Garnet and Black Attack Previews South Carolina at Alabama
I'd love to hear the RBR community's thoughts on this game, not that I like our chances, as you'll see. It's been a while since we've played you guys, so I'm not 100% knowledgeable about your depth chart, so if I missed anything, let me know. Looking forward to the game this fall.

Nice work...
…and I’m not just saying that because you’re favoring Bama in most categories. I would say this is a fair assessment, especially since you take care to note the uncertainties for both teams. I don’t take SEC foes for granted, and I won’t predict the score, but I’m guessing almost all of us are expecting a W for Bama. Thanks for posting.

I am really worried about this game -- actually more than any game on the schedule.
SC could be a strong team this year and they will have an experienced QB who might be poised for a breakout year. More importantly, I do not like how this game falls in the schedule — right between Ole Miss and UT. There is just no way the Tide will be up for SC after all the attention the Ole Miss game is going to get and we play flat at home more often than on the road anyway. This has the makings of a classic trap game against a team that will be looking for a big win and is capable of pulling it off.
I like the way you think...
Although I’m not so sure I share your optimism for how our guys will do in this game, trap or not. You’re right that this will be a great chance for us to get some respect with a huge upset, so we’ll hopefully be fired up. But when I look at the talent these two teams have at each position, ‘Bama just looks so much better. And it’s not that I don’t think we’ll be good. We’ve recruited very well by our standards for the past few years and could finally be on the verge of the breakout season that’s always right around the corner for Gamecocks fans. But when I look at ‘Bama, especially that front seven, I see a team that could very well be back in a BCS bowl. It’ll take one of our best efforts and a relatively poor game by you guys for us to have a chance to win.

Trap Game
Totally agree on the trap game. The Ole Miss vs. Alabama game is going to get a ton of hype from Ole Miss fans, as they clearly see that as the game of the season. If we win the Ole Miss game the South Carolina game could definitely be a let down game.
Also, I really like South Carolina’s chances in the Ole Miss game earlier in the year. I think South Carolina is one the teams that could have a lot to say in who wins the SEC west division. Of course, by the same token they could get absolutely destroyed by that schedule; where they could conceivably go 1-5 or 2-4 over the last 6 games. That back half is brutal for South Carolina.
I like our chances in the Ole Miss game, too...
We’ve had a lot of success in these Thursday night games when they’ve been in Columbia over the years. Plus, while I like some of the skill position players Ole Miss has, I think their offensive line is questionable. Our pass rush should be able to do some damage there. And their defense isn’t really top-10 caliber other than on the line.

We always have a brutal second half
I’ve always been conflicted that one of our only scheduling traditions in the SEC has been the “Orange Crush,” in which we play Tennessee, Florida and Clemson in three of the last four games of the year. Add in the Arkansas game, which has grown closer and closer to being an actual rivalry over the last 5-10 years, and there’s always the possibility of a rough closing month.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
I thought the position by position break-downs were overly optimistic but the final score prediction seemed to be what I would expect.
That is to say, if the best we have (excluding special teams) is a “slight” advantage, there’s no way we’re going to win by two touchdowns. It almost sounds like you’re expecting some of our question marks to turn “slight” advantages into “strong” advantages before the game rolls around, which isn’t unreasonable considering that’s exactly what Julio would’ve done last year. Question mark pre-season, huge asset a few games in.
Also: I don’t think the special teams advantage is quite as big. Arenas has had more fumbles than touchdowns in his career. Add in the other stupid plays he’s made in the return game and I’m still not convinced he really does more good than harm, but I know that’s a really unpopular opinion to have since everyone seems to love him so much, regular screw-ups notwithstanding.
that punt he caught and went out of bounds
in the SECCG really stung.

Escpecially
considering the kick would have went out of bounds causing a penalty for UF and us getting the ball in a good spot. So a potential positive, turned positively negative for us in that one play. That’s how football goes though.

yeah, and he has quickly turned
things around for us in a positive direction on many occasions as well. but i had pretty mixed feelings the night of the 08 SECCG.

I didn't see many positions as strong advantages for 'Bama...
At most positions, say defensive line, what I saw was similar talent and levels of depth, but the absence on our team of a difference maker like a Terrence Cody. I’d call that a slight advantage. Our defensive line is very good relative to most teams in the conference not named Alabama or Florida, as are our receivers, linebackers, etc.
The reason I give you guys the two TD victory is I saw slight advantages literally across the board for you guys, with a couple of strong advantages. This is compared to, say, Georgia, a team that I think we stack up well against at a few positions but should ultimately lose to due to having deficits in more matchups than not. Even if some of them are close, I just don’t see where we have a matchup that should favor us, which in my mind means that we’re going to have a tough time keeping it close.

