Anything jump out at you when looking at the scrimmage stats?
Greg McElroy: 22-of-33 (67%) for 214 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs
Star Jackson: 6-of-16 for 25 yards, 1 INT
Terry Grant: 18 rushes for 63 yards
Julio Jones: 5 receptions for 56 yards and 1 TD
Rolando McClain: 10 tackles, 2 INTs, 2 sacks
Tyrone King: 7 tackles, 2 INTs
Colin Peek: 7 receptions, 33 yards, 2 TDs
McElroy's numbers are pretty good considering his dreadful showings in last year's scrimmages, and Saban was....what exactly? (emphasis mine)
"I was really sort of not at all disappointed with where we are. It actually went a little better than anticipated. We were further along than I thought we would be."
Perhaps a ludic smile crossed his face during practice. Anyway, I highlighted Peek's numbers because he's been a tantalizing x-factor ever since he transferred. He caught 25 passes for 248 yards and a TD at Ga. Tech, and with both Nick Walker and Travis McCall graduated and the need for both experience and all around talent to step up at TE, it's good to see he has already fit into the passing game. Now we just have to figure out who will fill McCall's lead blocking shoes....

GMac actually looking good.
The D should be ahead of the O at this point in time. Plus our D is going to be awesome this year. And yet GMac looks pretty good!!
To me it looks like the biggest worry we have is putting together an O line that will give Greg time to throw. If we can do that he can deliver. Remember JPW looked much better last year compared to the year before since he had some time to throw.
Does anyone know who the starting 5 O linemen were today?
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

i bet you won’t ask Saban that?
‘When you build a house and you make it hurricane-proof by putting certain kinds of windows in it, and use cement instead of stick construction and all that kind of stuff, you’re getting prepared for what? A hurricane that may or may never every come." ’We’re going to have 12 hurricanes next year, we know they’re coming.’

Who else threw that last pick?
King and McClain snatched 4 INT’s between them. GMac and Star threw 3 picks. And Colin Peek! Damn, this is looking good. Real good.

I'd bet...
….Thomas Darrah saw some time under center….

I read that latest stat
Darrah threw 3 INT’s! (ouch, that’s gotta take the ludic off any smile from any coach)

What is most impressive is...
how well the passing game was considering that the defense most likely knew our running game would be mediocre at best with Upchurch and Ingram out. Also, I would love to see how they utilized Grant in the rushing attack.
I hope Star improves significantly because his numbers are fugly…maybe he just had a bad day.
Seeing Saban’s smile at the presser was a pleasant surprise. The future is promising.

Terry Grant is a beast
people always underrate him.
Honestly Im surprised he hasn’t transfered. I probably would if I was him because he has a chance at the bigs in my opinion, and if he’s not gonna get PT at Bama he’s throwing away a fat paycheck.
Did he put himself in a dog house with Saban or something?
im not impressed with your performance

Grant....
….is a great scatback, but he isn’t a between the tackles yards after contact kind of kid, and that’s what our offense is built around now. I hope they can find a role for him, but when Ingram gets healthy and Richardson shows up (plus, if Upchurch will ever get healthy), I don’t see him getting on the field a lot unless they figure out some specific role for him.

all that being said
he leads all rushers by more than double
im not impressed with your performance

That is mainly..
due to the fact that he ran behind the first team OL and against the second team defense, while the others didn’t have that luxury.
I hope he does well and finds an impact role, but when the power backs arrive, I don’t see it happening.

Curious...
Just read the Tuscaloosa News article about the scrimmage and for the 3rd (i believe) day in a row, the Tide Tidbits mention that Brandon Fanney is not practicing due to blah blah blah. There has been no mention of Prince Hall. Is he back and I missed it, or has something more permanent happened that we don’t know about?

Hall is out "indefinitely"
and won’t be taking part in spring practice.

My early thought on McElroy
I think he will be up for some awards at the end of the season (Saban- if you hear of this please dont get mad- tho you would at least scowl at me).
Here’s why:
- Mac’s very smart
- He can actually look off the safety then hit his target. ie his TD to maze against the Barn
- Coach Mac is VERY good with QB’s. ie Brandstater
Of course you’ve got superman and snead. I think the SEC will have better QB play in general because of Petrino, Kiffin (it cant get worse for UT). And I think Greg is going to be a very nice surprise in efficiency- quite an upgrade from J.P.etc.etc.W

Exactly...
Saban said in his presser that McElroy also connected a TD pass that was dropped (by Maze?). I hope he continues to show the arm strength to get the ball deep.
With Star performing like he did, I wonder about the chances of McCarron coming in surpassing him next year.

That was one
element of JPW’s game that always ticked me off. He would always stare down the receiver. On passing downs, when the ball was snapped just follow his eyes, because that was where the ball was going.

I will tell you what's funny.....
How many people blog right here at RBR that Gmac would never be more than a back up qb at best? I’m sure if it were researched, quite a few. And now he’s impressing the coaches and fans alike, with some very good FIRST scrimmage stats.
How about we hold back saying that anyone is or isn’t going to be getting much playing come fall because if you haven’t learned anything from CNS, that there is NO one that is unreplaceable and anyone who steps up can play, be it qb, rb or whatever.
Aight.

I don't think anyone on this blog
has ever said who, without a doubt, will or will not be on the starting roster. Half of the posts on this blog are simply stating a fact.

@jtCrimson
I’ve been thinking this about GMac since seeing him in backup duties last year.
It doesnt have anything to do with his scrimmage stats. It has everything to do with:
- Coach Mac
- Greg’s smarts
by chucktrukk on Apr 3, 2009 1:58 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually.......
The statemant that was said was before last season and during the season prior to the Auburn game. I’m not saying anyone here claims to know starters, but to dismiss any player, at any time, crazy. ie: Rashad Johnson.
I’m do not know whether Gmac will produce once he starts getting hit for real or whether Star or Darrah will step, but I don’t right any of them off, know what CNS expects. May the best man win.
