I am a Michael Jackson fan [pre-1993]

My name is Jeremy.  I am 30 years old, married with two dogs, a house, and a great job.  But I have a confession.  I am a Michael Jackson fan.  Sure, I ignore the last fifteen or so weird ass years, but the guy was talented, and upon his death, I flocked to iTunes and bought the 25th anniversary Thriller album - which, BTW, i had in glorious LP when I was a tyke.  I grew up on this stuff.  When Beat It blares, or Billie Jean comes on, or maybe the 'Thriller' video is shown, I get chills.  Imagining what the man could have been in his later years had he given up the crack just boggles the mind.  To me, MJ passed after the Dangerous album, when he started acting like an idiot.

So you may call me a loser, a weirdo, or lame, but I don't care.  Michael was/is the man.  From Captain Eo to Moonwalker, from Smooth Criminal to Bad, the guy could sing, dance, and make some hella good songs.  You are lying if you don't feel like roller skating when you hear the opening riffs for 'Beat It'...you children of the 80s you.  Didn't get any better than MJ, Transformers, and after school cartoons.  Word.

Star-divide

*Disclaimer - this is a tongue-in-cheek thread.  All the above is true, however, with the current rash of negativity and bickering at RBR, please don't debate whether my love of MJ is valid.  And I really don't want to get into a debate on what the best Michael song is; we can vote, which is what is historically done, or we can have a playoff between the top 8 or so songs and see who wins.  It's only fair for the mid majors such as PYT or Jam.  Just sayin'.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Hi Jeremy. Welcome. My name is Brandon and I loved MJ even through the last 15 years. I am only 24, but my childhood was filled with his music.

Was he a weird guy? Yes. Was he a molester? No. RIP MJ.

Billie Jean wins as the best song.

Dunno

Preciate what he did for music and all… But after 1990 ish he was a frickin’ weirdo. Applaud him for all the things he did. Then ask yourself…. would you let him babysit your kid? I know. Not guilty. But still……

"Panic room". . . that always struck me as ODD?

Of course, I’ve seen the movie and get the gist but. . . . .when you really think about it: isn’t ANY ROOM in the whole dag-blarned house a PANIC ROOM? What is it? You can only panic in JUST one of ‘em? Hail no. You can pretty much shit-bricks in any room of any house when some evil monster comes a’lookin for you. (don’t know about the Bat-phone to the commissioner though, with it’s inch-eye-private-line hook up)

Also, when I went to NorCal for a wedding over the 4th, I stopped by to visit my property in SF. A new storefront opened up around the corner and get this: it is a “non-profit” center for TAKE YOUR PICK BUDDY! Because the name of the company is “Operation Concern”. That’s right. “Operation Concern”? Man, well- I’ll tell you what: THAT PLACE IS SURE GONNA HAVE IT’S HANDS FULL UNTIL THE SUN GROWS OLD! ‘Cause, there’s LOTS TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT. And the bad-guys? Well, they’ll stop doing their nefarious deeds when. . . . . .we’re all ice-skating in Hell. (never!)

the best lebowski quote that exists is : "8 year olds dude."

cause in the movie they’re talking about john turturro’s character who “just did 6 months in chino for exposing himself to an 8 year old.”

and that would have been pretty apropos to our conversation. what with MJ’s petterass room in all. also, me in some of the other folks have been using a lot of lebowski quotes lately in here. damn. i just feel so bad. it’s like i struck out looking with the tying and go ahead runs on base, and we just lost the game.

i had Moonwalker on VHS

and would watch it like once a week for a few years. i had Bad and Thriller and Off the Wall on cassette and would carry the Bad tape around with me, until it got broken. then i bought another one. i was a huge fan right up til the Dangerous album. i rember being stoked he did the halftime show of the superbowl in 93.

favorite songs: dont stop til you get enough, billy jean, black or white, man in the mirror, PYT.

that in 20 years grown adults will be saying the same thing about N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Yeah, they weren’t anywhere close to as big, but they’ve got a lot in common – same lame music; their original fans were 14 year olds (girls publicly; guys, well they didn’t come out of the closet until 25 years later)…the list could go on…

No, I don’t think so. I was a young teenager when those bands were popular and I can tell you that most of us know that those bands were a fad. It would be like the previous generation looking back at the New Kids on the Block as a timeless band. Just won’t happen. No one still pops in the N’Sync or BSBoys CD. There are no true artists that represent my generation. Just fads and over-produced music.

I’m not sure if there is an artist currently making music that I will still listen to in 5-10 years. Music isn’t what it used to be.

NOFX : was/is pretty damn prolific
Wu-tang Clan : left an indelible mark on music that is still very much being felt
Tupac/Makiavelli : at least as far as rap and hip hop go, this guy will never be forgotten.
DaftPunk : the dudes are total innovators. like em or not, you’ve danced to a dozen of their tracks (even if you didn’t know it) and the shit they created has also changed music. (say hello to RATATAT and MGMT because of DaftPunk)

Dear Mama still chokes me up….lol. He would throw out something all sensitive and that would be followed up by something hard…like Hit ’Em Up. All of it good. Also, I think it was NLS who jokingly alluded to Alien Ant Farm as the first to do Smooth Criminal. Well, do you know how many people actually thought Jay Z and Beyonce were the first to do “Me and My Girlfriend”? 2Pac got no credit even though he wrote/recorded that song 10 years prior….his girlfriend was a metaphor for his gun. Ha! It was creative.

by akbrown15 on Jul 13, 2009 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was just about to say

Me and my girlfriend was about his gun. I mean, the dude was amazingly talented. Amazingly. If people pay attention to his lyrics, and listen to the beats and tunes he adds to them…no one has ever done that. Even now, you get teh Tupac albums released where he laid down rhymes before he died…the producers put shit beats with them, and you get shit tracks. Although Ghetto Ghospel with Elton John is an AMAZING track.

