The NCAA will announce Thursday that the Alabama football team must vacate all wins in 2005 through 2007 that included players involved in violations of textbook disbursement policy, a person with knowledge of the ruling said.
That number is at least 10, another source said. Alabama will not have to give up its 2007 win over Tennessee or its bowl win that season.
The penalties do not include scholarship losses for football, the sources said.
Emphasis mine, natch, but take this with a grain of salt since the university is not allowed to discuss the ruling until the NCAA has made a formal announcement. I doubt Ian would cite a "person with knowledge of the ruling" without them actually being, you know, a person that would have knowledge of the ruling, but considering the tight seal the university has kept on this whole affair, loose lips wagging now just doesn't seem right. Fingers crossed that this is the extent of the sanctions, though, since "vacated" wins are a farce (we'll all remember who won those games) and zero scholarships lost is the best news we could possibly get.

Thought on vacated wins...
I have no clue how the vacated wins are going to be calculated. From the 2005 season to the night before the 2007 Tennessee game, we won 20 football games. So the question becomes who played in what games, and at exactly what point did the five athletes in question become ineligible.
Antoine Caldwell played in every game from 2005 up ’til the suspensions. Glen Coffee played in all twelve in 2005, none in 2006 (knee injury), and the first five wins in 2007 up ’til the suspensions. Marlon Davis played in five games in 2005 (all wins), every 2006 game (except the Vandy win), and all the pre-Tennessee 2007 games. Chris Rogers did not play in any game in 2005, played in all 13 in 2006, and all the pre-Tennessee 2007 games. Marquis Johnson did not play in any game in 2005, but played in all in 2006 and the pre-Tennessee 2007 games.
So, yeah, if Ian is reporting at least ten are gone, hopefully that means that the only ineligible guys in 2005 were Marquis Johnson and Chris Rogers. If Caldwell did the deed in 2005, though, you would think it would be a lot more vacated wins that ten. That said, though, I honestly have no understanding whatsoever as to what the guiding principle is in all of this for the NCAA.
At any rate, though, as a preview for later, I will add that I think we would have a very good chance of getting the vacated wins back via appeal.

And as another note...
The 2007 Tennessee win may be protected, but that is not necessarily to say the 2005 Tennessee win is, and the same goes for the 2005 Florida win, plus the 2006 Cotton Bowl.
Hopefully we can somehow hang on to those four even now, before the appeal, but we’ll see. Being brutally honest, we were so shitty the rest of the time that most of the “wins” were over the likes of East Popcorn State, so it doesn’t really matter.
I will say it would be nice to keep 2007 Arkansas and 2007 Ole Miss, but if the vacated wins bit is true, there’s no way in hell we hang onto those. Clearly all five players were ineligible at that point, and all five played.

I don't give a shit what the NCAA says,
the 2005 Tennessee game was the second game I ever attended (1st being 2005 So. Miss and “The Catch”) and remains, to date, one of the most thrilling games I’ve seen. I’ve never heard BDS as loud as it was when that fumble went out of the end zone or when Christiansen hit the game-winner. It may have been ugly, but that 6-3 win will always be a win in my book.

The NCAA...
…can go ahead and vacate all our wins, deny our SEC and national titles, and pretend Coaches Wade, Thomas, Bryant, and Stallings never existed for all I care.

Good and Bad
At least this won’t affect the future of the program unless some other dinky violation comes up in the next three years.
On the bad side, Shula’s only good season will be diminished, and Saban’s “official” first year record could be 2-10.

One more note...
… Ian is saying at least 10 vacated wins from 2005-2007 (sans the 2007 UT game and the Independence Bowl).
However, the Tuscaloosa News report is saying at least ten wins vacated from 2006-2007. Obviously that would leave all of the 2005 wins intact.
I will add that from 2006 to the Tennessee game in 2007, we won 11 games. Six wins came in 2006, five more came in 2007. Maybe 11 will be the magic number, then, but we’ll see. I wonder if they would make us vacate even to Western Carolina? Maybe so, but that would be unbelievably absurd, so we’ll see.
Anyway, the point is that the 2005 wins may not be in play here.

And one more thought...
… maybe there is another football player out there who was ineligible that we do not know about. I’m not saying I know that, it’s just a random thought, and I imagine that it could be a possibility. Perhaps the NCAA chose to accept the punishment for the five players in question, but maybe someone who graduated after the 2006 got the benefit of the textbooks deal, but was no longer around to punish the following year. Don’t get me wrong, again I have no knowledge whatsoever of it, but I guess it’s at least possible that a guy like Juwan Simpson or Terrance Jones could have been in on part of this even then.
Again, I have no knowledge or anything of the sort, I’m just throwing it out there as food for thought.

The NCAA knows...
…we will show up on their doorstep with pitchforks and torches no matter what they do. I’d wait to get totally wrapped around the axle until the appeals are finalized.
Hell, those sneaky bastards could be baiting us into appealing just so they seem benevolent when they “allow” us to keep our wins. All in an effort to drop kick us through the goalposts of oblivion the next time something happens…
…OK that is a little far fetched…

Honestly, I won't be pissed if we vacate wins.
As OTS said, it’s essentially a meaningless punishment (unless you’re Bobby Bowden), and I would just as soon lose every win from 2005-2007 than lose scholarships. Like Todd (I think) said, everyone knows who really one those games.

Oh I agree
I am saying no matter how “we” feel about it, it ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings. No reason to be pissed or content, until we know the final verdict.

in seriousness
wow, me actually serious?
Me, Nick Saban, and everyone else doesn’t give a damn about those wins. There were no rings in those seasons so they DONT MATTER. Saban does not care what his overall win record looks like. All Saban cares about is the current year and NEXT YEAR. This isn’t going to effect our recruiting? This isn’t going to keep us from a bowl game?
I hope this is ture.

Hahahaha that's fitting since neither team deserved to win. FINALLY the NCAA got something right!

Haha, a tie with FSU
Yeah, I agree, vacated wins doesn’t mean a whole lot from that time period. Unless you’re a big picture kind of guy worried about our all-time wins. Especially since the games we won were fair and square except for Glen or Marlon having an extra study guide for Math 112. It will just be an asterisk in the record books like 1993.

I went to that game...
…the first half seemed to take about 3 days, in the blazing heat.
Easily the worst game I have attended. I was at the UH loss in Aloha Stadium, and this years Sugar Bowl, so I have some pretty bad ones to chose from…
I almost got kill at that UH game, but then the second half happened…
