
I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

Yea! Chukker!
That place (the old chukker, pre-Ludovic) is where my band played its first gigs. Many many stumbling nights out of there and equally as many mornings waking up, saying “where the hell am I?”

Aight...
…pantsfucious, I may have taken one of your American Studies classes in the 90s. I definitely like the quote from Repo Man, which I just rewatched a couple of weeks ago.
TOD: Was her name Maria?
SitP: Que es el ‘band’ of which you speak? I was there pre- and post-Ludovic.

LLR
NLS. I can’t remember. She was played on stage right (left side from the audience point of view). This was easily 15 years ago now, the number was written on the back of a flier torn from the wall near the bar. Also, i pussed out and never called it.
They sure did rock the house though.
Shall we go even further Off-topic and naming bands we loved while in T-town. I’ll start with Mindseye, I used to love those guys.

I was a fan...
…of Club Wig, and I also remember bands like the Plaid Camels, the Hitchcocks, the Storm Orphans, Bag of Agony, Eric Landis, Bentley Tock, the D.T.s, Follow For Now, Conspiracy-A-Go-Go, Southern Culture On The Skids, the Penetrators, Kilgore Trout, and the White Animals. Alex Chilton used to come through a good bit, and you could go see Johnny Shines — the man who played with Robert Johnson the night he died — for free at Egan’s all the time. R.E.M. played the Chukker, Red Hot Chili Peppers played the Getaway, and Phish played the Varsity all before getting too big for those venues. Dave Matthews used to play at the Ivory Tusk, too. I remember seeing Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic at the Varsity.
I wasn’t a fan of each and every one of these bands, but I didn’t hate any of them, and they all contributed in their own way to making T’town a great music town for a while. I’m sure I’m leaving out a lot, but this already seems too long, so I’ll stop there…for now.

I remember
10,000 maniacs; REM; Panic and Mojo Nixon
As for locals, Storm Orphans and Bag of Agony…how could I have forgotten that. Oh, and the Cheeseburger guys. And Mindseye

JD and The Jammers
Anybody remember JD? I started playing the harmonica because of him and remember great nights throwing chairs in the upstairs of The Varsity— then getting a steamed sandwich thru the window of Solomon’s all the while MagicMan would be balancing 100lb picnic tables on his face scaring all the sorority girls— Ah the memories—- Anybody with me?
Anybody?

…there is no way we wouldn’t at least recognize each other if we met face to face. I would bet good money I saw you throwing chairs at the Varsity at least once. Those sandwiches were addictive. The Magic Man is still doing his thing. And I puked on J.D. the night I turned 21. At least thats what I’m told.

wow…. y’all got me reminiscing about good times on the strip. i paid my time ‘98-’00. i have fond memories of the “egg roll lady” popping in the booth/ pounder’s/ gallette’s and selling $1 egg rolls at some magic time of night. anybody remember the wacked out guy that used to sell balloons on the corner next to the booth on the weekends? there was a rumor going around that those balloons had “gas” in them. nope. just old man breath. getting tanked at pepito’s was always a great way to spend tuesday’s. any of y’all remember highly kind, hanover pass, organic logic, electric monkeywrench? i truly miss 4th and 23rd… great way to spend a saturday night. i worked at mellow mushroom for the first 8 months it was open and the globe for about 10 months after that. wow. those were good times

I'm glad...
…Pepito’s is still going. It saddens me to walk down the Strip from there to Egan’s and not see Chang’s, Vinyl Solution, the Ivory Tusk, Cycle Path, or International Deli. Overall, the Strip and the campus as a whole look nicer than they did then, but some fine establishments have disappeared. The Varsity/Solomon’s/End Zone is now a pile of rubble on a semi-vacant lot. And I would love to eat a Cheerleader or have a Kwickie on the Strip again. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, that’s not what it sounds like, but it was bad (not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good).

man i remember most of these guys.
Its kinda sad now on the strip,by the time i got of age the international deli was Hales and the tusk had closed. I did see son volt at the varsity though.I miss the booth.I played in a band called Chinese Dentist and playing there on a Friday before a game was huge.I still work at egans and we a lot of original bands still some are great and others not so much.We did have Unknown Hinson (voice of Squidbillies) not to long ago.The egg roll lady has morphed into the flower lady. Magic man is banned from most bars now for burning people with his cigarettes. I always wondered what he did when he wasn’t magic man and then a guy at egans told me he worked with him at the Cap’n D’s on Macfarland.I also heard balloon man had nitro balloons.Anybody remember Pain the did the jabber jaws theme for cartoon network.

Sorry to lump these guys together...
…but do Scoop and Cowboy still hang out at Egan’s?
by NiceLittleSaturday on Feb 20, 2009 10:04 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
scoop doesn’t drink anymore, and if its possible cowboy is even harder to understand.i just learned the other day that cowboys real name is jake.I never would have guessed that.I had my wedding at scoops house out past cottondale. Taylor hollingsworth and sweetdog (the dexateens first drummer played) Scoop still comes in and is as far out as ever.

dude I know you. Won't speak your real name here though but I'm the guy that
always made you do your Stabler impersonation at Egan’s!
I remember Pain. I played in band with 2 of their former members. I’ll never forget reading a free music newspaper in Athens, GA , it described Pain as “weird Tuscaloosa music”. LOL.

when
during football games?, thats when i channel my inner stabler too many half shots with the patrons. When do you normally come in? I work one night a month and football saturdays now. Its to much fun and money to not.I mean get paid to be in the thick of the shit and watch football and play the fight song after each touchdown.

Yes mostly during games. I was a regular at Egan's until
2 years ago when I moved to Loozeyanner. I still come by Egan’s when I’m in town though. You know me. Many times I have rolled the dice with you and Ash. I usually lost. Next time I see you there I’ll mention this conversation.

how 'bout.... are you ready?
Follow For Now! Man those guys rocked! How they never became bigger than sliced bread is beyond me.
And speaking of KwickSnak, man I swear sometimes I have dreams about those cheese tots. Those things were awesome after spending several hours on the strip drinking cheap draft beer.

I became...
…a Follow For Now fan the first time I heard them cover Public Enemy’s ‘She Watch Channel Zero’. I can still hear their drummer singing, “Shewatchshewatchshewatchshewatchshewatchshewatch…”.

Pain was a cool band. Never got to see them live though. Anybody remember the band gran torino. They put on a good show. How about the roast beef sandwhich from tut’s? The balloon man was hit or miss. Sometimes he had the gas but sometimes not.

Tut's...
…sandwiches and calzones were excellent, but my favorite item they had was the side salad with all the cheese and creamy dressing. I tell my doctor about these things so he can understand what he’s seeing.

NiceLittleSaturday...
In a Katrina follow-up that Brian Williams did on NBC, they were handing over the keys to the first recovery house at the Musicians Village. The shot starts placing keys in a black man’s hand that looked like it had lillypads for fingers— I shouted “those are JD’s hands” and sure enough JD got the first House.
Whenever he would flop in Ttown, he often would go buy a whole chicken and then look for a house to cook it in. Many times that was with one of our crew.
He’s playing JazzFest this year on May 3rd I think-hoping to catch him.
