Redshirt sophomore tailback Darren Evans of the Virginia Tech football team will miss the 2009 season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee Tuesday in practice.
According to Virginia Tech's official site, starting tailback Darren Evans will miss the 2009 season due to a torn ACL. The injury had recently been diagnosed as merely a sprain, but obviously the MRI revealed something more serious.
It goes without saying that this is a big loss for the Hokies, and it really helps out the Tide with the upcoming match-up in Atlanta. Evans ran for over 1,200 yards last year, had 11 touchdowns, and was the Orange Bowl MVP to boot. Without doubt, he was clearly their most accomplished skill position player returning in 2009. I must say, I felt really confident about our ability to shut down their running game as it was, and without having Evans at their disposal, it's hard to see the Hokies really getting much going on the group against our front seven.

I agree...
…but that stinks. I never like to see any player get injured, and I always want to beat them when they’re at full strength. Best wishes to Evans on a strong recovery.

gotta
agree with you on that one. You never want to hear about someone going down with a serious injury. At least he’s a sophomore and will get three full years to make some noise.

Wow
That is quite a blow to their offense. Who is the #2 to fill his (large)shoes?
Got a dip in my stride, cuz you fear the tide.

From Gobbler Country
Josh Oglesby, also a sophomore, is currently listed as the Hokies’ No. 2 running back on the depth chart. Freshmen Ryan Williams and David Wilson are also expected to compete for playing time.

I was just about to post that...
… they all seem pretty unproven. I read in one place the three had something like 38 career carries between them.

well the
back up seems confident..
This post also includes a lot of quotes from the forgotten man in Tech’s backfield, Josh Oglesby. He said he plans on having an impact on the Hokies’ offense this season.
“My mindset: We’re not having a season like last year. I’m not watching. I’m going to get some playing time one way or the other. I’m going to get some. And it’s going to be at running back. I’m going to score some touchdowns. I’m going to get some yards. I’m going to contribute to the team. I know that for sure. I’m positive about that.”

I'm not sure that says much...
Coming out of high school, Scout.com had him as a three-star recruit and the #79 tailback in the country. Rivals also gave him a middling evaluation. His offer list consisted almost solely of the bottom end of the ACC. From a couple of the articles I read, it sounded like he really wanted to go to UNC, but they never really offered him. Anyway, he didn’t play in his first year in Blacksburg, and last year he had 38 carries for a whopping 88 yards (2.3 ypc).
I’m not knocking the kid for being confident, mind you — honestly you have to be that in order to have a chance — but just looking at the raw information on this young man, he doesn’t sound like someone you would be overly worried about.

This is horrible
Having a great deal of respect for Virginia Tech, this is an absolute shame. I hope we beat them, but I never want to see any player suffer a serious injury and as NLS and Bammer wrote, it’s best to play a great team when they’re at full strength.
Wasn’t Ryan Williams, their backup, one of the best running back recruits in the nation two years ago?
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Williams...
Scout had him as the #8 tailback in the country, and Rivals had him as the #3. I’m not sure why he didn’t play last year.

Were they really going to rely on their running game in the first place? I think not. With no legit threat at tailback, Tyrod will have to beat Bama with his arm and legs.
Ro or Hightower can spy him, Anders can rush him and, hopefully, the secondary will lock up coverage = shutout?
Oh yes...
… I don’t have a doubt that they were really going to rely on the run game. The Hokies run it a lot, and like to use the I-formation a good bit. If it’s up to Taylor to beat us, then the only way we’ll lose is if we beat offenses with turnovers on offense and special teams.

I am more worried about
special teams play than their offense. As good as the kid is I don’t think he would have had a big day against Bama. We were beat last year by QB’s and the spread. I can’t remember any backs including Moreno and Spiller doing much against us from the line of scrimage.
The reason I’m worried about special teams is VT always seem to block a lot of kicks and to me PJ is a slow punter. If their D is tough it could be a low scoring game and then the kicking game could decide it and that scares me.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
I wonder...
how Hokie Boyz will take this news.

So did he or didn't he play last year?
Or did he give up his redshirt mid-season to replace an injured starter?
I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey.
I hate to hear that...
Now when they can’t run on us and lose, that will be their excuse! Oh well… A win is a win either way!
I remember last year's Kickoff Classic
and the rave about the dynamic duo of Clemson, until the game started. Just as that game, contain the play makers (Taylor) and it should be a good game to get the nerves in check and win. Looking at VT’s stats last year, Taylor was usually first or second in rushing yards with Evans, but we can’t forget about any unforeseen up-in-comers…
Not on CBS again !!
not to stir
up the past…but did you guys feel that way after beating us…or were just happy to win?
