Everybody is saying the Raiders will be taking Crabtree or Maclin. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they take Andre.

So yeah...
… I thought the Chiefs reached a bit on Jackson at #3. He was a good college player, but I never saw him being that elite, and I think they could have gotten a bit lower. I’m not really sure I see him being worth 30+ million guaranteed.

Chiefs should have gone with Crabtree
They have a decent QB now, and have been shoring up the defense with veteran linebackers, give Cassel someone to throw to, especially with Gonzalez now gone…

Big move...
The Jets trade up with the Browns — who have Eric Mangini, i.e. the guy that the Jets fired last year — to get Mark Sanchez.

Very interesting for Andre...
With the Jets taking Sanchez, that leaves both Eugene Monroe and Andre Smith on the board, the Bengals can have their pick of the tackles at #6. It’s not necessarily a given that Andre goes there.

According to Mel Kiper...
… what kept Andre from falling further was Nick Saban, who apparently gave nothing but rave reviews of Andre’s abilities and work ethic to the NFL scouts.

Raiders pick Darius Heyward-Bey...
Ah, gotta feel sorry for Raider fans… nothing like taking a low first round / high second round pick and make him a top ten pick because he has great speed. The fact that he caught a mere 42 passes for about 600 yards against the lowly ACC last year, that doesn’t matter.

WTF? Is it the all-star bust team? Gallery, D-Mac, Russell, Heyward-Bey? ESPECIALLY with Crabtree and Maclin available.

Al loves the deep ball..
… obviously a bit too much to be considered a healthy admiration.
In a lot of ways, though, this all goes back to the JaMarcus Russell pick, which honestly seems to be heading to be a fairly decent bust at this point. You draft a big-time QB, and then you draft a bunch more supposedly elite skill position guys to put around him, all the while ignoring all of your other needs. And hell, I imagine they take an OT next year.

Talk about a pass-happy league...
9 of the first 11 picks in this draft went on either quarterbacks, offensive tackles, receivers, corners, or rush ends.
If you are a guard, center, tailback, defensive tackle, or inside linebacker, you are just going to have to be an ultra-elite prospect to go that high.

I think it's a decent pick...
… and a significantly better pick than Sanchez.
Both are developmental guys who will need a couple of years, but Freeman comes at a much cheaper price. They’ll have to only give him 12-15 million guaranteed, and they didn’t have to give up the farm like the Jets did to get Sanchez.
I don’t think it’s a great pick because Freeman really doesn’t impress me aside from his size and his arm, but by the same token I don’t think it’s a terrible pick either because they didn’t have to give up a ton either like the Jets did with Sanchez.

I think...
I’ll be honest, I think they are both pretty similar. Truth be told, neither one really had much more coming out of college than a huge arm. Stafford just goes higher because he stayed healthier in college, wasn’t as fragile, and had better talent surrounding him at UGA.
by outsidethesidelines on Apr 25, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly
Brodie is just ridiculously fragile.
Even if you say Stafford was more athletic than Croyle, you have to remember Croyle finished with positive rushing yards behind one of the worst offensive lines around. Also, look what happened to us when we lost Croyle.
Plus, Brodies wife is smoking hot

Agreed...
They are a lot more similar than you would imagine at first glance.
And besides, everyone knows that the only thing that scouts find really appealing in Stafford was the massive arm. Nearly every other area was a concern, and that is the basic scouting report on Croyle too.

I really would have liked to see
what Croyle could have accomplished out in Kansas City had he been able to stay healthy enough to see their management shake the coaching house up. They completely rearranged their offense for Thigpen but refused to do so for Croyle.

He looks to be a good tight end prospect, but to me this just screams them taking someone to help out Stafford.

I'd say a few things...
Just a few thoughts on UGA from my point of view:
- UGA actually does have some pretty big coaching issues. Richt is a fine head coach and the offensive side is doing fine, but Willie Martinez is obviously a pretty big liability as defensive coordinator, and that really hurt them.
- Florida and Alabama were both that good last year, and UGA had them both on the schedule. Most years you get pretty lucky and don’t even get a single elite team on the entire schedule, but UGA got two in 2008, plus some tough OOC scheduling.
- Injuries hit them really bad in a lot of key areas, and the drop-off to the replacements was just too great to remain at a championship level.

At any rate, I found it interesting that only two SEC players went in the second round, though we did turn out six first rounders.

Glen Coffee selection
Hey, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. What do you folks think of Glen Coffee? He is being brought in to be a complementary back to Frank Gore. So he won’t be starting or getting the bulk of carries. What are your thoughts on Coffee in this kind of role?
by Fooch on Apr 26, 2009 9:56 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably the ideal role for him...
He’s a good, physically pounding runner, and he would probably do well to platoon with Gore. He’s not the explosive kind of runner that Gore is, but he can extend Gore’s career by taking some of the carries, and he can give you some solid production.
And beyond that, I think he just fits with what Singletary wants. He’s a good kid, very tough, who will work hard.
by outsidethesidelines on Apr 26, 2009 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
so true..
he’s not a speed guy and will hit the hole hard and get you the tough yards. He’s also big enough to take pas rushers on. Im a little shocked he went this early but i think he’s a good pick up for SF.

but i can tell you that glen is a very determined young man. he made a concious decision last summer and publicly claimed the season he was going to have BEFORE summer practice began. the niners have selected a diamond in the rough that will soon shine in whatever opportunity he is given.

just kidding. I hoped you would draft JPW, but I know you’re not going to blow a draft pick on someone you could just as easily sign (if you even want him) as a free agent.
At least JPW didn’t go the Brian Hoyer route with ESPN cameras in his house to document his non-selection. Hoyer wasn’t even given good gear by Reebok. That first t-shirt looked like something from their 1985 catalog.
