Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

NCAA investigators appear to be building a case to show the University of Southern California has demonstrated a lack of institutional control and failure to monitor some aspects of its football and men’s basketball programs, multiple sources interviewed in the probe told Yahoo! Sports.

As per the latest reports from Yahoo! Sports, it's not looking too good for USC right now. As much as people love to talk about them supposedly getting away with everything, it is certainly looking more and more like they will probably face major sanctions in both football and men's basketball. I know many of you downright hate the Trojans, I personally have nothing against them, but with that said, I'm certainly not envious of their situation right now. I'd sure as hell much rather have Textbook-gate on my hands than this stuff.

And as a further point, I'd also make note that one of the top assistant coaches and the leading recruiter at USC at the time was none other than... drum roll please... Lane Kiffin. I'm not necessarily accusing him of any specific wrongdoing on his behalf, but if the program gets hit with LOIC, it's pretty hard to say he was completely ignorant (or should have been completely ignorant) about what was going on, and with all of the goings on in his tenure thus far at Tennessee, that personally makes this Alabama fan crack a bit of a smile.

And it gets worse...
A former associate of NBA star O.J. Mayo says that Southern California basketball coach Tim Floyd paid a man who helped get Mayo to play for the Trojans, Yahoo! Sports reported on Tuesday.

Louis Johnson, the former associate of Mayo’s, told the Web site that Rodney Guillory told him that Floyd had given Guillory “a grand.” Johnson said he was able to view $100 bills inside an envelope Guillory had.

Now we have allegations of the men’s basketball head coach himself directly giving the star basketball player money. Again, I have nothing against the Trojans, but I’m afraid they are about to be staring down the proverbial barrel in their own right.

… there is no real doubt about that one.

Of course, though, in all fairness, a lot of top college basketball recruits are considered toxic too, and Mayo was far from an isolated incident. Most elite basketball recruits these days come with inner circles, “advisors,” package deals, meddling AAU coaches and everything else you can imagine.

We used to play this game as kids. . . .

. . . so. . .imagine playing one-on-one AND “horse” with a buddy? The whole game, we could only score our “letters” (to spell out “Nate Thurmond”, sometimes playing quick games to “Nate”. . . .okay?) by slamming it off the backboard (going mad – BANK) . . .and if you made it (you are also allowed to loosely play defense on each other, sometimes. . .. .the other guy is busting out in a stitch of laughter. . .he can’t “go on” for a spell or two). . . .so if you made it saying “Hi! I’m Nate Thurmond!” – almost yelling it, and then you’d get. . . .you get your letter. First one to spell the name? Wins!

Is that what you’re talking about tempe? That kinda layup?

For those of you not "in the know"

Nate Thurmond played for the Golden State Warriors. He was a giant gentleman. He talked a lot of smack. He called it like he saw it back in his day. He was way before my time, really. But the big kids on the block (my brother and sisters included) would always be playing sports and stuff. We smaller kids overheard a lot of their stories and jokes to each other. We were in awe of some of the high-schoolers in our neighborhood. Some were all-Section or all-County or all-City/League/whatever.

My friends and I picked up on Nate and his legendary years at Oakland Coliseum through these kids and the parents. Everyone played sports in our neighborhood. Nate Thurmond wasn’t the most graceful player and countless times he clanked an easy layup or he’d throw up copious “bricks”. . . .it wasn’t even funny. He missed way more than he made. But. . .he was a bruiser. Kareem says Nate was the best defender he ever faced. Anyway, our game: It was such a new; original game that we smaller kids played- the older kids picked up on it and started playing their own games.

Our friend Isaac-Isaac (Ike Ike, for short) told us his dad called Nate Thurmond a “hoss”. So we called our game, “HOSS” (a variation of “horse” in honor of Nate).

True story.

Moses...

…played for a few teams, and I do believe he was the first player to go straight from high school to the NBA.

In 1983, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers alongside Andrew Toney, Maurice Cheeks, and the all-time greatest, Julius Erving a.k.a. Dr. J, or simply, the Doctor.

Before the playoffs that year, at the close of the Sixers’ record-setting season, Moses was asked for his prediction for the Sixers in the postseason, to which he replied: “Fo, fo, fo.” Meaning: the Sixers would dispatch of each of their opponents in four straight. Actually, they lost one, but swept the “Showtime”-era Lakers, and it wasn’t even close. Good times.

it's not that i doubt the folks at Yahoo sports

(i believe every word of their stories on this subject) i just dont believe the NCAA has the desire/fortitude to follow through. the the allegations about reggie bush are true. then they shoudl have to forfeit all game she played in after receiveing those benefits as well as lose like 20 scholarships and get 2 years of probation. I dont see them going this far. when they caught either jarret or smith (on of the WR’s getting benefits from matt leinarts dad of all people) he wasn’t even ruled ineligible, he wasn’t suspended for a single game his senior year, much less ruled ineligible for the games he played while receiving the benefits. USC didn’t have to forfiet a game, or lose a scholarsghip, even though the AD knew about a player living in off campus housing he wasn’t paying for.

whats worse: players receiving a free supplimental book to go w/ their lit class? or a player living a million dollar apartment on wilshire blvd free of charge?

by tempebamafan on May 13, 2009 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's the lowdown on that:

That neighborhood seemed a world away last year when Dwayne Jarrett, who had lived with Leinart as a freshman, moved with him into a $3,866-a- month rooftop suite at a downtown luxury apartment building.

