somewhat of a Ford fanboy and they are making some decent stuff these days that isn’t four wheel drive.

Obviously you can’t go wrong with a Honda/Acura, they are near or at the top of the quality rankings year after year. JD Power just released its quality rankings for 2009 and Ford and GM did quite well. I believe that although there may still be somewhat of a “gap” between imports and domestics, the gap has closed significantly. And IMO, certain imports makes/models are living off of a reputation they built 20 years ago, that may not still be deserved today. Its difficult to reinvent yourself in the auto industry. Once people have made up their minds about you, its extremely hard to change their minds, no matter what empirical data you put in their face. Its not impossible either, see Hyundai.
