Pre-season ranking is . . .

Tide comes in at number 10, many spots higher than Utah.  Sports Illustrated says:

Key returnees: RB Mark Ingram, WR Julio Jones, NT Terrence Cody, LB Rolando McClain, CB Javier Arenas.

Spring star: QB Greg McElroy. Chase Daniel's former understudy at Carroll (Southlake, Texas) High won the starting job handily this spring.

Spring recap: With Cody, McClain and Arenas leading a stacked defense, the Crimson Tide probably won't have to score many points. That should allow McElroy, who will play behind an inexperienced line, some room for error. But should McElroy have trouble, he need only remember one thing: Throw it to Jones.

They rank Ole Miss higher.

preseason rankings this early

are for the birds. I say we come in somewhere around 6-7

Preseason rankings at anytime are for the birds...

….they have VA Tech at #5 and Ole Miss at #7

It sales magazines and gives us something to talk about…which is a good thing.

With Taylor at QB? and no running game?

The Georgia Dome will be just as sweet this year.

don't tell VT fans....

they don’t have a running game. They think Evans and the freshman coming in are going to push over our D-line…ha

Also, I don’t have the exact numbers, but if I remember correctly, every time VT is ranked high and people start getting crazy in Blacksburg, they blow it.

va tech 5 and ol miss 7?

seriously? why not have us #2 then, or at least #4? seriously. are we not as equally un-qualified as ol miss and va tech? we are all 3 busting out new QB’s or O-lines, and of the 3, BAMA is the only one returning nearly all of their previously dominant defense…

I do...

…have a healthy respect for the Ole Miss QB, but ain’t no way he will be as comfortable without Oher, or that Greg Hardy will be as effective without Peria Jerry to cotend with as well. I’m wit ya, tbf.

Yea

This is just SI talking, And besides I think when the real pollsters make the “real preseason polls” we’ll come in around 5-6th, And I do agree Ole Miss deserves some credit, But not that much of it, I say they should be 11th or somewhere around in there, And hey look on the bright side of this, Even if this is what the real polls look. VT is 5# so we’d move up alot in the 1st week, Much like last year so i don’t see it as being “really bad” but disrespectful to have VT and Ole Miss ahead of us.

by bama_man on May 2, 2009 4:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ole Miss to me

sounds a lot like Clemson last year. A lot of hype with little to go on.Their D wasn’t the greatest last year and really neither was the offense. Im not saying they are terrible but #7 is a stretch. I would have them around #17 in my top 25.

have a very favorable schedule I really wouldn’t be suprised to see them win 8-9 games this year.

agreed about the schedule

however i still predict doom and gloom for them. i’m predicting a wheels off the wagon type meltdown.

just for kicks lets have a look shall we…

Sept. 5 NEVADA (okay, win. though san diego state pushed them to the limit in week one (or maybe week 2) last year)
Sept. 12 at Michigan (loss, as much as i hate brian cook, richrod wins this one)
Sept. 19 MICHIGAN STATE (loss, halfway decent team, should pull it out)
Sept. 26 at Purdue (toss up, “road” game, but tiller’s O is score-y)
Oct. 3 WASHINGTON (win, but i dont discount that an L is possible here)
Oct. 10 Open Date (weiss’ last last stand.. he should be jobless in 8 weeks or less)
Oct. 17 USC (LOSS)
Oct. 24 BOSTON COLLEGE (LOSS)
Oct. 31 vs. Washington State (at San Antonio, Texas) (toss up)
Nov. 7 NAVY (toss up)
Nov. 14 at Pittsburgh (loss)
Nov. 21 CONNECTICUT (loss)
Nov. 28 at Stanford (toss up)

i got 2 wins, 6 losses, and 4 toss ups. maybe they get to 6 wins but i doubt it. even their 2 "w"’s seem sketchy to me. i guarantee they dont sweep nevada, both washingtons, navy, purdue, and stanford. anyway if my “wheels falling off” prediction comes true, they wont finish with more than 5, probably 4 wins, with a loss @ stanford to end the weiss era in style.

I

could see your scenario playing out. However I think the fact that ND is one of the very few programs in CFB that has an O-line with 100 starts between them will be a big plus for them. Ironically, VT is only other school with an o-line with 100 starts. THAT scares me about VT. Sounds a lot like us last year and look at the run we had.

the combined carreer starts for oline

is a pretty important stat, and honestly, i was making a big deal on these here boards about our 114 (or somthin like that) coming into last year…

but i’l make an exception in notre dame’s case. they still suck, those starts didn’t mean crap if clausen was running for his life half the time. (honestly i halfway believe that line of reasoning) but if i make it to vegas this summer i’m taking the under on whatever their season win total prop will be (i’d guess 7.5).

VT’s o-line, thats another story. it’s going to take some work for me to justify writing that unit off.

I don't see . . .

Ole Miss beating you guys this year. I expect your DBs to improve and your line to prevent them from running on you.

by MeanBobMean on May 4, 2009 7:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The only thing that scares me about Ole Miss...

…is their favorable schedule. We have back to back road games at Kentucky then at Ole Miss. With travel, this will cut into practice time. They on the other hand will have a bye week before they play us. Giving them two full weeks to prepare or game plan us. Other than that, I feel we have the edge in every way….but something to cause a little concern.

by akbrown15 on May 4, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Days off . . .

Often work against teams, but I think that close game last year should serve as a motivation for your squad as well as theirs.

Kentucky will be an off week for you guys, just watch. While they were improved, they are slipping again.