“It was great,” Dwayne Jarrett said of the gated complex that has a two pools, tennis courts, a fitness center and a secured parking garage filled mostly with late-model luxury cars.

The only problem was that Dwayne Jarrett paid $650 in rent, the same as Leinart, whose father covered the rest.

The arrangement, which came to light and was brought forth in a compliance review with player and school compliance official at USC- then corroborated with Matt Leinart and his father. School officials deemed it was a violation by Dwayne Jarrett of NCAA rules, which prohibit athletes from receiving benefits that aren’t available to other students and reported it to NCAA officials.

Dwayne Jarrett, who was required by the NCAA to pay $5,352 to charity, was reinstated in early August.

“It wasn’t like we weren’t paying rent. Then it would be a different story,” said Dwayne Jarrett, who lived by himself this season in a $1,000-a-month downtown apartment. "Me and Matt came to an agreement that we were going to pay a certain amount to his dad. We thought it was a good deal. (But) if we could do it all over again, we probably would have done it
differently.

. . . are on the 11th floor of a 21 story complex. They lived in the smaller of the towers, the towers connected on the 11th floor via the pool, deck/dining area/jacuzzi and separate bathroom/shower facilities. Those shower facilities had 150 lockers in them, 25 stalls and a grip of showers for independent/private hygiene purposes.

There’s enough talent and prestige in house to keep them afloat through a few years of probation as long as Carroll stays, and as we saw with the punishment for FSU’s academic scandal, the NCAA is extremely reluctant anymore to issue postseason bans.

As long as Carroll’s head doesn’t roll for this and Saban doesn’t leave T-Town (both of which are unlikely to happen in my estimation), next season won’t be your only shot.

by Year2 on May 12, 2009 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh, maybe...

There is no doubt whatsoever that USC is absolutely loaded with talent at the moment, but it’s nothing that significant sanctions wouldn’t erase. They would be fine for a year, maybe two at most, but after that it would be very, very tough. The real talented guys would graduate / leave early, and the incoming talent wouldn’t be there. The sanctions will lower both the quantity and quality of players signed. And that’s to say nothing of the possibility of Carroll leaving.

And I agree with you that the NCAA has been a bit more lenient since they broke one off in our asses seven years ago. However, I think the FSU comparison isn’t a very good one. Nothing the ’Noles did can really even come close to competing with the allegations that have came out so far in this case.

The only case in recent history that could even come close to this is the Means saga, and frankly that probably isn’t as bad as this. That only involved one sport, we were not hit with lack of institutional control or failure to monitor, and that was the action of a rogue booster (to use the NCAA’s words). This case is far more damning. It involves multiple sports, they apparently will likely be hit with LOIC and FTM, and this case involves the payment of hundreds of thousands of dollars directly to existing players, with allegedly at least one case coming with the head coach directly giving cash to the star basketball player. Truth be told, this one, if true, is even worse than the Means case.

Good point

Not to mention that everyone on the USC side of things has been as obstructionist as possible.

Do you know if there’s any precedent for sanctioning coaches who were involved in a scandal like this but moved on before punishment was meted out? Because then it’s not just Tennessee but also Washington with Sarkisian who could be in for something. I’m not that knowledgeable on the history of NCAA scandals, but I can’t recall one that took this long to resolve and where assistants went on to take head coaching jobs during the investigative process.

Just one...
Do you know if there’s any precedent for sanctioning coaches who were involved in a scandal like this but moved on before punishment was meted out?

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Kelvin Sampson. After the OU scandal, he had gone to Indiana, and the NCAA sanctioned him there from recruiting off-campus or making phone calls to recruits for one year. There may be other examples, but that’s all I am aware of right now.

