Your RBR Word of the Day: hortatory
hortatory \HOR-tuh-tor-ee\, adjective:
Marked by strong urging; serving to encourage or incite; as, "a hortatory speech."

Saban's screaming, arguing, and hortatory gestures are a welcome sight to those who longed for a show of passion on the sidelines during the Shula years.

Im gonna be honest here
I hated playing for guys like Saban. I understand sometimes you have to yell to get your point across and trust me i got my butt chewed more than a few times for doing bone headed stuff….I just was never motivated by it. When my O-line coach would grab my facemask and call me everything but a white boy…all the while spitting his newly packed skoal in my face….it never made me want to play harder…it annoyed me. I saw him break a few players to tears but he just pissed me off….on the flip side a guy like Shula makes you want to take a nap..so…
Dont get me wrong, i would have loved to play for Saban but thats because of his X’s and O’s, not his approach.

There
are certainly different coaching styles and personalities that have all been successful so there’s no one “right way.” I can definitely see how you would have to put your ego in your back pocket playing for a coach like that.

I hear you, bammer
I like a fiery coach, as long as there’s a purpose. IMO, a coach should very rarely direct his anger on a player (or even another coach); if he’s pissed and looking for a scapegoat, than attack an opponent. Coaches should only yell at their players when necessary.
If a guy is trying his best and he messes up, screaming at him is useless. If a guy is dogging it, then maybe something should be said and everyone will understand. But I hate coaches who yell just to yell. I hate it when they yell because someone missed a minor assignment or was confused about something and messed up in practice. Most players know what they did wrong when they make a mistake. All screaming, ‘What the F*** were you thinking you stupid pussy?’ does is create negative energy (and often times, resentment from the player). I used to get pissed when I felt like one of those coaches was giving me grief when I hadn’t done anything to deserve it. I never said anything back and I took it, but I don’t respect those guys and if I saw them today I wouldn’t say a word to them.
Some of those guys are just assholes. No one likes an asshole.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
