Auburn WR Tim Hawthorne Breaks Foot
As per several reports, Auburn wide receiver Tim Hawthorne broke his foot this morning in non-contact workouts, and he's going to miss several weeks at the least. Most of them think he's going to miss all of Fall practice, and he might not be back in time for the season opener against Louisiana Tech. He'll be back at some part early in the season, but given the lingering nature of foot injuries (ask Greg Hardy), it's probably going to be a long time after that before he is 100%.
Anyway, the reason I point this out is because Hawthorne presents the epitome of a perfect example as to why hot-shot recruits shouldn't run their mouths. I don't know if you guys remember his recruitment back late 2005 / early 2006, but he was highly recruited, and he was a drama queen to the very end. He promised more excitement than Fred Rouse's recruitment, talked of a big surprise to the very end, gave umpteen official visits a ten, had his Dad talking him up 24/7, gave out conflicting stories to different recruiting sites, constantly re-shuffled his "favorites," said he would make a big impact as a true freshman, had a huge announcement, even had ESPN covering the thing... only to sign with Auburn, which is exactly what everyone expected him to do all along. At the end of the day, he probably had the most diva-esque recruitment of any prospect from the state of Alabama this decade.
And how has it ended up? Despite the high talk, he had to settle for a redshirt his true freshman year, and the following Spring he was injured in a major auto accident in which one of his friends died. That Fall he had four catches, almost all of which came in garbage time against the East Popcorn States of the world. The Spring after that he breaks his arm, and made no impact last year. Now, going into his fourth year, after it looks like he might be about to emerge, he's got a broken foot that will likely limit him a good deal as a redshirt junior. He'll probably emerge next year as a fifth-year senior without having really done anything, and literally with more broken bones in his career than big catches.
The moral of the story is simple... don't run your damn mouth as a recruit, I don't care how highly-touted you are. Survey the landscape, pick the school that's right for you, and leave it at that. I obviously don't have any firm data to back this up, but it seems to me like the kids are the biggest divas on the recruiting trails are the most likely of all to get a big, bitter taste of the harshness of reality once they arrive on campus. Hawthorne would certainly be a good case study in support of that argument.

Don't forget
he was also one of the a-holes in that picture after the 2007 Iron Bowl, by the “6” sign in the stands.

Which is really funny if you think about it...
… considering that Hawthorne didn’t catch a pass, didn’t throw a pass, didn’t record a rushing attempt, didn’t return a kick, didn’t return a punt, didn’t record a tackle, didn’t break up a pass, didn’t force a fumble, didn’t recover a fumble…
In other words, he got in the game for all of about two plays and never made any impact whatsoever. He helped Auburn to victory that night about as much as I did. And yet he’s the one leading the crowd and jumping in front of the cameras… it’s like the lame 12th man white guy on the NBA team that won the Finals who walks around the title parade like he owns the city, completely forgetting the fact that he hasn’t stepped out of his warm-up gear since the first round of the playoffs.

I...
…feel sorry for this kid…of course, I have ever since he committed to Auburn.

I attend the same high school that he went to.
And I can say from personal experience that the guy is an asshole. He was an incredible reciever, arguably the best in Homewood history and that’s saying something, but he was a cocky, arrogant guy. For what it’s worth, David Ross was the same way.

And to a large degree...
… you can argue that Ross had a harsh taste of reality as well. He wasn’t as highly-touted as Hawthorne, nor did he create as big of a recruiting fuss, but he was nevertheless a pretty highly-touted guy. By that I mean he was a solid four-star prospect and he could have gone to just about any SEC school.
And again, look how it has turned out for him. He finally played a couple of games after others went out with injury in his third year, and there’s no guarantee he can even start in his fourth year.

To tell you the truth...
..I’d never even heard of the guy so I went to look up his profile on Rivals. Not only was he the best WR ever to attend Homewood….there is a good chance he was the ugliest receiver ever to attend Homewood High. I am with NLS, I feel sorry for this kid.

Patriot Power and such
I remember my senior year at Homewood, all the younger football players walked around acting like they were the greatest thing since sliced bread and penicillin, but the seniors were all very laid back and cool and if you asked them they were quick to tell you that they couldn’t stand any of the younger players. I see the youth movement continued after we left.

soooo basically...
the older players thanked you for the water you provided them at practice, while the younsters tended to throw their cups down and not recognize your hard work?

I guess...
…I set myself up for that one. Thankfully I was in no way connected to the football team beyond “spectator”

Ah, a fellow patriot!
That’s a very cool coincidence. When did you graduate? And yes, a lot of the football players think that they are awesome. I’d say it’s about 50/50 now amongst people who actually get meaningful playing time. I have a lot of very good friends on the team, so I might be a little biased.

1996...
….way before your time apparently.

But '96...
…was also the start of Coach Newton’s late 90’s reign of terror over 5A.

Dude that's really cool
I’m a senior this year so I will be heading down to the Capstone next fall. So your senior year Homewood won the state championship in 1995 correct? You know Coach Newton just retired from AD, which is sad. He was always around the school, even though he stoped coaching. That’s really wierd that you were at Homewod when he started coaching and I was at Homewood when he ended his career.

Coach Newton...
….was a great guy. I learned more about the game of football from him in three week’s of asking him ridiculous questions during driver’s ed than I ever probably had a right to know. Sad to hear he’s stepped down as AD. And yes, my senior year we won the 5A state title. I’ll never forget driving over to Oxford and winning in OT on a blocked kick to stay alive in the playoffs that year. Outside of several Alabama memories, that is probably my favorite football related moment of my life.

Here's hoping
We return to the playoffs this year. We have been struggling as of late. Back to back 4-6 seasons. If not we will be awesome at basketball again this year and will probably make another run at the state title.

Was Hawthorne a bigger diva than....
Bryce Brown? I’m really interested to see what Brown will do at UT.

No, but...
… Bryce Brown is easily the biggest diva in the history of college football recruiting. Even Terrell Pryor or Willie Williams didn’t have anything on him.

The
TP thing annoyed the crap out of me. He just wanted to keep getting the attention. He ended up going exactly where everyone thought he would anyway.

A lot
of these guys are a-holes, unfortunately. I don’t want to be one of those people who says it’s not their fault (because I think we’re all responsible for our behavior), but they have been given priority status since middle school, maybe even earlier, and it only worsens when they’re recruited to play college football.
Life and football have a way of humbling a young man.
I’m here to say that Hawthorne is a fake, a frickin’ goldbricker. I’ve seen a lot of broken legs and this guy walks.

That movie came out in 1998
I have probably seen it around 100 times. Maybe more. I think I could hold my own in a trivia contest with anybody. I have never actually gone to a Lebowski Fest, though.

When his eligibility is up
Tim Hawthorne will be able to look back on a lifetime of acheivement, on challenges met, competitors bested, obstacles overcome.
He didn’t blame anyone for the loss of his foot. Some walkon took it from him during off-season workouts.