At any rate, I don’t think anything whatsoever will happen to Kiffin (maybe Floyd if the allegations are true, but that’s it). Moving forward, the real sticking point will be whether or not we see these actions somewhat replicated in Knoxville.

beat barn 42-21

then beat a 9-2 ND team 49 to 24… now it’s conference tournament week, and i’m going to have to be Southern Miss for a quick game, cause Houston is the only other undefeated team, and if Houston wins the C-USA CCG then they play me (assuming i beat Florida on the same weekend, which i will).. so if i beat houston as So Miss, then i’ll either play one loss USC, or one loss Miami (i gave miami their loss @ miami in week 2)… either way is better than playing houston for the BCSCG…

and recruiting is coming along nicely. needed G’s and C’s got 2 each in the top 10… the number 1, 3, and 7 WR’s… some promissing athletes (one of the “athletes” is listed as 6’6" 330 lbs… i hope to god he can play TE… it’ll be freakin sweet!)

by speaking to investigators you create a situation of guilt by association in the public’s eye – even if you tell them you did nothing and make a big press conference after. the smarter move is to simply ignore it and – if you are innocent – wait for the NCAA to accuse you and sue the bejesus out of them.

which isn’t to say i believe these guys are guilty or not, just to point out that not talking to the NCAA isn’t necessarily an admission of guilt.

Whether or not it's worse than the Means case. . . .

. . . .“death penalty” punishment by the NCAA usually happens when teams are already on probation, which USC is not.

Tying the Bush, OJ, and payment incidents (if proven true) will more than likely come to the NCAA handing out punishments for the basketball team to include: going on probation, forfeiting games, a ban from postseason play, loss of scholarships, and perpetual mocking from the world of sports. As far as the football program separately- it’s still too cloudy to make out, but it can possibly be brutal- especially lumping it in with “lack of institutional control” . Possibly ban from post-season play, loss of scholarships, loss of championship, loss of awards (both national and in-conference). The possibilities are varied, but it comes with a big “If”. (if Coach Carroll and Coach McNair knew of Bush’s relationship with New Era/Ornstein/Lake from the get-go. So far, that has been the major sticking point and as yet, has been incredibly hard for the NCAA to discern)

Well...

I don’t think the death penalty would ever legitimately be on the table, honestly. However, again, if the allegations turn out to be true, it’s going to be pretty dang bad. Like I said, I think it would probably be worse punishment than given with Means, though not as bad as the Miami / Pell Grant scandal.

On the other hand, though, it’s almost impossible to get worse sanctions than 31 scholarships lost, so I’m not sure that’s saying a whole lot.

by outsidethesidelines on May 13, 2009 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions

_IF_ the NCAA takes away scholarships and imposes a 2 year bowl ban

you’ll likely see a lot fo that talent transfer to other schools, and they wont be nearly as loaded heading into their first year of post season eligibility….thats why i’m so skeptical the NCAA will do it. even though they’ve done worse to us for much much less serious offenses and from offenses created by people outside the AD… nevermind logic….

I've had thoughts along those lines too...

It’s great to be on top no matter how you get there, but it’s really special when you take down the team that’s been on top for a while to get there. I’m so glad my Prattville Lions got to beat Hoover for the first state title of their current run, rather than making it the following year after Probst left and they had kind of a downturn.

I’ve also thought it was a shame that USC never played LSU at their peak a few years ago. That would have been a great ballgame.

. . . . .a few hours ago too OTS.

If any of these allegations of Coach Floyd giving Guilllory $1K in Vegas and the pic of Ornstein and Lake with Coach Carroll hold true, coupled with what we already know with what allegedly took place with both Bush (payments to parents, mortgage, and fly-Impala) and Mayo ($30K over a 4 year period, Guillory gaining carte blanche “access” to USC basketball facilities, locker room, and games, Mayo’s connection to BDA Sports Agency). . . . .we ARE GONNA GET STOMPED!

Now in writing all this, I’m not one to be provoked. I’ll defend my school as much as the next guy. I just don’t want or expect to be piled on with this. This is hard enough to write as it is.

by BixBeiderbecke on May 12, 2009 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

I hear you...

… like I said earlier, I don’t have anything against USC, and generally I like the Trojans. Alabama and USC have had a longstanding good relationship, and I see absolutely no reason why that should be considered changed now. We’ve had countless classic games over the years, and in particular the ’70 and ’71 match-ups were seminal events in Alabama football history.

Oh sure, USC has killed everyone the past few years, but it’s not like that has hurt Alabama in any way. We haven’t faced each other in over 20 years, and the next recruit that USC steals away from Alabama will be the first. And in fact, USC has actually done Alabama a ton of favors over the years by stealing away kids who would otherwise be playing at SEC schools (i.e. the Joe McKnight’s of the world). Again, I have nothing against USC, and frankly I don’t see any reason why any Alabama fan should.

That said, though, I’m going to be really honest with you man… if these allegations turn out to be true, you guys are going to get nailed, and just being brutally honest, probably deserve to get nailed. If true — and I understand that may very well be a big if, and there may be no truth to these allegations — as I mentioned earlier, this would be worse than anything that ever happened with the Means scandal, and that resulted in five years probation, twenty-one scholarships lost, and a two-year bowl ban. If the NCAA is truly consistent in applying the punishments — obviously that’s not likely, but just for argument’s sake — then what you guys will get will be worse than that. In particular, since this involves a player who would be considered ineligible in hindsight, I imagine you will at least see the ’05 games forfeited.

