Hall and Fanney Suspended

Third Saturday in Blogtober reports that Prince Hall and Brandon Fanney have been suspended for violation of team rules.  Of course Hall had similar trouble last year that led, I believe, to a three game suspension.  Since it seems that Saban is moving folks around in the defensive backfield, it will be interesting to see how the loss of Hall and especially Fanney at the Jack position affects this.

Hall will likely be done, as he just doesn't seem to click with Saban, but let's hope that Fanney's suspension is only temporary and he can compete for Jack.

Hall

suspended… hmmm, what else is new? Maybe Saban is trying to begin this season step for step the way he did 2008. In all seriousness, its a shame that Hall is going to end up a major bust. That kid has great talent.

Hall

I was all for giving Hall a second chance, but even I think it is time to leave the team. He cannot seem to stay out of trouble once the offseason starts. He was a decent player, and I think this is his last year anyways, but I think it is time for him to go.

Hall gone just means

one more roster spot on the 85 and more playing time for Nico Johnson who will be better than Prince Hall anyway.

Hall fit good with Shula, but not so good with Saban. I sure hope he some how gets his degree because otherwise I suspect we will see him in jail one day.

do we know what the suspension is for? Jail?

by bamainexile on Mar 13, 2009 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I

doubt jail is the reason. He was suspended last year for being out of shape and just generally not following team rules. I have a feeling its something similar this time too.

I doubt he'll wind up in jail....

….he seems like he just doesn’t have the proper work ethic to be on a Saban coached team.

by Todd on Mar 13, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Not trying to speak bad on him

but if he doesn’t get a degree I just can’t see him playing pro ball and I can see him working construction etc.

I also think he is used to being a big deal so he will need money…if you can’t earn it you got to get it from somewhere which means you get it illegally. In my town about 1/2 of the minority guys that either don’t graduate form college or go in the military end up doing some jail time. That is not a prejudical statement, that is reality. What opportunites are there for minority kid with no skills or education?

Not much but

in my small town there are bunch of white kids with no real skill that fall in a good old boy network. Their dad or their uncle owns a business or a family farm or one of their high school buds owns something and so they get a good paying job they aren’t really qualified for because it is more about who you know than what you know. Heck, we got a guy running the cash register at the country club making 35k mainly because his uncle is the sherrif.

The black kids and the Hispanic kids—where I Iive—just don’t have that kid of network. They have to make it on their own because no one is going to give them anything. Which is why those kids try so hard to get an athletic scholarship and why most that do get a scholarship try really hard to do the right thing and keep their scholarship because it does represent a way out for them. But when a kid blows it like Prince Hall then you just hope he somehow graduates because a lot of those kids if they don’t graduate are going right back to a bad situation.

Now I don’t know Hall, don’t know the neighborhood he came from, or what his family has. But…if he doesn’t graduate and he doesn’t get a pro contract I just think his options are not going to be so good and the stats would tell us he could end up in trouble.

how does missing the point equate to a "boom-roast"?

because what 5026 said was something that i dont think many so-called “conservatives” can actually admit in public. racism exists in america, particularly in the deep south. people from minority backgrounds do not have nearly the same opportunities available to themselves as whites do. the reasons that this situation exists are up for debate, i’d argue that the moral implications of it, would also be eagerly debated by most self labeled “conservatives” as well.

but none the less, anyone who is rational and honest will acknowledge racism is pervasive in america and that job and educational opportunities are not granted to those who seek them on a merit basis. thats an idea that I hinted would not be readily received in this forum. and the first response to that hint i made, was either A: based on a mis understanding of my post and/or the original post i replied to, or B: a “straw man” attempt to detract from the discussion by falsely ascribing items/values to the idea that is being argued against.

hence 5026 essentially says, “you know it’s hard to get a job if your black due to racism”, and i say, “thats true, be careful for backlash” and then Todd essentially says “see republicans just work harder.”…. either todd doesn’t get the point, is engaged in cognitive dissonace, or is intentionally (and shrewdly) attempting to re-frame the debate….regardless, our frank discussion about race in America has gone completely off the tracks, something that one would assume, satisfies the agenda of “conservatives”….

Uh, wow

Your complete and total patronizing of 5026, Todd, and myself shows me that you have no real experience in dealing with these issues other than, say, listening to Radio America or jumping on board the Obama train.

Look, no one is denying racism exists. And I will damn near bet the bank that I not only have more experience dealing with culturally diverse issues than you but have experience in dealing with flat out good ole boy ignorance and racism face to face.

