Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Alabama secured its fifth recruiting commitment on Saturday, when Blake Sims of Gainesville, Ga., committed to the Tide.

Sims, a 6-foot, 180-pound quarterback and safety, picked UA over offers from Arkansas, Florida State, and Georgia. He is not yet rated by Scout.com or Rivals.com.

"Blake feels like he has a chance to come in and play quarterback right away at Alabama," Gainesville High offensive coordinator Todd Wofford told BamaOnline. "Blake said if he doesn't play quarterback, he wouldn't mind playing defensive back because of Coach Saban's reputation."

Very big pick-up...

This one is a big get, no two ways about it.

Sims has done well at the high school level as a quarterback, and we’ll give him a chance there, but he’s likely going to end up playing safety at Alabama. Either way, it’s hard to complain. Sims is a great athlete, and he’s the type of versatile player that Saban is looking for.

I think all you have to do is look at his offer list in order to get a good idea of his abilities. It’s really nice to see us building the Georgia pipeline… I imagine it will only grow from here.

kinda bothers me...

…that he attended one practice and “feels like he has a chance to come in and play quarterback right away”. makes me wonder what he saw?

Wouldn't

read too much into it. I think all kids are that cocky coming out of high school. Also don’t think we recruited him to play QB.

Is it August yet?

also,

i’ve seen a couple of posts regarding commits for some of our rivals. are we way ahead of the game here or is it not unusual for kids to commit this far in advance? i realize NSD is the day everything shakes out, but do any of y’all know how lsu, florida, arky, ole miss, etc are doing as far as their 2010 potential classes?