I don’t know, like I said I don’t have anything against USC, and they are generally fine in my book, but if this turns out to be true, this is going to get extremely ugly for the Trojans. If the NCAA is serious about punishment — and I imagine they will have to be in such a high profile case — then you guys will probably get than we did with Means. I don’t think it will be as bad as Miami in the mid-1990’s, but it’s still going to be pretty bad. The only way I can see USC getting around this is if they can dispute the factual claims here. If they cannot successfully do that…

by outsidethesidelines on May 13, 2009 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

And I'm right with you!

If ANY of these allegations turn out to be true, USC DESERVES all the punishment the NCAA can mete out. It’s a tough pill, but it will be one that will definitely have to be taken, just to “move on” from all this craziness.

There’s nothing really to defend when/if all the chips fall into a truthful place and it shows how lenient ‘SC was with letting Guillory gain access and if Coach Carroll even had an “inkling” of Lake and Ornstein being tight with Reggie Bush. That’s just stupid and insane.

The only thing that keeps things in the WTF-realm is, why hasn’t the NCAA, FBI, or IRS come down hard on Mike Garrett (the ‘SC AD). I mean, why even offer Coach Floyd the contract extension he just got 2 months ago? Why keep this and a few other new revelations more transparent to the alumni and/or public with some shadiness that may or EVEN MAY NOT have played out in Coach Carroll’s locker room? I can only guess, but like you said- if any of this comes off as being even slightly true (damn the hard evidence aspects, and I mean it) USC IS GONNA DESERVEDLY GET NAILED AND NAILED HARD!

I’m pissed, and have been for some time. On the allegations and the time it’s taken for this stuff to finally come to it’s conclusion.

And unwarranted. I mean, I’m not saying this because it mirrors the Bush situation- it allegedly happened in the privacy of a players down-time- but how is Coach Saban supposed to know about the goings-on of player away from campus?

What is the authority, both: legal and withing Alabama Compliance parameters, in monitoring a player and his associations? Alabama did the right thing in keeping Andre out of practice and out of the Sugar Bowl. They did ALL THE RIGHT THINGS. I can’t say that for Coach Carroll, if indeed, he knew of the Lake/Ornstein association with Reggie (supposedly, there’s a picture of Lake, Ornstein, and Carroll on the sidelines after a game?).

If that’s the NCAA penalty, USC will get FREAKING HAMMERED for sure, and if all things fair- they (USC) should get hammered even more!

The

problem is that participation in the NCAA is on a voluntary thing. You don’t have to be a member. You won’t have a sports program because you won’t play anybody, but there is no mandate. So I guess they have the attitude of a monopoly, if you don’t like it, there’s the door. But knowing full well that isn’t an option.

A commenter over at CC had an interesting take

Zoulou states that Johnson would be crazy to have lied to federal authorities, thereby- he feels that Johnson’s allegation that Coach Floyd paid Guillory has a lot of merit. And, as such, it would definitely put a huge burden on the basketball program (bury it and be buried for at least a decade) BUT. . . . .it would be good news for the football program under Coach Carroll. His logic is simple, it would take away the “lack of institutional control” heaviness the NCAA is placing on the investigation- read: linking both bball and fball programs = institutional control parameters. With that said, Zoulou believes that the fball program will come away unscathed, so long as the telescope beads on Floyd and not so much on Carroll, and to that end- the punishment by the NCAA will be taken solely on the bball program.

Interesting, to say the least. I’m not entirely sold on it however.

The NCAA is the NCAA. They can pretty much do what they will and want. If they want to make a statement and show authority, if I were them, I find any way to hit both programs. I’m just glad I’m not not them.

I think that's the problem...
The NCAA is the NCAA. They can pretty much do what they will and want. If they want to make a statement and show authority, if I were them, I find any way to hit both programs.

Well, I think that’s the problem, the NCAA can do whatever it wants, and in extremely high profile cases like this one, I think they feel compelled to come down with a heavy hand, or otherwise their legitimacy as an institution becomes greatly undermined in the eyes of the general public.

Truth be told, I think that was really the biggest thing we were fighting with the Means scandal. The NCAA could have done anything they wanted, and regardless of what we did in our own defense (and regardless of how valid that may have been), they were nevertheless going to hammer us. It was such a high profile case, and we had long since been convicted in the court of public opinion, and as a result we were getting hammered regardless. We could have probably factually disputed every single contention and still gotten hammered, that was entirely beside the point.

