My guess is that many of you have followed this, and perhaps even voted, but for several weeks the Tuscaloos News has held a contest to see whom fans deem the greatest players Alabama has fielded in its storied tenure. At TideSports.com, you can find this article comparing the results with the members of the All-Century Team, as well as some commentary about those results. A few things stand out to me:
RB - I wish I had seen Johnny Musso play, because I just can't choose him over Bobby Humphrey.
FB - I'm glad that Walsh mentions Pooley Hubert, a true legend, but there is no way I choose him over Johnny Davis. Unless we're talking QB.
WR - No dispute...this year.
TE - I would almost bet good money that Howard Cross will be bumped from this list in the next five years.
Also, I totally agree with Walsh's take on the defensive positions...except (perhaps) for safety. But Harry Gilmer does belong on the list, which is why I would choose him and Palmer for kickoff and punt return duties.