Tupac sits alone in hip hop. Love the others, but the guy was epic. Back me up, Josh.

I kid you not

I grew up in a small town, and well- because my sisters were too young to take care of me (I was kind of a handful)- I got babysat by a family not too far from where I lived. On that block, there were a few black families. And the family that took care of me, had a sister named Tootie! No joke- it was her nickname, but that’s all they ever called her. (real name: Tanya Hayes). Okay, that’s half of it. Down the street from the Hayes’ lived the Kendricks. They had a nephew who lived with them, his name was Dooky. No joke. (real name: Brian Kendricks).

So, Tootie and Dooky would always be around when we played “kick the cans” or “hide and go seek”. Saying, “1-2-3 on Tootie!” was fricking funny as all get out. Or, “I called you out, Dookie! You are out!” (that was some fun times. . . . . . .)

i gotta say

i think MJ was talented, but the songs on History suck. one could even go so far as to say that MJ was a “system QB” referring to Quincy Jones as the system. though if that were true, one still must account for the good tunes from the Jackson 5 era, and for the Bad and Dangerous albums… his two best albums though (Thriller and Off the Wall), were heavily influenced and shaped by Sir Quincy MF’in Jones. (i think Stevie Wonder was involved in some of the production in the late 70’s to mid 80’s as well…. could be wrong on that one though…)

Insulting intelligence?

That’s going a bit far…do I detect a bit of insecurity in your fandom?

I was just making a Chizik-Kiffin type comparison, and there are a LOT of similarities. I’m not saying there aren’t some major differences – MJ was Kiffin’s NFL to the Backstreet Boys’ Iowa State. (Sorry bammer, couldn’t help the comparison!) His music isn’t important enough to me to get worked up about though, so I’ll bow out of this one!

So you may call me a loser, a weirdo, or lame, but I don’t care.

Well. . . .

. . . N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, even Boyz2Men, New Kids on the Block et al were, in a nutshell: formulaic!

The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson (with his dancers) were, in a nutshell: NOT!

You can’t go back to the Temptations, The Supremes, Four Tops, or The Spinners- they were soul without the crossover (and I don’t mean, dribble). They were also almost Do-Wop.

The Jackson 5 and the Osmonds were Pop and multi-platinum. Nothing like that before or after.

The rest, as you mentioned were crap. And even some of the ones I mentioned.

Those kiddy-pop acts were just that: acts. Michael Jackson (and before him- the Jackson 5) were almost movements in pop music as we know it. You CANNOT deny his imprint on music. All genres of music. If you try, it just shows bias and an unintelligent/belligerent appreciation for music.

didn’t matter the style, ballad or uptempo pop single, he was damn good.

the guy could sing and either had insane luck, or talent at selecting producers to work with. no one is going to blame bellicheck and saban for surrounding themselves with the best of the best. bottom line, he knew what the hell he was doing.

One often overlooked song by the Jackson 5 is. . .

. . .Enjoy Yourself.

THAT was a badass song. (however, “Ben” was a goofy as all get out song)

Here's something funny!

I have just listened to “The Girl is Mine” like 5 times. You’re right, it is and always has been a damn good song. Those two m-fers can duet, can’t they?

So, while I was listening to your “overlooked” song, you were prolly listening to my “overlooked” song. (pinch-poke!)

Too freaking hilarious!

I’ve been down with Daft since the 90’s. I saw them play out here in LA scads of times. They put down the shiz-bot! Brian Wilson is Kevin Love’s (fUcla basketball stud from Oregon, now playing for the T-Wolves) uncle. He was spotted at few fUcla games. Word has it, that he’s BANANAS! Cheese for brains these days. Too bad too. He’s a genius.

True Story!

About 5 or 6 years ago when my son was 8 or 9 we were watching a Michael Jackson special that showed him during the Off the Wall/Thriller time period. I said something like, “Michael Jackson was so good then”. My son looked at the TV, then me, then the TV, then back to me and said “Michael Jackson use to be black?!”

LOL...

no telling how many times I’ve thought that, or said that aloud!! Why would he be ashamed of his color? I know plenty of people that have not understood that fact of MJ’s life, and probably never will. I just know I enjoyed ALOT of his music, and that’s all that mattered to me. Hilarious post though!!

I’m glad TexasTideGirl showed herself here in this thread. I’m not so sure if I’ve read her words in a long long long time. She used to be part of the RBR Random 10 too! (where’s your music girl?)

Speaking of which? Where is our little black cloud in a dress? (wink: bamavicki >.<)

Yeah, it’s true TexasTideGirl, I miss you like something else. Didn’t you used to put in some soundtrack tunes? I used to google the crap outta your Random 10, just to listen to some of the songs. (I do that with a lot of peoples. That’s the funnest part of Random 10. Nico’s are just outta this world. And tristarcorp(sp?) she also had some great tunes.)

You’re right BRO7, RBR just ain’t the same without the “woman’s touch” to it.

haha...

ok, but yea MJ was the man…a true master…
and the sad thing is that as long as the internet is around, no one will ever have the impact and (especially) selling power that Mike had as a musician. his music will live forever and I hope that we can move past his (alleged) pedo issues and just remember the black man that he was…dude had a skin disease…he was weird but c’mon people…

enjoy...

This HOOOOTTTTTTTTTTT Chick that worked for me in Huntsville had the same thing

she wore special make up to cover it up. But you could still tell.

Still, the girl was gorgeous and sweet to boot. If she wasnt my employee at the time…

Guys still hit on her, although she ended up with losers because her confidence was f’d up, even though it shouldn’t have been.