And ultimately, I think that’s the problem for USC here. This is an extremely high profile case, many have already made up their minds on this one, and the general consensus will probably be, if USC gets off, that the NCAA just decided to look the other way. If I were a USC fan, my major fear would be that the NCAA would try to show otherwise in a big way.

by outsidethesidelines on May 13, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Trust me, we are fearing for the worse.

What so ridiculous right now though is, people don’t quite realize the doldrums the football program was under during the Robinson II and Hackett years. Losing to fUcla all that time (like a millenium it seemed in our rivalry games)- they just think we’ll pick up and get back to it.

It won’t be so easy. It’ll be another cycle of being down in the dumps for years to come IF the NCAA makes it’s mind up to label “lack of institutional control” and hammer away at scholarships, post season play, and forfeiture of games.

The La-la crowd just has no idea right now. But. . . . .fair is fair. Punishment is warranted whether or not Coach Carroll and Coach McNair looked the other way while Reggie Bush was in a ’SC uniform.

for the record...

Yahoo! Sports has taken it upon themselves to uncover the malfeasance in the USC program. for more than two years they have pursued the Reggie Bush story almost alone with only occasional butressing by the formidable investigative forces that comprise the Southern California media market.

as will leitch once noted, it’s hard to take an investigation all that seriously when the journalistic institution in question requires an exclamation point at the end of its name. which isn’t to say what Yahoo! Sports is reporting is wrong, but the burden of proof is certainly on them at this point – not USC.

and when i see a host of unnamed sources and copy like “The NCAA’s investigation began in April 2006 and intensified after Yahoo! Sports reported allegations…” well, my critical journalist shields go up to full. which isn’t to say there is reason to believe this story is fabricated out of whole cloth but, rather, one should be very cautious in drawing conclusions from the information as it is being reported. assuming a specific coach will be implicated or a specific penalty will be incurred is inordinantly presumptive at this point.

by kleph on May 13, 2009 4:40 AM CDT reply actions

That may be true for the football side of things, but ESPN is the one that broke the basketball stories originally. The whole thing isn’t entirely Yahoo’s doing, and for what it’s worth, Yahoo says it has plenty of physical evidence (tapes, receipts, emails, etc) to back up its side.

by Year2 on May 13, 2009 6:22 AM CDT up reply actions

i fully agree...

… but my point being this is still a story hinging on pretty much a single news source. yahoo can have all the evidence in the world but it’s still doesn’t know what decisions the NCAA will make about the case. so making prognostications about the program’s fate at this point is vastly premature.

take this passage from today’s story in the reputable bastion of Southern California journalism, the Los Angeles Times (my emphasis):

If the NCAA finds truth in this and other allegations previously made by Johnson, USC could be hit with major sanctions, including forfeitures of victories, probation, a ban on postseason play, the loss of television appearances or scholarship and recruiting restrictions.

thats a pretty massive set of qualifiers attributed to a guy who plainly admits he has zero information on the actual information the NCAA is examining.

and, on a related note, why hasn’t anyone contacted the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI and IRS who have allegedly been informed of this transaction? the info is just thrown out there without nothing to back it up – not even the seemingly obligatory ‘no comment.’

Tim Floyd

I agree with kleph, especially about the latest news of Tim Floyd paying a handler of O.J. Mayo. The source is a third party, who by his own admission was not even there when the money was exchanged.

Furthermore, the source (Louis Johnson) has been interviewed several times before, making numerous allegations about USC and Mayo’s connection, but has never implicated Tim Floyd. I think it would be reasonable to question his veracity, especially because he clearly has an axe to grind over no longer being a part of Mayo’s entourage.

i’d say wait till they get their post up about the issue that they said they were working on.

the problem is all this is just rampant speculation over a minimum of facts. it’s useless and dumb. we don’t know what information the NCAA has, we don’t know what the NCAA will do. so discussing things like how long USC will be on probation and which pro team carroll will end up at is just ridiculous at this point.

and everyone needs to stop crediting these inquiries by other agencies until there is any verification they exist. all that we have is one guy saying he spoke to these agencies. you can call up the FBI and tell them there is a terrorist cow in your front yard and just because they call the loony bin to make sure you haven’t escaped doesn’t mean they are “investigating.”

They (the Incas themselves) but, someone did

I’ve been to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. What I saw was intense. In Cajamarca and Tecume are ruins, and not much left fully intact, but. . . .to say the Incas didn’t build pyramids is a stretch!

When I talk about the alignment (all Sun worshiping societies practically built temples and pyramids- I’ve been to the Valley of the Kings too) go here.

Someone put all those stones upon stones. Steps upon steps. Vantage points of unreal beauty. The practical spiritual center of Earth itself!

How long were you in Cusco? And the ruins of Cusco? Those are just a temples and buildings of reverence?

