Biggest Impact

With the clas we just signed I'm interested in hearing everyone's take on which of the incoming freshman will have the biggest impact and why.

Star-divide

I'm really interested in seeing how big DJ Fluker comes along.  Can he step in at LT and fill Andre's shoes?  It'll be intersting to see how Coach Pendry is able to develop him.

I'm concerned with Dre's injury.  If he heals quickly and is ready to go I think he can be a game changer.

Your thoughts?

Fluker

because LT is so important and I just don’t think we have anyone at Bama right now that will be able to do the job (see Sugar Bowl.)

I also think Richardson could become that go to guy we need at RB. You can never know about backs, but there is chance he could be an Emmit Smith type (same high school.) He has power and speed. I think he could be able to be a break away threat and get the really long runs. Coffee, surprisingly, got a few of them this year and the break away runs can really make a big difference. But both power and speed are rare. Shaun Alexander had both and we road him to our last SEC title. But I think TR might be faster than Shaun.

Ditto

When you find that special LT, he is penciled in as the man for three years, cuz you’re not keeping him for four.

Trent Richardson =

Adrian Peterson

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

That is...

one bold statement. I hope you’re right.

No

kidding, Peterson rushed for like 1800+ yards as a freshman and was runner up in Heisman voting. I’ll french kiss a pig if Richardson duplicates that.

Trent is definite

But I think Carpenter will start at right guard and if Fluker’s feet get him beat in practice against the rush then maybe left tackle.
A rusher like Sentimore or Stinson at Jack could make an impact although I hope Upshaw blooms into that role.
One of the LB (Patrick or Johnson)could move Hightower or McClain to a DE position(more likely Hightower since he may add some pounds and really not be able to cover a TE on passes.

Without a doubt

The man who has to be your biggest impact player will be Fluker. If Fluker isn’t your biggest impact player then Richardson has no chance at it and your quarterback is doomed. This next season might rest on the shoulders of DJ Fluker.

by Mattco on Feb 7, 2009 12:05 PM CST reply actions

I hope not

Utah game was a fluke. Bama wanted to be in Miami and Utah wanted to be in New Orleans plus Utah’s DE will be a 1st day draft pick despite his size. Bama OL was put into a spot were they played different positions and were out of sink. Plus JPW couldn’t feel a mosquito if it bit him on the ass. I love the guy but his awareness is horrible. Literally a step up here a step back there and the whole ball game is different. Part of being a QB is defining your own pocket. Fluker could be great but our entire season resting on him is a stretch. We have some good depth at OL and with a year under the belts working together they will be dominate once again.

I do not

think Fluker will be our impact player. For one, Andre Smiths do not come around very often and to think that one team lands two back to back is a stetch. Fluker has played one yr of OT in his entire HS career he will struggle to learn the pos. I think either Carpenter or an existing player will man the LT spot. I think if Nico or another LB can come in and take over for Hightower and move hightower to Jack then you have to go with the LB that frees up DH. If no one can fill in for hightower then maybe Stinson can come in and be our Jack. Either way the Tide has to get more pressure on the opposing QBs.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

My thoughts on the not so obvious

Kenny Bell will be the UA version of Demps and will return Kick Offs and take Arenas duties at PR once he’s gone. The man is lighting and will be in on screens, slants, direct snaps, etc…….
Stinson will be a major piece in our DE rush next year
Rod Woodson will break bones next year
Carpenter will be a starter on the OL
If Gibson, Hanks, Stover don’t get it together then Bowman/Kelly will take up the slack. Bowman will get some jump balls for TD’s.
Watch out with Moore on OL or maybe depth at NT or 3T He’s fast fast fast for his size.

Obviously Trent will be part of the running attack
Fluker doesn’t have fast feet so LT at NCAA level might be a little transition. I don’t think he walks on and gets the spot. We got options to decipher

Good thoughts...

that what I was looking for. I’m curious to see what Pendry is able to do with Fluker. I’ve heard very mixed reviews on Pendrys coaching abilities so I think this will be a good measuring stick. You think Bell has a chance of taking any returns away from Arenas this year?

by sixfoot7 on Feb 8, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Not really. Arenas is the man but Kenny will be it afterwards.

I don’t think Julio returns kickoffs this year. I think Kenny takes that duty off Julio’s shoulders. I also think that Smelly will be big next year.

B. Scott might be in the mix with safety positions next year.

Fluker could easily get the job but I don’t think he’s got it in the bag. If Fluker isn’t starting next year than Pendry reviews might be solidified but after this past year you can’t really say anything to the man.

My pick

would be Quinton Dial. He will make an impact as a DT, but he will allow our Mt. Cody and the speed rushers more freedom to wreak havoc among the offenses we will face. As we all know, defense wins championships. With the addition of all the quick LB’s and lockdown corners this recruiting season, we will rotate those guys in and out to wear out offenses.

When you're a front runner, you don't have to look at no ugly behinds.

by Alabama88 on Feb 8, 2009 6:48 PM CST reply actions

I hope

Only our OL recruits HAVE to make an immediate impact. HOPEfully the guys we signed over the previous two classes can hold the fort down and let us RS some of these guys. We had a lot of freshman playing ST’s last year and im personally ready to see them flurish in starting roles. Especially on the defensive side.

Trent needs to play immediatly. We might only get 3 years with him and i don’t want to see one waisted on a RS.

Dre, Nico, and Tana will help strengthen our LB and DB core but again dont forget about the guys we signed last year like Jarell Harris, Upshaw, Barron, and Lawrence. Those guys will be the ones HOPEfully making an immediate impact.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

by bammer on Feb 9, 2009 2:11 PM CST reply actions

I'm

with you, I want to see some of the guys like Barron, Lawrence and Harris play this year. Not that I wouldn’t be stoked to see Dre, Nico or Tana work their way on to the field.
