Apparently in auburn

shirts come in one size. They love the loose fit in the upper chest, not because of their pecs, but because most men in auburn have he-hooters.

You have to feel pretty good for these guys...

…since they’ll still be able to wear those shirts in a couple of years when they’re serving up my pintos-n-cheese and meximelt.

What's the most popular

phrase among auburn grads? “You want fries with that?”

by CousinEddie on Apr 28, 2009 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

an amber alert...

…is an all points notice that a child is missing. it’s named for amber hagerman, a seven year old girl from arlington texas who, in 1996, was riding her bike in a supermarket parking lot when she was abducted in plain daylight. her body was found about a week later stuffed in a culvert. the incident happened less than a mile from where i lived at the time.

i had the extremely unpleasant experience of interviewing amber’s mother, Donna Norris, for a story a year later about the investigation being closed without her daughter’s killer being caught. I’ve rarely met anyone as kind and gracious as Ms. Norris and it bothers me quite a bit when i see jokes like this.

if the aspersion here is that the auburn brain trust are child molesters this is an ill thought out joke. the amber alert is designed to get the word out that a child has been abducted for any reason. very often amber alerts are issued for children abducted by their own parents due to custody disputes. perhaps labeling it 11-54, the police code for suspicious vehicle would be closer to the mark but the lame still shines through the effort.

i’m all for mocking the barners for the boobs they are but this is a lame effort that not only lacks humor, it is at the expense of something that we should do everything possible to support. besides, the stupidity of these clowns in the limo really doesn’t need a caption to be funny, does it?

by kleph on Apr 28, 2009 6:18 PM CDT reply actions

Thank you, kleph...

…because I’m guessing most of us weren’t giving much thought to the caption. Like you said, it really doesn’t need a caption to be funny. But it does seem to call for one. My own caption would have to be:

“Snow White (Limo) and the Seven (Mental) Dwarves”.

Slow down

Kleph, this obviously struck a nerve with you. I’m not particularly apt at conveying tone through the written word so let me just come right out and say that I’m not dismissing or making light of what you posted. I think you overreacted to this.
Metaphors are often loaded. You can rage on about the realities of piracy – the rape, murder, and theft – and wax indignant about the victims of modern day pirates when people refer to Mike Leach as a pirate captain (as almost all college football blogs have at one point or another), or you can take it in the lighthearted spirit in which it was meant. The picture was not meant to disparage Amber or those whom the same fate has befallen. The thrust of the joke is that Auburn coaches are going from school to school and presenting themselves in a manner calculated to impress underage, well proportioned, and physically active boys. Everything in that last sentence innocently refers to a coach recruiting or sinisterly refers to a chicken-hawk on the "prowl" (their word, not mine). That we call for Amber Alerts when a child is missing is a fact of modern life. A joke is often made by taking facts and drawing the wrong and unexpected conclusion. A joke often makes light of serious real world situations as well. I’m not saying that jokes can’t be spiteful or cruel. They can if intended that way. As a reader you have to judge the intent for yourself. I’ve seen your comments often enough to know that you have been a reader of this blog for at least as long as I have and as a fairly long time reader I can tell you, no harm was intended.
As you wrote, you were close to the Amber situation. That’s not the best point from which to judge. I’m not callous to your objections but I think taking Todd to task over this is overkill.

If it were up to me, I'd blitz on offense too.

I'll move it off the main page...

…since it clearly has kleph upset, but I still find it amusing.

by Todd on Apr 28, 2009 10:07 PM CDT reply actions

yeah

i think kleph makes a good point though. i thought it was hilarious and didn’t give a second thought to the caption until i read klephs comments, and he makes a good point. sometimes we (especially me) can get a bit carried away in the jokes and mockery… this blog is awesome and the community of people on here contribute a great deal to it overall….

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

I wish...

…that was really the only problem with our society today. That picture of the AU cheerleaders mooing outside Jerdin-Hayer Stadium is much more offensive to me.