From the Mesa Verde, to Palenque, to Tikal, down through to Machu Picchu- whether it’s debatable or not, the alignment of these sites are uncanny.

the incas didn’t build pyramids. you’ve been watching too many indiana jones movies (which willfully confuse mayan and incan civilizations). the more distinctive architectural aspect of incan engineers is terracing but that’s due to the mountainous geography they worked in. the walls and such are battlements and most of the ruins are for sites of military importance – not religious. (the exception is machu picchu which is believed to be a royal retreat)

most of the sites were aligned in terms of irrigation. the complexity and sophistication of these water works is amazing. but there’s not a lot of the mystical mumbo jumbo all the hippies clutching their lonely planet guides gett all worked up about. in fact, even in nazca, the lines that get all the press aren’t nearly as impressive as the irrigation works located there as well.

by kleph on May 13, 2009 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Irrigation?

They had all the water they needed. And natural environments that pooled the water, which didn’t allow it to just go down stream.

As a retreat, the Inca still worshiped in the same vein as most Sun-centric societies.

Where is it that disproves the notion of Inca pyramids. The Empire stretched far below Machu Picchu.

tecume

and those other sites such as saipan in the north are from the moche culture – about 1,000 years before the incas. and works such as chan chan are the subsequent civilisation that emerged, the chimor.

not only are these substantially pre-inca, they are not located in the highlands. they are centered in the costal river valleys of the north. they also have no large-scale structures that would be equivilant to either he egyptian pyramids or the zuggurat construction typical of the mayans.

tecume and other ruins have smaller structures in evidence but these are believed to be the remains of the buildings and such of the city itself, not the classic idea of pyramid as a funeary or religious receptical. in fact, the most famous tomb – the lord of saipan (which the relics of are located in teh red museum on that page you linked) was found in a rather mundane hill that had covered the citadel-type structure he was entombed in.

more impressive is chan chan – one of the largest adobe/brick cities suriving from the ancient world. the technological expertise required to construct it is far beyond the rough structures at tecume you refer to as “pyramids.”

I never said the Incas built pyramids

The Incan Empire was a confederation of tribes organized by the nobility of their lineage. Machu Picchu is indeed a citadel/retreat, if you will, but the technology and materials utilized mirrored that of the way the Meso-American pyramids were built.

All I said was that the pyramids of most all (read: Aztec, Maya, Incan, etc) pointed in the lat/long direction of Machu Picchu. Now, the roads which you speak were too low to be used for irrigation. Think- the aqueducts of the Holy Roman Empire. These were indeed roads, they’re mere 4 foot lumps of impossibly correct symmetry, height, and fidelity to be ever considered useful for irrigation. (irrigation canals need “downsloping” in order for them to be utilitarian).

We can disagree on this, but to say the Inca didn’t build or have use for pyramids is a total stretch.

More on the roads

I’m not just talking about the obvious canals of Machu Picchu, which are legion. I’m talking about the vast points of distance between the Mesa Verde here in North American, following through, down, and into Mexico, stretching across the canal into South America and ending in Machu Picchu.

The roads in the Yucatan (of the EXACT same symmetry, height, and fidelity) point towards the road that links Paleque to Tikal and Tikal into South America.

Those roads. That alignment. Not just centered in and around Cuzco and Machu Picchu.

I think

most people know that i have no love for USC. I have always respected their ability to win football games but I have also been very curious in how Carrol was able to turn them around so quickly. That program went from terrible to BCS champs a little to fast….

That said, Yahoo seems to have a bug up their ass when it pertains to USC. ( which im glad someone does, cause the NCAA seems to have taken their sweet time coming around) I want them to fall as much as the next guy but its amazing how hard they have gone after em. (dont get me wrong im enjoying it) And If just half of these allegations come true….we might not hear from USC for a while. (which again is just fine with me)

And..if they do get hit..Carrol is gone. To the NFL….the SEC….somewhere but he won’t be stayin at SC. Actually if these allegations are true…it might be hard for him to get a job. IF he had to cheat to be successful then im not sure he’s worth the risk. He wasn’t all that great in the NFL and this isn’t going to help his rep.

Question…if they get busted…do they have to give up all their Championships, Heismans, wins etc since Carroll got there?

By cheating, you mean. . . . ?

I’m not trying to dismiss anything what you’ve written bammer, but so far- as it applies to USC football here’s the lowdown from someone who really has been paying attention to this matter since it broke:

Reggie Bush, with some encouragement/involvement with his parents, struck up a relationship with Lloyd Lake (a known ex-Crip, with lotsa money) down in San Diego (not Los Angeles, not USC campus, etc). Lloyd Lake overwhelmed Bush and parents with “friendly” gifts and perks (dinner at 5-star restaurants, flight/hotel arrangements for away games and some post-season awards circuit for Reggie). Lake introduced family to Michael Ornstein who allegedly agreed to pay for mortgage in well-to-do neighborhood that family had been living in on their own for the previous 5 years but were getting behind on and needing some help. All this was supposedly being don with the “nod and a wink” suggestion that Reggie Bush would help Lloyd Lake by becoming his ONE AND ONLY client at his NOT EVEN REGISTERED, LOCATED, OR OPEN phantom sports/entertainment rep agency.