But continue to blame the troubles on the right wingers and the GOP. Hey, newsflash – Bush was pretty liberal. Other than his occassional shout out via policy to the Christian Right, they guy was nearly as left as his Dad. GOP doesn’t always equal true conservatism. But let’s see where the next 4 years of drifting closer to Socialism and big government takes us.

Another point – I love how you started off with the saracasm towards “Boom Roasted” (to which you probably don’t even get the reference), go on a rant about how Todd missed the racism point (which, actually, you missed Todd’s point, which encompassed more than just racism BTW), and you, my friend, go waaaay off topic to attack conservatism. I find irony in humor at your hypocricy ;)

I

have certainly seen first hand the ‘good ole boy’ phenomenon in effect. Who you know can make a difference in the short term. However, I think working hard, constantly trying to improve yourself and grow is the best long term strategy. I’m not exactly the most outgoing person in the world and I don’t have good networking skills. I’m sure that has hurt me on the job front but I’ve never been told I wasn’t qualified or capable enough. Someone usually just beat me to it because they knew about the opportunity before anyone else did due to their connections. I do know that the good jobs I have gotten are due to the fact that I demonstrated a certain amount of competency and knowledge of the industry I’m in. And I take some comfort in that. I know I’m not a good networker, so I try to make up for that by knowing more than the next guy or gal. So far that has served me well. My wife on the other hand is a great networker. She is outgoing and is liked by everyone she comes into contact with. She got her job she has now through a contact she made and its the best job she’s ever had up to this point. Both in pay and in responsibility. But she also has a strong work ethic so its not as if she doesn’t deserve to be where she is. When she finishes her degree she’ll be a force to be reckoned with and I will be there to ride her coat tails to the top. Yes sir marriage is great.

Or the left wing reaction

Give hand outs to everyone who asks, allow people to sit on welfare all their lives, give big government total control.

Come

on BR07, give the lefties a break. Anyone who has examined history objectively knows that statism works like a charm every time it has been tried. Stop living in your right wing fantasy land where capitalism provides the most opportunities for the most people. As Uptan Sinclair would say, stop believing the Big Lie.

personally

Im a bit jaded when it comes to racism talk. I get so tired of hearing how the South is full of a bunch of racist. Sure there is racism down here! I might talk slow but that doesnt make me stupid. There is racism all over this country, it just comes in different forms. Take Ohio, where there isn’t exactly a very high black population , say for Cleveland. My sister lived there for 10 years and supposedly lived in the Urban area. She said those people were more racist then anyone she knew in Alabama..Why? Cause they didn’t know any black people and they still thought they were better. But since there were no blacks to be racist against…of course they considered themselves not to be racist. Down here in the good ole south, going to school with, living next too, being friends with, seeing interracial couples is the norm. Heck i live in Atlanta and this has to be one of the most diverse cities i have ever seen. Nashville is like that…BHam is pretty mixed. Are there some pretty rough racist parts of the south..um duh but people in New Hampshire, Up State New York, etc are just as racist…they just don’t know it yet..

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

i'd have to agree that it's hard to pin down and you certainly cant say "the south is racist but the north isn't"

out here in arizona, second generation latinos and recent immigrants treat each other like dog sh*t (i hear the term “wetback” is used by latinos about 10 times more often than i hear it from a white person). and you could also say, that i just made a racist generalization with my previous statement. it exists in all forms and can be overt like the white high school kids with the noose in the “jena 6” episode, or institutional like with what the judge did to the “6” black kids who responded, or subtle and un-stated, like how most media outlets covered that case. plus there are so many socio-economic factors that come into play. some people just dont have the same opportunities as others do, people living in the same towns. it’s hard to find where as a society our role is to help correct that. because to some extent. individuals and communities owe it to themselves to be working on and improving themselves.

it’s a really tough issue…

i love football, and particularly youth-college ball, because of the ethics it teaches the players. hard work, discipline, learning about winning and losing and how to respond to it, teamwork, and dedication. it’s the ultimate meritocracy, i wish american culture were as clearly defined and easy to know right from wrong. (look at the legal criminals on wall street, the biggest scandal isn’t the AIG bonuses, it’s that we’re paying off the people AIG covered on Credit Default Obligations. those are the same banks who should have known better than to buy insurance from a company that couldn’t pay up. they’re the same banks who negotiated the first couple bailouts, and got most of the TARP money…. it’s all BOA and goldman sachs. and our Fed and Treasury Chairmen, Bernackie and Geithner, both have ties to both of those banks. i dont think coach bryant or saban would be giving their assistance bailouts like this, those a-holes would be riddin pine, like when Bear sat Joe Namath…)

anyway i was drunk the other night (st paddys day), sorry if i pissed anyone off
