What a total beauty, this hymn!

First off, who is man singing “The Old Rugged Cross” hymn? Who are the other Christians seen in the video. I gotta tell you, that was one beautiful rendition and performance! Secondly, Bless you son. I can’t do without the RBR Gospel Hour on Sundays. I’m a dedicated purviewer and look forward to what you put up each and every Sunday. Even when I’m 500 miles away from my residence out partying with old homegrowns catching up with lost time.

Found at a website dedicated to hymnal lyrics here. Just thought it would/could be useful to anyone else interested in following along with the song or to re-new their memory of this little-played Sunday hymn. Without further ado, enjoy:

“THE OLD RUGGED CROSS”

1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain:
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.

2. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
(Refrain)

3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.
(Refrain)

4. To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then he’ll call me some day to my home far away,
where his glory forever I’ll share.
(Refrain)

That is?

That’s the real Johnny Paycheck? Now, understand I was a total cowboy as a boy. I still get my country groove on, maybe not daily. . . .but enough to remember this. Johnny Paycheck was the first singer I actually and truly noticed ALWAYS wearing a black leather cowboy hat. He had one with silver rings around the brim. I remember telling my mama I wanted one for Christmas. I got a San Francisco Giants replica baseball helmet. Remember those? They usually gave them away at ballgames, called it- “Helmet Night”. We weren’t wealthy, but we made do. For the record. I HATE THE GIANTS. Always have, probably always will. But I wore that helmet. My mom gave it to me. Have a picture of me wearing that dreadful Giants helmet, it was one of those “camera booths” they used to have at the county fair. Get this. I just had my face painted at a booth prior to that and I was. . . . .yup, yup- painted as Peter Chriss from Kiss! Hell yeah!

also

known for the hit “Take this job and Shove it!!!”

That's the paradox of success. The moment you stop to enjoy it, you are in trouble. You have to keep moving forward. It's not what you have done that's important. It's where you are going.

That's it, how did I not pick up on that?

First off, it wasn’t until the haze of Scotch wore off that I realized Johnny Paycheck’s name and title of song HAS PROBABLY ALWAYS BEEN ON THE TOP OF THE VIDEO CLIP all along. I just recently noticed it. Secondly, as I watched this video for the umpteenth time, I kept saying to myself- I never realized how soulful JP really is and was.

And then- imaBamafan goes and writes JP’s huge hit “Take This Job and Shove It” and BLAMMO! It finally hit me. How could I forget that unique Paycheck-vibrato. I’m tellin you guys, I’ve been singing this hymn since Sunday. On the plane, truck, motorcycle, Starbuck’s line, and a lot in front of this laptop. Groovin’, moanin’, and feelin’ it like the soul-brotha I always think I am!

I’m gonna go out and find me some Paycheck music soon.

Paycheck...

….had quite a soulful voice, no doubt about that. This clip was actually taken from an infomercial type deal that was selling some kind of “Grand Ole Opry” performances package, I believe. Sadly, I actually remember watching it, but it was the coolest infomercial you’ll ever see, just a bunch of old country singers sitting around talking about the Opry and singing songs together in between sales pitches.

My girlfriend and I

Do you guys get that “Time Life” infomercial that’s 20 hours long selling “Soft Rock of the ’70’s” (or some variation, thereof?)? It has those 2 laddies from Air Supply pitching it?

My g-friend is from Australia and one night- after a SNL viewing- we were channel surfing and came across it. We stayed up ‘til 4 AM watching that thing. It never seemed to end. And the songs were bombizzle! I actually should just buy that package. I know I’d bump that sh_t all weekend on every weekend for the next 2 years.

“Baby come BACK! (listen to me. . .)” Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

wow.

great pro-labor song too. damn the bosses and filthy capitalist pigs who would see us starve to death before they would share the crumbs from their table!

Take this job and shove it
I ain’t working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way
As im a walking out the door.
Take this job and shove it
I ain’t working here no more

Ive been workin in this factory
From now on fifteen years
All this time I watched my woman
Drowning in a pool of tears
And Ive seen a lot of good folk die
Who had a lot of bills to pay
I’d give the shirt right off of my back
If I had the nerve to say

(Chorus)

Well that foreman, hes a regular dog
The line boss, hes a fool
Got a brand new flat-top haircut
Lord, he thinks hes cool
One of these days, Im gonna blow my top
And that sucker, hes gonna pay
Lord I cant wait to see their faces
When I get up the nerve to say

(Chorus)

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...