Reggie balked, and backed off- but not until AFTER he had paid back Ornstein for the help in mortgage payments and after he tried to give Lloyd Lake back a few $ thousand dollars for him to stop hanging around him. In a circumstance that didn’t play out in an open court, however both parties had independent representation- the Bush family paid back Ornstein $300,000 dollars. Lloyd Lake got none of that money.

I, introduce to you now, the publicity of Lloyd Lake.

That’s where we are at with Reggie and have been since the news of all this has broken.

So I ask, not patronizingly, but still: where did Coach Carroll cheat?

I'd be careful with that...

That program went from terrible to BCS champs a little to fast….

I’d be careful with saying that. USC went from 5-7 in Paul Hackett’s final year, to 6-6 in Carroll’s first year. In Carroll’s second year, they went 11-2, made a BCS game, and never looked back. Compare that to Alabama, who went 6-7 in Shula’s final year, to 6-6 in Saban’s first year, and then moving to 12-2 and making a BCS game the following year and (hopefully) never looking back after that.

What Carroll did at USC seems to be getting almost exactly mirrored at Alabama with Saban, so again I’d be careful with that assumption.

don't you think

that was going through my mind as i read that….and don’t you think that the thought of how Saban has done what hes dont without cheating hasn’t rolled around in my head a few times….

I love Saban as much as the next guy but what he’s done so quickly is just as impressive as what Carrol has and it scares the crap out of me….and makes me giddy at the same time..

Well i did say IF...
If any of these allegations of Coach Floyd giving Guilllory $1K in Vegas and the pic of Ornstein and Lake with Coach Carroll hold true, coupled with what we already know with what allegedly took place with both Bush (payments to parents, mortgage, and fly-Impala) and Mayo ($30K over a 4 year period, Guillory gaining carte blanche "access" to USC basketball facilities, locker room, and games, Mayo’s connection to BDA Sports Agency). . . . .we ARE GONNA GET STOMPED!

Ill say this Bix, i don’t know all the information..All i know is from what i read…well its seems that Carrol might be in trouble with some pics of him with Ornstien….im not sure what all that means but it sounds like Carrol knew a little if not a lot about what was going on, hence the lack of institutional control….so my comment about IF he cheated isn’t about spying on other teams practices or stealing signals….he MIGHT have known one of his star players was getting paid (or that his family was getting the Benjamins) that my dear friend is cheating in my book. OF course there is a gigantic IF in all of that…

I may be wrong, but...

Question…if they get busted…do they have to give up all their Championships, Heismans, wins etc since Carroll got there?

I may be wrong here, but I don’t think they would have to give up too much. The Bush payment, to the best of my knowledge, didn’t occur until after the 2004 season had ended, and he left early for the NFL Draft after the 2005 season, so only the 2005 season would probably be fair game for being vacated. That would take away 11 wins for USC, a Pac 10 title, and Reggie would probably lose his Heisman too.

The picture doesn't show much. . .

. . .other than the fact that Ornstein and Lake (Ornstein is a well-known sports agent and shouldn’t have been allowed access. ‘For all intents and purposes, up until the Reggie Bush scandal hit the public, Coach Carroll allowed for a bit of leniency on “professionals” in and around Heritage Hall and on the sidelines. it was a “feel good” time back then. Not so much anymore. There’s tight security with driver’s licenses and “who do you know, why are you here” questions/interview BEFORE allowing access to practices now. I should know, I’ve been “shaken down” and fingerprinted 7 times attending practice. And I used to work for Coach Chris Carlisle!!!).

So yeah bammer, it would show “lack of control” on Coach Carrolls part- which is hella damaging. You see, people have this pretty picture of our coach. He’s like Peter Pan or something? After his tirade following Mark Sanchez’s decision to go pro and all this “access” brouhaha, hardcore fans are only now questioning his methods and veracity. For better or for worse.

REASONS: 1. USC is Hollywood. Come on, the NCAA is star struk. And have you seen Kiffin’s wife?
 2. NCAA hates Saban and Alabama.

By the way I wouldn’t bet anything that they even lose 2 scholarships.

I don’t think the NCAA would have done anything if Yahoo hadn’t been on them. Now they will feel they have to give a wrist slap.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

ESPN has

now picked it up. Mike and Mike and 1st take…

‘When you build a house and you make it hurricane-proof by putting certain kinds of windows in it, and use cement instead of stick construction and all that kind of stuff, you’re getting prepared for what? A hurricane that may or may never every come." ’We’re going to have 12 hurricanes next year, we know they’re coming.’
- Coach Nick Saban

by bammer on May 13, 2009 9:27 AM CDT reply actions

Well...