Wrong
He has way more big plays than screw-ups. He was about the only player that came to play in Sugar Bowl. I think the criticism of Arenas as a returner is about one of the stupidest things people say. He has literally won games by himself (think Tulane). Not only that he may be the most improved cornerback in the country.
Just
his gut feeling which 60% of the time is right every time.

I’d rather have a guy that gives us 15 yards every return than a guy who has an equal chance score a TD or hand the ball away to the other team.
I cringe every time the ball is kicked to him. Every time.
As rare as...
…it is for a returner to score a TD, and as stout as our D is, I’d rather have a guy who has an equal chance score a TD as hand the ball away to the other team.
by NiceLittleSaturday on Jul 13, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t care how “stout” the D is, fumble the ball on a kick or punt return and the opponent is almost always automatically in field goal range. I really wish the stat reporting services tracked fumble/turn-over stats for return guys.
People like Arenas because he’s flashy and has had a few fortuitously-timed returns but he’s made a ton of huge mistakes (many, if not most, of which have been mental) that I just hate seeing the football kicked to him.
Maybe he’ll be like JPW and really blossom in his last season, but so far my take is that he’s a huge liability.
Still...
…if we’re trading a few field goals for a few TDs, I’m in.
I hear what you’re saying about him, although ‘a ton of huge mistakes’ is certainly an exaggeration. He’s made mental errors, and he played a role in costing us the UF game last year. On the other hand, he has ignited the team in several games over the past two years, and he generally makes up for his mistakes by making equally big positive plays. I don’t have the stats, but I remember him fumbling vs. UT and LSU, and stepping out of bounds vs. UF. I also remember him going to the house vs. MSU, Utah, and Tulane, plus Oklahoma State and LSU in 2007.
I can’t predict the future any better than you, but don’t cringe when you see him catch the ball this year. Just watch. For the most part, I’m betting you won’t regret it.

i'm lookinf forwad to seeing what
his senior year turns out like. i think it’s highly probable that he’ll be the most comfortable he’s ever been as a return man, and perhaps not feel the need to try and make an explosion happen every time he gets the ball. i’d love to see a reduction int he mental errors and a Senior Year is the best time for that. i’d think.

I brought this point up in another thread and was literally laughed out of the building, and then shot in the face.

SC
game could be hard as it comes at a tough place on our schedule. Bama will be better passing the ball than Garnett & Black thinks. McElroy to Jones will be better than anything SC can come up with. I really don’t think they have that much at QB.
Still SC will play tough. I hope it is night game so the crowd can get into it. I look for the visor to be flying early and often. Bama by 17.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Or God for that matter.

The receivers are really impressive...
As far as McElroy vs. Garcia goes, we’ll see. And I mean that with no irony. Both are question marks at this point. I know McElroy played well in the spring, but the same could be said for Garcia.

McElroy is going to
surprise this year. But by SC everyone will know who he is.
Listen, we don’t give out #12 to just any dumb kid who shows up.

Found this post interesting
along those lines:

I do agree, though, that McElroy will surprise. He won’t be a Stafford or anything, but he’s smart and patient and will keep us out of negative plays, and with a few decent hookups to Julio and Maze, and with our running game, we should be set to do pretty well this season with him at QB.

I fell good about this game because our defense matches up perfectly against their offense...
Our defense struggles against offenses that are fast, spread the field, and have a strong quarterback who can makes good reads and can play at the speed of the game. Over the past four years, South Carolina has had none of those things, and they should not find any relief against our run defense, which is the biggest strength of the team. And if our pass rush improves, I just don’t see mistake prone Stephen Garcia having a chance of beating us unless there is a strong emotional hangover after the Ole Miss game.
South Carolina’s defense is good, but I think they will crack first because of turnovers and lack of production on offense.
If Ellis Johnson
is still calling the defense for Carolina, he’s capable of coming up with a deadly gameplan. Maybe Julio and Peek will be a difference, considering that when he shut us down at Mississippi State we didn’t have big time receiving threats.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sell out to stop the run and make McElroy win the game.

that game still came down to
a poor decision to call a play action bootleg to our weekside, followed by an even worse decision to half assedly flip the ball to the rough vicinity of the TE. result pick 6, and last TD scored that game by either team.

I thought...
…MSU scored another TD in the 2nd half that was set up by another pick by Pegues.
Either way, we definitely spent a lot of time watching film from the AU and UK losses to them that year…then followed the same recipe for FAIL.
