Alabama Eighth in College Football Revenue
The University of Alabama football program ranked No. 8 in Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal's list of college football revenue producers for 2007-08. The magazine based its findings on Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act documents filed by each school to the U.S. Department of Education. Alabama also ranked 8th in total sports revenue, raking in a total of $88.87 million.
The list of top ten college football revenue producers is after the jump:
- University of Texas - $72.95 million
- University of Georgia - $67.05 million
- University of Florida - $66.1 million
- Ohio State University - $65.16 million
- Notre Dame University - $59.77 million
- Auburn University - $59.67 million
- University of Michigan - $57.46 million
- University of Alabama - $57.37 million
- Penn State University - $53.76 million
- Louisiana State University - $52.68 million

I
would expect us to move up that list after the stadium expansion is completed. Five of the top 10 in that list are SEC schools, not surpising but still impressive.

Couple of thoughts...
Keep in mind that these figures are for the 2007-2008 season (i.e. Saban’s first year), not last year.
Anyway, a couple of thoughts about the disparity… For one, you guys had one more home game than we did in 2007, and the bowl payout was higher for the Peach Bowl than it was for the Independence Bowl. The Peach Bowl pays out over three million per team these days, but the Independence Bowl barely gets a million (and actually I don’t think you get that any more since they have had a lot of trouble finding a sponsor).

BINGO!
And they’ve done a great job of ruining the pageantry of the bowl to sell more waffle fries.

I
bought my copy at the Bryant Museum. It was the last copy they had. Destiny shined on me, oh and Bama won that day.

Damn, not bad...
That’s not too bad, especially for a 7-6 team currently on its way to back-to-back trips to Shreveport. Furthermore, that really shows you the impact of Saban’s arrival to UA. If I remember correctly, our football program generated “only” 45 million in revenue in 2006-2007.
I do wonder, though, what the hell is going on with LSU? “Only” 52 million despite winning the national championship?

Alabama
has played on TV a lot the last few years (especially CBS). Think that could be the difference?
"A demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." -H. L. Mencken
No...
I’m pretty sure that the TV contract revenue is divvied up pretty evenly regardless of who is playing on what channel and at what time, so that shouldn’t be it.
With Saban’s arrival, I think it’s just simple… more merchandise being sold, tickets selling for higher prices, alumni donations being higher, etc. It’s just an across-the-board rise in essentially every revenue stream.

That's
not bad, just $10 over the whole season.

Yeah, no big deal...
… in terms of raising ticket prices. It’ll literally make a few dollars difference to each season ticket holder.
I will say, though, it is impressive how we are able to raise ticket prices any. Most schools are really cutting ticket prices in this economy just to put butts in the seat. I think it says a lot that the possibility of raising prices is even on the table.

Interesting correlation
between the top 10 football schools versus the “poorest” states in America, on a median household income basis.
Only Penn St. and UGA break into the top half of the list.
Alabama (not surprisingly) is near the very bottom
You
can support any argument known to man with correlational data, just ask Al Gore.

You'd think...
Alabama and Auburn both would rank ahead of Texas.
After spending seven wondrous years in the state of Alabama, never in my life have I seen fans, who claim to be loyal to one team, spend more time AUbsessing over the other more so than they do their very own.
Dont mess with Texas
Does this count booster donations? They got some rich folks with more money than they know what to do with in Texas.

True
but so does T A&M. Also ‘Bama has by far the largest endowment in the state (and thats not ’pooling’ UAB and UAH, thats UA alone), so they got some rich folks too.
