The RBR Friday Random Ten's Where You Find It...
| ...not just where you bump and grind it... |
Y'all know how to play: Put your iPod/Zune/whatever on shuffle and list the first ten songs that come up. No cheating to make yours look cooler, which is why I linked to I'm Breathless for Vogue instead of the more understandably owned The Immaculate Collection. Yes, I like Madonna so much that I actually purchased the Dick Tracy soundtrack. Also, just ignore #10. That's a typo or something.
- Madonna - Vogue
- The Lemonheads - I am a Rabbit
- Ralph Stanley - I'll Remember You Love In My Prayers
- Johnny Cash - Luther Played the Boogie
- Alan Parker/Alan Hawkshaw - Move, Move, Move
- Muddy Waters - Long Distance Call
- Bruce Springsteen - Loose Change
- Hank Williams - Your Cheatin' Heart
- Wilco - Poor Places
- Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (Wang Chung Tonight)

Hey I know...
I was hoping to be a little more varied, but I don’t argue with Pandora. It felt I needed more country than Grunge today

Cave...
…actually wrongly attributes the song to Thunders in his song.
FWIW the song also references Karl Marx, Paul Gauguin, Vladimir Nabokov and St. John of the Cross.
thunders made it famous but it’s pretty much recognized that dee dee wrote it now. (i actually got to interview dee dee at one point and asked him this point blank)
st. john of the cross. heh, gotta love those catholic mystics. after the dubose/franchone/price/shula epoch we all can relate to the old “dark night of the soul.”
The Johnny Thunders...
…version is the first one I got my hands on back in the 80s, and maybe for that reason it’s still my favorite. I was young, so it was a long time before I knew what that song was about. Needless to say, when I found out, I felt a little stupid for not figuring it out on my own.

I can understand some of them....
…but you’ve never heard of Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Gogol Bordello, System of a Down or Thievery Corporation? They’re all very different styles of music and they can all easily sell out venues that hold thousands.
Thank you!
For giving me Gorgol Bordello and Starflyer 59!
A man becomes “polished” over here at Roll ’Bama Roll! Straight up, no kidding.
Nico, bless you son.

i always wondered at what point ron wood decided he wasn’t getting laid enough being in the rolling stones and he’d do better to join a band with rod stewart?
It was the other way around...
Ron Wood was with The Faces first. He later joined the Stones after Mick Taylor left the band. Though getting laid more may well have been his primary motivation for the switch.
R 10

What do you think of his music?
I’m very curious, because it took a while for me to warm up to his “fusion” (If Stravinsky should happen to meet up with James Brown in Amsterdam and they smoke a joint? – Throw in some text/lyrics quoting from certain technical principles of visual mathematic? – And voila’ , you have Andriessen.
His source work and influences come from a vast chasm of knowledge and genius. It’s almost too deep for me. Abstract, for lack of a better word. (He’s the Ornette Coleman of modern classical composition, and I’m barely hanging on)
You never emailed me back? Hope things are going well, Nico- I know you’re a very very busy guy. (School going okay?)

Oh man...
…forgot about the email. So sorry, I will fix that NOW.
Re: Andriessen – I didn’t seek out what I had, it came on discs of other composers that I was checking out. It’s two short pieces of around 5-10 mins. each. Any recs on what to check out further?
I haven't checked my email just yet. . .
. . .as I just got in. RBR is usually THE FIRST place I go to! (nope, my tongue is definitely not in cheek. it’s in my mouth actually) A.N.Y.W.A.Z.E. . . . .
Louis Andriessen has copious works. I started out with his operas and “sorta spoken word” stuff, and that stuff is just bananas. I’d suggest his operas to get really started with this cat. He has such a profound sense of space and function, that I find his technical work in orchestral composition to be at the warning track of left field. For me. I can be obtuse at times. (I know, I’m really trying to work on that)
You know what? I’ll burn some of his stuff for you. Majority of his recorded works are on Nonesuch Records (dead giveaway that he’s not your garden variety composer. London Records, Polygram, EMI are the usual labels du jour for the critically acclaimed and coveted, in that regard). I don’t have it myself (and I will one day though) but I’ve heard it many times- is Andriessen’s work with Peter Greenaway in “M is for Man, Music, and Mozart” – it’s a real gem. So is “Odysseus’ Women”! These two are purely sublime, and very inviting.
I’d say, if I had to, that (conservatively) only about 60% of Andriessen’s work is “approachable”. The rest are sure head twisters and mind convulsions! (Mall Music in Hades for sure)

Being on Nonesuch...
…is a plus for me: Reich, Glass, Adams, Kronos Quartet, etc. It’s like a (slightly) tamer version of ECM, where the super weirdness goes down.
