I'm sure there are a lot of you who know this already thanks to our friend Twitter... but my time at The Birmingham News is coming to an end.
Recently, I accepted the job of lead Patriots beat reporter for The Boston Herald.
Ian Rapoport leaving the Birmingham News to cover the New England Patriots. Going from Saban to Belichick... he's a glutton for punishment.

Terrible...
I know a lot of Alabama fans don’t like Ian, but he really is a nice guy and has always been very friendly to us, even agreeing to do something for Yea Alabama. I’ll certainly miss having that inside connection.

True...
… and though, just being honest, he does come off as a bit of a cunt, you can make a valid argument that doing just that is effectively his job.

Then...
…he has a really sh#tty job.
He seems like he may be a ‘nice guy’, and I’m sorry you’ve lost a connection. I just grew weary of his lack of professionalism — it was like reading a high school editorial. I don’t wish him ill…I’m just looking forward to not reading what he writes.

You're right...
…but you may have noticed I sometimes have a difficult time skipping over things written about Alabama football.

His
blog was kinda lame. Always making reference to the “banktress” and witty photo captions like “Julio…doin’ his thing.”

His Blog
Was the only Alabama Newspaper Blog that actually was a blog, and not a rehash of what was already in the paper and online.
I’ve never met the guy, I don’t know him, but i don’t understand why so many people don’t like, what to my mind was the best Bama Beat Report not named Cecil. Would you guys rather have a bunch of yesmen like Auburn? The guy asked tough questions, and from what i could tell, Coach Saban enjoyed the give and take with him.
Good luck in Boston, Ian.
I liked his captions/pictures.
I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

agreed
i liked the coverage rapport gave and i’m very confident that Saban and he are actually on good terms, Saban is a prick because it’s his job to be one, Rapport asks questions that make good coaches uncomfortable because thats his job. they have a professional respect for one another no doubt.
i know one guy though who’d make an amazing replacement for Ian and i think we should get the campaign started though… Kleph for Beat Reporter. i dont know if the world and all the goons on Al.com can handle that much awesomeness and truth so soon, it might overwhelm them all.

I'm gonna have to 2nd
the Kleph nomination. I really like his style, and would make a good beat reporter for the Tide. I guess you could say I’m being a homer, but maybe we could get him away from Peru.

thanks guys but sorry,
my stuff on alabama football is strictly as a non-professional. i’ll defer to the sage words of hunter s. thompson to describe the reason why:
“It’s a bit like fucking — which is fun only for amateurs. Old whores don’t do much giggling. Nothing is fun when you have to do it — over and over, again and again — or else you’ll be evicted, and that gets old.”

Nice....lol
Well…I mainly stick to RBR anyway. I’ll check out the other places from time to time. So, as long as your still doin your thing on here….cool

i'm blown away
by the comments i see from readers of the Rapsheet blog… i’ve lived in a few different cities and have seen and read my fair share of writers in different markets. rapport is a good reporter, some of our fans are just really out in left field with all the vitriol they throw his way.

I'll...
…agree with that, which is why I recommend you refrain from reading the comments on those blogs. We get a little out of hand here, but the comments there quickly devolve into something worse than our worse moments, and on a regular basis.
And I would have thought you would have said ‘really out in right field’.

+1
the comments on al.com in general will make you lose faith in humanity. I don’t think the stupidity is exclusive to Bama fans.

I thought he did a good job
He was right on top of everything and Saban seemed to enjoy taking him on. He wasn’t a cheap shot artist either. I doubt we end up with someone as good in that job.

Was
he the one that kept calling him “Nick?” And then Cecil Hurt told him to stop it, and to at least call him Coach Saban.

I can't imagine anyone not liking him....
He is by far the best blogger I have ever read. He is creative and funny. He is informed and, as someone already mentioned he isn’t a yes man, so you know you can trust what he reports. And for those who are not aware, Coach Saban told him to call him Nick. And really, why is it anyone’s business what he calls him? Why do we assume that Coach Saban can’t let him know if it is a problem? In my experience, assertiveness doesn’t really seem to be a problem for Saban.
As for it being like a high school editorial, a blog isn’t supposed to read like an article. It is a blog. It is pretty much supposed to be laid back, tongue in cheek, funny or whatever else may reflect the personality of the author. Just my opinion. And we all have them. I respect those of you who do not like Ian’s reporting. But I don’t think anyone will ever replace him in my book.
Still, we all are rooting for the same team. Roll Tide! 57 days…

I liked ole Ian
Those complaining about his blog…did you ever read his columns? He didn’t report in that manner. that was a blog, meant to be light hearted and ‘hip’. yeah, he was corny at times, but the guy got it done and was pretty darn intelligent. Cecil is BY FAR my favorite, but Ian was young and talented, regardless of what you may or may not think. I am really scared to think of who we may get now…if they were smart, they would make a deal with the Tuscaloosa News and let us use Cecil lol.
Anyway, best of luck, Ian, you will be extremely successful and we will miss messing with you down here!