Bottom line? Blood will tell my friend, and y’all’s is superior, deeper, and better coached. Saban thrives off adversity, it is complaceny he cannot tolerate and which is a threat to your team.

by MeanBobMean on May 5, 2009 7:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

kentucky had a D-line

full of mean dudes last year. myron prior is the only one i can specifically remember, and he’s gone, let’s hope the rest of the guys were just riding his coattails.

i think we’ll beat ole miss though. they wont sneak up on anyone this year and I think our secondary is going to be almost as good as the front seven. i dont think snead is going to be able to win it on his own, and good as mcluster and davis may be, i dont think they’ll be rushing with a high efficiency rate. leaving snead hanging on 3 rd and long, to face the vultures…

Sorry to be rude, they are probably my second favorite team, but this is Ole Miss. The true die-harders, and believe me they have more than you think, will tell you too that this year will be a success at 7-5.

look i live in MS

and at school its MSU fans and UM fans!! MSU fans are funny just because when they watch a game every time they make a good play they say things like alright now whos gonna screw us up this time (tlkn about how they always choke!!) so when MSU isnt playing us i pull for them just because i feel sorry for them!! however UM fans!! OMG third on my HATE LIST
1. UT
2. AU
3. UM
They are some of the most ignorant fans out there!! they are a mix between UT and LSU!!! they drink like LSU fans and they are as cocky as UT fans (or close to it) and as soon as they have a couple good years they say stupid SH$& like " yeah back to the glory years" and " yeah you tiders better watch out for the rebs!!" and my personal fav!! “FEAR THE O” ( which in all reality doesnt make to much since!! anyways my point is as soon as these fans who are oblivious to the obvious (the obvious being they have ltl or no tradition outside of deuce mcallister and the manning family) will go crazy when they find out about their ranking!!! and i get to listen to it allllll year!! THNX ESPN!!!

The same things win that always won, and we just have a bunch of new excuses as to why we didnt achieve it!!! RDT

1. University of Tennessee
2. Virginia Tech (VPI)

UT and VT fans are the worst…maybe they’ll play each other in a bowl game this year.

I'm no fan...

…of the Rebels, but they certainly have more tradition than McCallister and the Mannings. They won titles (SEC and national) under John Vaught, and their tailgating tradition is second to none. The only teams in the SEC West with greater tradition have been coached by CNS.

That being said, their fans do possess an odd sense of superiority for a program that generally resides in the lower half of the conference.

I respect UM for their gritty play last year,

but that was last year. They had a good O-line, a decent D-line, and a good QB. But has everyone failed to remember who their head coach is? He never could not get it just right at Arky, and they had alot, I mean alot, of talent. Although, even a blind mouse finds cheese, and a broken clock is right twice a day, so you never know.

by NiceLittleSaturday on May 4, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you 100%,

but look at Nutt’s track record. You can generally pencil him in for six or seven wins a year, but he always seems to drop the big ones.

by CousinEddie on May 5, 2009 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You mean...

…like when he beat the national champs last year, or the year before that?

by NiceLittleSaturday on May 5, 2009 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually,

I was referring to the 2006 season when he lost to USC, LSU, Florida, and Wisconsin. Also the 2007 season when he lost to Bama, Kentucky, Auburn, Tenn., and Missouri. His overall record while he was at Arky was 75 wins and 48 loses. And his bowl record was 2 wins to 5 loses. I never said he was a bad coach, I just based my opinion on facts.

by CousinEddie on May 5, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously...

…I took you too literally when you said, “he always seems to drop the big ones”.

I’m not a huge fan of Nutt or Ole Miss, but I don’t think he was a tremendous underachiever at Arkansas, and last season was a magical one for Ole Miss fans, beating Florida, humiliating their in-state rival, and thumping a top-ten team in the Cotton Bowl. Hell, I would have settled for that at the start of last season. Anyway, I agree that Nutt is no CNS or Urban Meyer, but he’s much better than what they had, and I think he’s one of the top coaches in the SEC today…no matter how Nutty he is.

by NiceLittleSaturday on May 5, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree,

he is a definate improvement over what they had. He is no doubt “Nutty”. When he is on the sidelines, you never know if he is flagging a 747 jumbo-jet in for a landing, or about to take his afternoon flight over Oxford. Arms going everywhere, headsets being flipped up and down, the dude is a sight.

Great coach

and a great fit at Ole Miss. Although it turned out to be a big win for Ole Miss, the Ole Miss/Florida game and its early Lincoln Financial slot kickoff, wasn’t billed as a huge game at the time. I think it was the same day as Bama/UGA and the (merciful) death of the blackout.

Every playmaker they had against Bama either graduated or left early for the pros. They’ll be out of the Top 25 by week 4.

Not on CBS again !!

by skycaster on May 6, 2009 4:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Third week of season . . .

Oregon, just noting.

Possibly true, but if Utah falls it will be a mental breakdown for they return 9 on defense and replace the DBs lost with guys as competent. We had a couple D line starters out to injuries last year—they back. Kruger will be missed, but I’m betting not much since the ends we moved inside will be back outside to make room for our true nose tackles.

We lost all our best receivers, we might miss one of those.

O line is the real problem. If the O-line gels and Whittingham gets them over themselves and their newly minted egos?

They’ll be playing for another BCS bowl if they top Oregon. If they get full of themselves? 8-4 and the Flinstone Vitamins bowl.

Is Oregon any good? They’d give any team in the SEC as much game as they’d like to see. They wouldn’t necessarily beat them all, but they wouldn’t necessarily lose, either.

If I called ‘Bama my home state, I’d hope like hell Utah wins 9 – 11.

All are picking TCU, but they lost most of their D, we lost more O. I’d take D in that game, and we win often down there.

So, that’s the prediction. Somewhere between 8-4 and 12-0, and entirely dependant on mental toughness.
