Party Like It's 1973
Since we're now 73 days away from kicking off the new season with Virginia Tech, it seems like an appropriate time to look back at our 1973 game with VPI. On October 27th the Hokies rolled into Tuscaloosa to take on the Tide. When the dust had settled, the final score was 77-6. (Which in fairness to them was six points more than Auburn scored on us that year.)
The Crimson Tide set new NCAA rushing and total yardage records that day, racking up 748 yards on the ground with four different players rushing for more than 100 yards--James Taylor, Wilbur Jackson, Calvin Culliver and Richard Todd. We only completed four passes out of seven on the day. It;s also worth noting that our total of 77 points and 833 yards total offense was reached despite three turnovers. As we only put up 7 points in the fourth quarter it could have been a lot worse...
So bring on the Hokies again. I can't wait!

wow..
Interesting post. That was a serious beating. I hope we can VT that would get us off to great start. However, I believe this is going to be a tough game.

Roll Wishbone
I think I read somewhere one time that Coach Bryant played every single dressed out player in that game.

Simply amazing...
…especially considering we were more so considered a “defensive team” during the Bryant era.
After spending seven wondrous years in the state of Alabama, never in my life have I seen fans, who claim to be loyal to one team, spend more time AUbsessing over the other more so than they do their very own.

Offense in '73
That year was definitely an exception to the “defensive team” image, although the defense was not exactly shabby—only UT (21) and Notre Dame (24 in that @#$#$* Sugar Bowl) scored more than 14 points.
But the offense….they averaged 39.75 points per game (and still over 36 even if you throw out the Virginia Tech score). They scored 35 or more in eight of the twelve games. Their low for the year was 21 against LSU. Pretty powerful stuff. There’s no doubt in my mind that had they beaten Notre Dame, we’d be talking about that as perhaps the greatest Bama team ever.
