OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! NICK SABAN VS BILL CURRY!!1111

Curryvssaban_medium
...or, Get Your Bricks Ready People

As Ian helpfully reminds us, lost in the shuffle of the San Jose State announcement yesterday is the fact the Crimson Tide will be welcoming Georgia State to Bryant-Denny as well. Why is this important? Because Bill Curry is their head coach, and he's all excited about the opportunity:

"It's been a great motivator for our staff," Curry said, "and it will be a great motivator for our players. The opportunity to go into that environment and see how football is played at that level will be quite a learning experience."

Considering Curry didn't really seem to grasp how football is played at this level while actually at this level, I'm sure it will be quite a learning experience for him.

I'm glad

The University is atleast trying to add a little flavor to our cupcake games now.

Ummmmm........Are we still Alabama?

Are you freaking kidding me? Georgia freaking State? This is the biggest p*ssy move I have ever seen us pull. They created their football team this past off season! I went to night school getting my MBA the past three years and their “captain” asked me to come try out. This will not even be a contest. We better have USC in LA later on that season. Otherwise our SOS is going to be putrid. San Jose State and Georgia State (if they still have a team). Puke.

Or....

Penn State earlier that season….

by bamabrian on Jun 17, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

No excuse

Penn State? Seriously?

That is our defense for scheduling a program that has been in existence for a total of four months as of right now. Who knows? Joe Pa might still be around coaching from the press box still.

There is no defending the Georgia State scheduling. I live in Atlanta, and went to school there after graduating from Alabama, so I know first hand how horrible they are going to be. They don’t even have a practice facility as of right now. They share a practice field with a freaking high school.

I think it is a shame for any BCS school to schedule a Div I-AA opponent. The UT-Chattanooga game this season is another fine example of that. They almost disbanded their team last season. Under no circumstances should we be playing these type of teams. Not with the talent Saban is bringing in and Championships we are hopefully going to try and win.

We lose one game in 2010 and we are done with that projected SOS.

We should be scheduling like UGA did this season. Their OCS is at Oklahoma State week 1, Arizona State week 4, and at Georgia Tech to cap this off after the SEC gauntlet. Now that is a man schedule.

Obviously I am wrong.....

….and apologize. After further discussions with some fellow fans, and obvious support for it on this website, it seems like I am in the minority and overreacting to this game. I will learn to “enjoy” these type of games as one person stated, to look forward to a guaranteed victory vs a lessor opponent at homecoming as another said, but most importantly, I should feel good about our program making their contribution to the rest of college football and helping Bill Curry and Georgia State build their program.

I can’t believe that I have had this all twisted backwards in mind my for so long.

by Tomahawk Tide on Jun 17, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yea. I was just reminded....

that we also play an “improving” Duke squad on the road that season on top of the San Jose / Ga State tilts as well. I was way out of line.

I'm with you

We should never, ever, ever, schedule anything other than 1A opponents. I didn’t even like it when we were in the worst years of probation. Now that we’re expecting to compete for championships on a yearly basis again, no way.

Dear Bill Curry,

Boom! Roasted.

If we are going to prop up a team like this....

It should be Joey Jones’ team at South Alabama. There is simply no way we should have scheduled this team regardless of who the coach is. I’m alright with the rest of the teams on schedule, and think it will be fun to fill Duke’s HS-like stadium, but Ga St? come on.

I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

I do have to agree

even though I like our 10 schedule – Penn State, what! – but I would like us playing more in-state teams in cupcake games. Well, after we get our revenge against LaMonroe. I know why we don’t play UAB, etc., just don’t understand why.

UAB

I’ve no interest in playing the Blazers, if only because of Bartow’s words against Bear (yes i hold a grudge), but the rest of the state schools would be okay. And if we are going to prop up a newly created team, i think it should be South.
In fact if we are going to play a smaller school like this, and it’s not going to be Joey Jone’s team, i’d rather play a historically black college, if only for the band at half-time.

Aw, come on now

Bill Curry wasn’t that bad! [/obligatory Auburn fan reaction]

by JCCW Jerry on Jun 18, 2009 5:19 AM CDT reply actions

We should welcome Bill back with a big ole hug!

Before we kick his team’s big ole ask! I liked Bill Curry. He was a good coach, and the Tide won under him. He could not beat Auburn, though, and history shows this is fatal to any Alabama coach.

by OldBamaMan on Jun 18, 2009 7:54 AM CDT reply actions

What!?

You mean Curry schedules Alabama instead of Auburn? I take that to mean he thinks he can win this game.

by troy145 on Jun 18, 2009 9:32 AM CDT reply actions

I don't have any real verification of this...

….so maybe someone can fill us in, but wasn’t there some sort of gentleman’s agreement between Alabama and Auburn to not play UAB and Troy?

by Todd on Jun 18, 2009 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Not possible...

…there are no gentlemen at Auburn.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Jun 18, 2009 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

it mustve just been Bama and Aub

cus everyone in Troy wants to play them. Especially Auburn since Troy has been the second best football team in the state for a while

but seriously, folks...

what are the odds that Curry is still coaching there in 2010?

This will be Curry's re-return

the first was with Kentucky in like 1996 I think. Not a fan of scheduling this Georgia State game.