… ESPN couldn’t really ignore this one a whole lot longer.

Some people like to think that ESPN is just taking it easy on USC, but I don’t think that’s it. ESPN generally doesn’t like to report — i.e. publicize — anything that they cannot themselves take credit for, and they generally avoid stories originally reported by rival outfits (SI, Yahoo, etc.) for as long as they can. I think that’s largely been the deal in this case, but again you can really ignore it for only so long.

If USC is required to vacate the 2004 season MNC...

no one is going to have a problem with Auburn sliding on up into that empty slot, right?

by War Eagle Atlanta on May 13, 2009 9:45 AM CDT reply actions

Well I don't think the 2004 season is on the table here, but IF...

That would depend on the terminology the NCAA uses. If USC is forced to FORFEIT their title then, yes, Auburn would get it because they finished #2 in the BCS standings. If USC were to VACATE their title (as is far more likely) then there just wouldn’t be a champion for 2004. That’s what happened recently with South Carolina (I believe) and their vacated Track & Field title.

But realistically, we’re only talking about 2005 here (for football anyway), so that’s not going to happen.

by rugman11 on May 13, 2009 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Not happening either way...

The NCAA doesn’t really make you forfeit anything anymore, now they just make you vacate things.

by outsidethesidelines on May 13, 2009 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Who said forfeit?

They make you vacate the victories. What’s the difference? The team you orignally beat doesn’t get a win for the game they lost. They still get that loss, but your victory is removed.

I think the 2004 season IS in play, from previous reports into the RBI (Reggie Bush Incident)

I’ve always contended that a vacated MNC is too big a void to be left unfilled.

by War Eagle Atlanta on May 13, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Now that I look at it,

the NCAA doesn’t name a champion in D-1 football, they just recognize the BCS Champion. So it would be up to the BCS as to whether they want to strip USC of their 2004 title and put Auburn in their place. I would think the NCAA would then recognize the new champ. Either way, it’s all academic because it’s not going to happen.

Reggie Bush and his associates have handled any of this. I really didn’t like how his bodyguard flashed a gun at Lake’s deposition.

You can’t do that. That’s seedy, ghetto B.S. and it has no place in the legal world. They need to drag Reggie Bush in there and make him testify, and they need to protect every informant from Bush’s hired thugs who will try to intimidate them from testifying.

you know what’s funny – when my wife and I went to the Bahamas on our honeymoon, all the bus drivers would honk obnoxiously at any decent looking female that walked by. There are a lot of people walking around downtown Nassau during the day so you can imagine the constant horn honking that took place. It reminded me of that scene in Waynes World 2 when Garth was at the club and carrying on a conversation and every girl that walked by got a “schwing.”

actually, i'm on deadline and sick as a dog...

…but this kind of journalism really gets my goat. i’ve read through the analysis in the wake of the jayson blaire and janet cooke scandals and they always insist the need for accountability in primary sourcing, robust confirmation from secondary sources and nailing down the details completely. this story fails on all counts.

it’s essentially a one source effort and we’re supposed to take the word of this witness hook line an sinker. who saw the envelope? he did. who called the feds? he did. who is giving all the detial of the scandal? he is. don’t think this is a recipe for disaster? just ask los angeles times pulitzer prize winning reporter chuck philips about that.

but the fact it’s “out there” seems to give everybody carte blanche to simply run off at loose ends with ever frickin hypothetical scenario they can come up with. it’s baseless and farfetched – but part of the normal discourse due to the subject of the initial story and their blase attitude to sourcing the thing themselves (someone else will take care of that. right?)

i think we as alabama fans have had our fill of ever tinpot pundits bemoaning the horrid state of our program due to allegations and conjecture about the fates we are about to incur. it doesn’t help anyone get to the bottom of the mess and it’s usually little more than a means of painting your foe with a tarred brush of moral rectitude while keeping your own self oh-so-far above the fray.

usc might be guilty of all the accusations. this guy might be telling the truth. and the ncaa might be ready to bring down the banhammer of rightiousness. but this story isn’t going to be a vehicle for any of that, it’s just an excuse for folks to moan on about something else while we wait for this interminable off-season to end.

You just sound…different today/yesterday – I don’t mean that in a negative way.

but the tone is likely because this touches on a sore point with me. there is just too much journalism that gets by with knowingly casting aspersions but covering its ass at the same time. i've never been comfortable with it and i get downright pissed when it does the kind of damage we see happening here.

usc might be completely innocent, they might not. but they’ve already been convicted to a certain degree by the fact there is this kind of debate over this story. i’ve seen this same bullshit affect Alabama and i take no joy seeing it happen elsewhere.
