Don't Yield to Fatigue... Get a Lift with Camel!

Camelad_medium

I stumbled across this phenomenal ad for Camel cigarettes digging through the University of Alabama Library's online digital archive. This is from the university humor magazine/student newspaper Rammer Jammer in anticipation of the football team's appearance in the 1935 Rose Bowl. Which explains the emphasis on Cliff Montgomery who was MVP in Colombia University's upset of Stanford the year prior.

God, I love smoking. I miss it so much.

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Smoking Camels to get a "lift"

People back then weren’t very smart

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for my afternoon Red Bull.

Here's my take on smoking

All of the women in my mother’s family have endured (and most have died from) colon cancer. Knowing this, my mother spent her life eating (and making me eat, for the longest time) tasteless, ultra-healthy meals that would rid our bodies of carcinogens and other toxins. She also exercised 4 or more times a week.

Five years ago my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, and now that she is about 70, the cancer has spread into her lungs. The doctors have said it is Stage IV, incurable, since it has metasticized through her lymph nodes.

I don’t want to further advocate smoking and eating poorly, but I’m of the mind that thinks some things (like hereditary diseases) are more powerful than any preventive measures we can take. So smoke your cigarettes and enjoy your Red Bull.

Of course, one could also argue that my mother would not be approaching her 70th birthday and doing so well, despite her terminal status (she still gets around better than most 50 year olds) if she had followed my advice.

Emphysema...

…is not a hereditary disease. But as far as the Red Bull, go for it.

processed sugar, and High Fructose Corn Syrup

are really bad for you to. humans had never been exposed to these things until the last couple hundred years or so, until then we got our sugars directly from plants without removing and isolating just the sweetest parts… i’m not sure how much i believe but as a “progressive” of course i have a bunch of hippie herbalist friends who swear that processed sugar is one of the worst things humans can eat.

so anyway i try to use stuff like honey and agave nectar for receipes and never buy crap w/ HFCS in it… and i only smoke when i’m drunk off my butt.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

Camel’s “energizing effect” has been confirmed by science. Smoke all you want. Camels never jangle your nerves.

There are so many other awesome lines in this ad, but that has got to be my favorite. Thanks Kleph, I needed a good laugh today.

my favorite was the quote from the sportswriter: “I smoke at least two packs a day and they never interfere with my nerves.

when i was smoking two packs of camels a day i was a jittery nervous mess.

Don’t you mean you had jangled nerves?

by Jumpn_JackFlash on Jun 29, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

lets just say it was probably better for everyone that i quit.

A jittery, nervous mess you say?

Tempebama knows a guy in Montego Bay that could help you out with that.

Reminds me of this bit by Steve Martin:

“I used to smoke……. marijuana!

But I’ll tell you something………. I would only smoke it in the late evening.

Oh, occasionally the early evening, but usually the late evening – or the mid-evening.

Just the early evening, midevening and late evening."

Occasionally, early afternoon, early mid-afternoon, or perhaps the late-midafternoon.

Oh, sometimes the early-mid-late-early morning. . . But never at dusk! Never at dusk, I would never do that.

While I'm winning 6 National Championships in 24 years

I smoke Chesterfields.

I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey.

the chesterfield ads were pretty impressive as well, but not absolutely epic like this one.

see

he’s taking a deep drag, and about to hold it in. there’s prolly a reason chesterfields got pulled from the market, they were too full of hippie lettuce and awesome.

Great post and thread

for the year!! I have been smoking for a while….12 yrs in the military. We do pt at least 3 times a week. Now, I don’t advocate smoking for anyone else, but I absolutely enjoy smoking…especially while I’m doing convoys in Iraq. It’s pretty bad when your call sign is “Smokey Joe”.
